The swirling dark clouds spread like thick ink, recklessly painting the sky black. Groups of ominous shapes loomed in the oppressive atmosphere, resembling fierce monsters, while a terrifying darkness, like a greedy devil, seemed intent on swallowing the entire world.
Even more alarming, amidst the chaotic and blurred gaps in the clouds, lightning flashed suddenly, its terrifying power manifesting in bizarre, tree-like forms that stretched out in all directions, as if tearing the sky apart. Following this was the deep, rumbling sound of thunder, echoing with fury.
The rain could no longer hold back and fell like a string of broken pearls, pouring down in torrents and quickly enveloping everything in a shroud of gray.
The raging waves of the sea responded to the thunder and lightning above, surging to heights of several meters as if they could connect with the oppressive curtain looming overhead.
However, amidst this tumultuous ocean, two black flying ships sped through the storm. The sudden brightness of lightning illuminated their batfish-like shapes, sharply defined and adorned with unique identification markings. Their powerful engines roared as they navigated through the harsh conditions with stability, leaving behind two trails of air on the surface as they raced toward a distant, indistinct island.
In stark contrast to the chaotic atmosphere over the sea, this island was surprisingly quiet; aside from the sound of rain, there was no other noise.
Peering through the misty veil of heavy rain, several tall metal structures stood in the distance. Further away, buildings appeared dilapidated and haphazardly collapsed, some even billowing thick smoke from within.
The scene was one of devastation and scars; it seemed that the city on this island had suffered some great catastrophe.
Near the ruins of the urban streets, debris littered the disordered pathways. Suddenly, a large rat cautiously surveyed its surroundings. After confirming there was no danger, it tentatively emerged to look around before hastening its pace through the rubble. Following the scent of decaying food, it navigated around several large stones and came upon a half-eaten red apple. Excitedly, it rushed forward; food was within reach.
As it accelerated toward its prize, a massive abandoned wooden crate toppled over and completely covered it. The rat panicked and scurried about until it managed to calm down slightly and peek through a gap in the wood. To its astonishment, it saw that a tender human hand had picked up the apple it had been eyeing!
The hand belonged to a baby no more than a year old. Dressed in thin, filthy clothing, he looked terribly hungry. Clutching the apple tightly with his clumsy hands, he tried desperately to wipe it clean before attempting to shove it into his mouth. However, without any teeth to bite into it, he could do nothing but sit there with a pitiful expression that suggested he wanted to cry. He continued to struggle to bring the apple closer to his mouth in hopes of filling his empty stomach. In that desolate ruin, he sat alone with only his small hands grasping that rotten apple.
Suddenly behind him, a spotted python raised its head and flicked its tongue out as it coldly observed this human infant struggling with his apple. It saw an easy meal before it and wasted no time; without hesitation, it lunged forward with its mouth wide open to bite down on the unsuspecting child!
Buzz—
Swish—
Amidst the curtain of rain, a flash of light streaked across.
The giant python, with its mouth wide open, suddenly realized that its head was tilting uncontrollably. With a thud, it fell to the ground, and only then did its eyes notice a pair of large Leather Boots splashing through the muddy water, coming closer with a heavy stomp.
The fierce Snake Head was crushed into a puddle of blood. Raindrops fell onto the murky water, reflecting the figure of the owner of those Leather Boots—a Disheveled Man, seemingly in his thirties. He wore an impressive Black Military Uniform, and his messy hair along with unkempt stubble exuded a sense of calmness. Casually, he walked over to the infant.
The baby finally lifted its head to look at him. With blood smeared all over from gnawing on an apple, the innocent child held a tattered apple in hand and broke into a grin at the Burly Man, instantly moving him.
The man gazed down at him and smiled back. He then crouched down to pat the Fellow's head before taking off his Raincoat and wrapping it around the child. He lifted him into his arms.
At that moment, a figure descended from a building above the ruins and landed beside the man holding the baby. He sheathed a Silver Flying Dagger back into his waist pouch and slowly stood up, revealing half of his face covered by a Mask. A Braided strand of hair flicked away the rainwater as it curled around his neck. He wore only a jacket that showcased his sculpted upper body, and behind him was a military backpack.
“Captain, how many times has it been? We need to be first as a team. Why do you and Azure Wolf always break discipline? Hmph.”
A voice rang out, followed by a group of people slowly emerging from the rain. Leading them was a Black-Haired Mature Woman, exuding an air of competence reminiscent of Lady Yu. A belt filled with Hand Grenades was strapped around her waist, and two large-caliber Energy Pistols were holstered at her sides. In her hands, she carried an extremely eye-catching Heavy Energy Sniper Rifle.
Behind her, aside from a few specially dressed elite warriors, there was a group of well-trained soldiers in uniform, all fully armed and alert to their surroundings.
In front of them, the so-called captain—the disheveled man—ignored the woman’s complaints and instead cooed at the infant in his arms: “Come here, let me introduce you; this is Aunt Lian.”
“Captain, I’m not that old! You should call me ‘Sister’ instead. After all, I’m still an unmarried young lady!”
Her words instantly drew a hearty laugh from all the soldiers, lightening the atmosphere considerably.
The baby looked up with wide eyes at this mature woman, holding a rotten apple in its hands, its lips smeared with blood.
A Lian slung her gun over her shoulder and walked over, gently wiping the blood from the corner of Fellow's mouth. With a sympathetic heart, she said, “What a poor Fellow! How could someone just abandon you here? Reduced to scavenging for rotten apples to eat—this will to survive is truly heartbreaking.” With that, she took the apple from Fellow's hands and tossed it away.
Fellow seemed to understand A Lian’s words and immediately burst into tears, sobbing loudly.
This sudden change in mood brought a heavy silence over the surroundings.
