Xu Dong felt somewhat awkward, unable to decide whether to stay or leave. He could only follow behind the two, silently observing everything that unfolded.
Shen Yaoqi walked ahead, seemingly oblivious to what was happening behind her, completely ignoring Chen Yi. Suddenly, Shen Yaoqi stopped and spun around sharply.
"Yao Yao!" Chen Yi exclaimed, his heart swelling with a hint of hope.
"Can you please stop following me? It's really annoying!" she shouted at Chen Yi, her eyes filled with impatience. "I just want to be alone for a while!" she yelled in a fit of frustration before turning away and leaving without looking back.
This left Chen Yi and Xu Dong in a state of confusion, unsure of what to do next.
"Bro! I really didn't mean it; how was I supposed to know she would react like that?" Xu Dong said, looking at Chen Yi with a hint of grievance. He thought to himself, I was just joking around; who knew she would get so angry?
Chen Yi patted Xu Dong on the shoulder, trying to comfort him. "I know you didn't mean it; don't take it too hard." Though he said this, he still felt a bit down. After all, he used to have a decent relationship with Shen Yaoqi.
"I'm sorry, bro," Xu Dong said apologetically. "I didn't think she'd take that joke so seriously. I won't make jokes like that again."
Chen Yi sighed and shook his head helplessly. "It's fine; what's done is done. I'll wait for her to cool off before I apologize. Hopefully, she'll forgive me." He let out another long sigh.
Seeing this, Xu Dong's unease gradually eased. He knew that Chen Yi wasn't blaming him.
What they didn't realize was that someone who truly loves you wouldn't explode over such trivial matters.
Meanwhile, Xu Nancheng was unaware of all this. Due to the holiday, their communication had been sparse, and Xu Nancheng's replies were infrequent, leaving them with limited knowledge about each other's situations.
After standing in silence for a moment, Xu Dong finally stammered out, "About that day... I'm really sorry!"
"It's nothing; I'm not that love-struck. Just let her calm down," Chen Yi replied, shaking his head with a neutral expression.
If they were out here now, it was to thank these two for what happened earlier.
"Nancheng," he said, pointing towards the intersection across from them.
However, Lin Menghan's eyes sparkled shyly as her cheeks flushed red.
"Alright then," Xu Nancheng said as he gently squeezed Lin Menghan's wrist.
Indeed, it was Lin Menghan's wrist he held.
In the past, it had always been Lin Menghan holding onto his wrist.
This time, Xu Nancheng thought to himself that he shouldn't always let the girl hold his hand.
It’s better to move!
He had been tangled in his thoughts all afternoon, unable to focus on his book. When he finally stepped outside, he closed the door behind him.
Walking side by side, he rubbed his hands together nervously. Lin Menghan, noticing that he wasn’t reaching for her hand, didn’t push the issue.
However, not long after, Xu Nancheng let his hand drop and began to grow bolder. He slowly reached out until his fingers brushed against her soft little hand. It trembled slightly, but she didn’t pull away.
At that moment, Lin Menghan felt a surge of anxiety. Was Nancheng really going to hold my hand? Should I let him? Why did it feel so different when I held someone else's hand compared to when someone held mine?
Xu Nancheng followed the curve of her fingers, exploring gently until he grasped her wrist. It wasn’t just her hand he held; it was also her heart. He hesitated to fully clasp her palm; the last time he had done so, it had made him blush.
Lin Menghan said nothing more, merely biting her rosy lips and lowering her gaze slightly. This was Xu Nancheng's first time doing something like this, and he felt shy as well.
They walked in silence until they spotted Chen Yi and another person ahead of them.
“Hey! Over here!” Xu Dong called out, waving at them.
Xu Dong and Chen Yi exchanged glances before looking back at Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan’s intertwined hands, a teasing smile spreading across their faces.
Seeing his friends wave, Xu Nancheng glanced at the girl beside him. She was blushing furiously now. Deep down, he felt quite shy himself, so he reluctantly released Lin Menghan’s delicate hand.
With a smile and a slight nod to the group, he walked alongside Lin Menghan towards their friends.
"Hello, Brother Xu Dong! Chen Yi Ge!" Lin Menghan greeted politely.
" Nancheng! Have you forgotten your brothers now that you have a girlfriend?" they teased. "Your sister has already greeted us! Why are you just standing there?"
"Hello!" Xu Nancheng forced a smile.
"No, Nancheng, are you really going to ignore them? They clearly aren't taking it seriously," Xu Nancheng looked confused.
He actually didn't need to greet them at all; they were practically family at this point. It felt even stranger to greet them.
"Stop teasing him! He's almost at a loss for words," Lin Menghan quickly waved her hands to stop them. "If he keeps this up, he might just shut down."
"Oh come on, are you serious? They're just joking with you!" Lin Menghan playfully punched Xu Nancheng lightly, like a gentle tickle.
"Oh, oh." He finally understood.
His two brothers found it hard to express themselves. On one hand, they thought the couple looked great together—truly a match made in heaven. On the other hand, they felt that Xu Nancheng was a bit slow on the uptake, and it left them somewhat speechless.
"Come on! Let's go eat barbecue!" Lin Menghan couldn't wait any longer; she was too eager to eat.
She pushed Xu Nancheng and called out to Chen Yi as they headed toward the barbecue stand.
