Determined to acquire the Jinwu Holy Blood Pill, Lu Fei Fan knew he needed to raise a staggering one billion in funds to afford such a miraculous medicine.
Turning to reassure his mother, Lu Fei Fan instructed his younger brother to take good care of her while he figured out how to secure the money. He also decided to cover the medical expenses with the funds gathered by A Teng and Niu Dali.
“Brother, why don’t I help think of ways to get the money?” his younger brother, whose skin was darkened by the sun, suggested, clearly eager to share the burden.
Lu Fei Fan nodded and patted his brother's shoulder. “I’ll handle the finances. You focus on taking care of Mom and Dad at the hospital. I’ll come back tonight to keep watch.”
With that, he left the hospital room with Niu Dali and A Teng, only to run into Uncle A Teng returning from the doctor’s office.
He led them up to the hospital rooftop and pulled out a pack of cigarettes, handing one to each of them. Although Lu Fei Fan had only smoked once in his previous life, he felt restless and decided to light one up—not just because of his father’s hospitalization but also because he was thinking about that bastard father from his past life who had carelessly thrown him into a military camp.
After taking a few puffs, Uncle A Teng sighed and said, “Don’t worry. Since you’re A Teng’s classmate, I’ve spoken with the head of this department—he’s my friend. He should take good care of your dad. However, for him to wake up and recover, he will need the Jinwu Holy Blood Pill.”
He paused for a moment before continuing.
“This medicine is crafted from the near-extinct blood of the Special Bloodthirsty Golden Crow Eagle and nearly a hundred rare herbs. Do you know what a Special Class beast is? Probably not. The difficulty in hunting these Bloodthirsty Golden Crow Eagles is beyond imagination. When I was younger, two juvenile Bloodthirsty Golden Crow Eagles attacked an island city with a population of a hundred thousand, causing numerous casualties. To eliminate them, the Federal Government dispatched a trained special operations brigade, resulting in hundreds of casualties. Eventually, they had to send in a special team composed of Fusers. It took tremendous effort and cost to finally bring down those two beasts. Out of seven Fusers on that team, three died. I won’t go into detail about how brutal that battle was; facing monsters like those is something ordinary people like us can hardly comprehend.”
After finishing his cigarette and extinguishing it on the rooftop ground, Uncle A Teng gazed out at the vast ocean surrounding the island—a realm filled with countless unknown dangers as well as untold riches.
Yet not every heroic tale ends in a fairytale-like conclusion; often reality is far more cruel and terrifying.
“Our world is vast and immense—the endless sea teems with monsters. We insignificant humans can only hide on islands and scrape by. But because of the past Cataclysm, we humans have become unique; we’ve made significant advancements in military and medical technology. When we have the ability to protect our families, life can still be quite beautiful.”
Lu Fei Fan nodded in understanding, with A Teng and Niu Dali following suit.
“I’m telling you this to help you see things more clearly. If your dad can’t make it, don’t force yourself. After all, that ‘Jinwu Holy Blood Pill’ is worth over a billion; not everyone can afford it,” Uncle A Teng consoled.
“No,” Lu Fei Fan said firmly, looking straight at him. “I will get that medicine.”
Uncle A Teng shook his head. “I’ve seen that look many times before. At first, many people believe they can change their fate, but very few actually succeed. While I know anything is possible, a billion is a height that many people can’t reach in ten lifetimes.”
“Thank you for your concern, but I will find a way to gather the billion to buy that medicine. Even if it costs me my life, I’m willing to do whatever it takes. I must bring my dad back to consciousness and health,” Lu Fei Fan vowed through gritted teeth, clenching his fists.
“Alright, I knew you would say that,” Uncle A Teng sighed. “Since we’ve talked so much today, let me tell you the paths you can take moving forward.”
He raised three fingers and looked at Lu Fei Fan.
“Right now, you have three paths to choose from. One is to keep your dad on this treatment until he passes away peacefully, but that will cost several million. He won’t recover. The second option is to enlist in the military and gain military merit through the Southern Expeditions and Northern Campaigns. With enough merit, you could exchange it for the ‘Jinwu Holy Blood Pill.’ I’ve heard the internal prices in the military are a bit more favorable, though I don’t know how much exactly. But accumulating that military merit… it could take ten years or more, and whether you’ll even survive long enough to gather enough merit is uncertain…”
Lu Fei Fan fell silent.
“What’s the last option?” Uncle A Teng’s anxious voice interrupted.
“The last option is to pass an assessment and become an outstanding qualified Fuser. You would then join the Special Operations Team to hunt monsters. The materials from monsters can be sold for money. Participating in Special Operations Team missions against sea monsters could earn you hundreds of thousands or even millions at a time. If you’re strong enough, making tens of millions in one go isn’t out of the question. As long as you accumulate enough money, you can exchange it for the ‘Jinwu Shengxue Wan.’ Moreover, if you’re fortunate enough to encounter a powerful ally and manage to kill a monster of Special Class or higher, you could exchange its corresponding Monster Materials for equally valuable medicines. This is an ironclad rule in the free market.
This path is the quickest shortcut; with good luck, it could take just a year or so, which wouldn’t delay your dad’s condition too long. Depending on your cultivation level, you might even apply for a personal credit loan from the bank. If they see potential in you, they’ll grant you a loan. However, if luck isn’t on your side… well, hunting monsters could cost you your life; the risks are far greater than enlisting in the military.
But this is also the fastest shortcut. However… to become a Fuser, you must pass the Fuser qualification exam before being allowed to join the Special Operations Team or any Mercenary group for monster hunting. Otherwise, no one will take an ordinary person out to hunt monsters.”
You must pass the assessment and obtain Fuser qualifications to be allowed to follow the Special Operations Team or Mercenaries into monster hunting. Only then will a Special Operations Team be willing to take you along; relying solely on yourself makes it nearly impossible to kill enough monsters for their materials to sell for the ‘Jinwu Shengxue Wan.’
Lu Fei Fan clenched his fists, standing there resolutely.
There was no turning back now; this was the only way to save his father.
Watching Lu Fei Fan sink into contemplation, A Teng's uncle nodded. Some things couldn't be achieved through mere impulsiveness; they required careful consideration and prudent choices.
"Think it over carefully. I can only help you this far." With that, he turned and left the building.
"Uncle..." A Teng followed him, continuing to inquire in detail about the topic they had just discussed.
Niu Dali stayed behind to accompany Lu Fei Fan. Lu Fei Fan returned to the hospital room, where he not only took care of his father but also sent his exhausted younger brother home with their mother to rest. Eventually, Niu Dali could no longer withstand the fatigue and was urged by Lu Fei Fan to go back and sleep.
At night, apart from the rhythmic beeping of the machines monitoring the patient, the room was quiet enough for Lu Fei Fan to pause and reflect. He recalled a saying from his grandfather in his previous life: no matter what happens, one must face it like a man.
That night, Lu Fei Fan made a decision. He would once again consider the Unified Awakeners Examination. If he failed the exam, he would join the Mercenaries; he had heard that Mercenaries earned more than government troops. Accumulating military merit through warfare took too long, and that path was not suitable for him; perhaps joining the Mercenaries would be quicker.
The next day, when A Teng and Niu Dali arrived at the hospital, they brought unexpected news.
