Time flew by, and the relationships among the group grew closer. Wang Xinyue and Xu Dong had also become a couple, while Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan were nearing the stage of discussing marriage. Xu Nancheng had completely shed his old bad habits; there was no trace of them left.

As the final bell rang for the exam, the students of Ying High School erupted in cheers, filled with excitement over their graduation.
From a distance, Lin Menghan spotted Xu Nancheng and hurried over. "Nancheng! How did it go in the end?"
"Pretty smoothly!" Xu Nancheng replied as he rushed to embrace her.
With a beaming smile, Lin Menghan suggested, "How about we go to Qing Da together?"
"Sure! Wherever you go, I’ll follow!" Xu Nancheng exclaimed eagerly.
On the night of June 24th, the whole family gathered to check their exam results. As they clicked the inquiry button, numbers flashed on the screen, and joy filled the room. Everyone was thrilled, especially Xu Wenzhao and Lin Zhen—Qing Da was secured! It was known that very few students from Ying Zhong had ever been admitted to Qing Da, yet their family had two this time!
On August 1st, both received their acceptance letters from Qing Da.
However, after August 8th, Lin Menghan seemed a bit downcast.
"Lin Menghan, what's wrong these days? You seem a bit out of sorts," Xu Nancheng expressed his concern. "If something's bothering you, just tell me."
Lin Menghan sat silently on the sofa and shook her head.
That evening, she didn’t say much to Xu Nancheng and went to her room early. But not long after, loud sobs echoed from her room.
"Lin Menghan? What’s wrong? You can talk to me!" Xu Nancheng knocked on her door anxiously, his tone lacking its usual gentleness.
But Lin Menghan didn’t respond.
The commotion drew Lin Zhen and Xu Wenzhao outside her door. They tried various ways to coax her out but to no avail.
The next day, Xu Nancheng exhausted all methods he could think of but still couldn’t lift her spirits. In turn, he began to feel despondent himself.
By the night of August 15th, Xu Nancheng went to Zhou Yuxuan’s cake shop to pick her up after work. However, upon arrival, Zhou Yuxuan informed him that Lin Menghan had already left because she said there was something at home.
At that moment, his heart sank like a stone. He recalled Lin Menghan's unusual behavior over the past few days and felt certain that she was hiding something from him.
He called her, but each time he was met with the same mechanical voice: "Sorry, the number you have dialed is unavailable. Please try again later."
He could no longer remain calm and began searching everywhere for Lin Menghan's whereabouts. But in the dark, he had no idea where to look! He didn't know, but his sixth sense told him that Lin Menghan was slipping away from him. The thought made him feel weak; as he ran, he gradually came to a halt, collapsing onto the ground. He kept murmuring, "Lin Menghan, where are you? Lin Menghan, where are you?" Tears began to flow uncontrollably.
Around ten-thirty at night, Xu Nancheng sat alone on the deserted street, his eyes vacant. He truly felt that without Lin Menghan, he couldn't go on living. So much of what he had now was brought to him by her.
At that moment, his phone rang. He quickly picked it up and saw the caller ID: Han Bao.
He hurriedly answered, "Lin Menghan, where are you? I can't reach you!"
But on the other end, there was only the sound of sobbing. After a long silence, Xu Nancheng listened anxiously, "Lin Menghan!" At that moment, he too burst into tears.
"Do you remember the bridge behind Nancheng Community? Come here; I have something to tell you."
"Okay! Okay! I'm coming right over; just wait for me, Lin Menghan!" He said as he got up and rushed in that direction.
It wasn't far; if he ran from the front gate of the community, he could reach it in three or four minutes.
He ran all the way and finally found Lin Menghan. She was crouched on the bridge with her head buried in her knees, crying.
"Lin Menghan!" Xu Nancheng rushed over. Hearing his voice, she lifted her head and stood up, throwing herself into his arms.
Xu Nancheng held her tightly, afraid that if he loosened his grip even slightly, she would slip away.
"Lin Menghan, what's wrong? You've been like this for days!" He spoke through his own tears; his voice lacked its usual gentle tone and instead came out harshly. He wasn't blaming her—he was just very worried about her.
Lin Menghan didn't answer; she simply hid in his embrace and sobbed. After a long while, she finally managed to speak through her tears. "Nancheng, do you remember the novel I wrote?"
Xu Nancheng's body stiffened. "What does that have to do with anything?"
"It wasn't just a novel; it was real!"
Xu Nancheng felt as if his head might explode. What did she mean by that? What did she mean it was real?
Ignoring Xu Nancheng's confusion, Lin Menghan continued to speak while leaning against him. "Lin Chen is actually you; Xu Han is me. It wasn't a novel at all!"
The story she referred to—or rather the narrative—went like this: Lin Menghan originally came from Guangcheng and her family was poor. When Lin died from a fall, the landlord tried every excuse to evade responsibility and she only received a meager compensation of a few thousand yuan.
Through her own efforts, she got into her dream school, Shu University. Her family had little money and she wore tattered clothes that were nothing like what many wealthy people in big cities wore. Being introverted by nature made her an easy target for exclusion.
She didn't know what to do until one snowy day in her freshman year when she met a boy who saved her—yes, it was Xu Nancheng.
He pulled her out of despair; without him, perhaps she would have long been gone.
It was because of this that Lin Menghan, who was originally kind-hearted and sentimental, quietly developed feelings for Xu Nancheng. She always believed that Xu Nancheng liked her too, as he was always considering her feelings. However, she wasn't sure and didn't dare to take the risk.
The two maintained an ambiguous relationship, with Xu Nancheng quietly shielding Lin Menghan from harm caused by others. One day, Xu Nancheng finally couldn't hold back any longer and confessed his feelings to Lin Menghan. They became a couple and even met each other's parents.
However, on December 20th of the following year, which was Lin Menghan's birthday, Xu Nancheng mysteriously disappeared despite having promised to celebrate her birthday together. She had no idea where he had gone; his phone was unreachable, and she could only cry alone in her dormitory throughout the night.
Eventually, the devastating news arrived: Xu Nancheng was dead. Later investigations revealed that the incident occurred after someone spread rumors about Lin Menghan. Upon hearing these rumors, Xu Nancheng confronted them in an alley, which led to a fight. In the chaos, one of them accidentally struck him down.
When Lin Menghan heard the tragic news, it felt as if she had been struck by lightning; her entire world seemed to fall silent. Afterward, she made her way back to Ying Cheng to visit Xu Nancheng. As she cried while passing over a bridge, the world around her twisted and distorted. When she regained consciousness, she found herself in a hospital and learned that it was Xu Nancheng from high school who had saved her life. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for her—a new life that could also be seen as the end of another.
Xu Nancheng reflected on this situation in disbelief, shaking his head vigorously. "Lin Menghan, are you lying to me? You must be lying!" His emotions were so intense that he nearly lost his sanity.
He was a science prodigy and a firm believer in logic; he couldn't accept this! This wasn't a novel—how could something so bizarre happen? In other words, if it were true, then he would have to lose Lin Menghan this time around before encountering her again at Shu University in this timeline.
