James laughed mockingly as he ruthlessly toyed with William. He watched the sheer terror and confusion on William's face, unable to contain his laughter, which echoed through the office like a blade, mercilessly slicing through the remnants of William's pride.
"Hahaha, William, you pathetic fool!" James's tone dripped with disdain and malice, his eyes glinting with a cold, cruel delight, as if everything before him was merely a game to mock the weak. "Look at you, a mess like a loser left out in the rain!" he taunted, his voice growing sharper.
William stood there in shock, his face pale and cold sweat pouring from his forehead. Each of James's words struck him like poisoned arrows to the chest. The man who had once been his only academic rival had transformed into an incomprehensible monster. And this monster was mercilessly tearing apart his confidence and dignity.
Suddenly, James waved his hand, causing the trash can in the corner of the office to wobble slightly. Crumpled tissues flew up as if controlled by an invisible hand, striking William's face, shoulders, and chest. Each tissue hit him accompanied by James's triumphant laughter, turning it into a shameless game of humiliation.
"Look at your pathetic state," James's eyes sparkled with malice. "You're such a pitiful worm that you can't even fight back when bullied, still dreaming of being the great head of the Department of History?" His voice was low and icy, mocking all of William's efforts and dreams over the years.
A storm of emotions churned within William—anger, humiliation, fear… all intertwining to suffocate him. He desperately tried to straighten up but felt as if his limbs were weighed down with lead. James's power left him feeling deeply helpless and terrified—this man was no longer human, at least not in any way he recognized.
"What… what are you?" William finally managed to speak, his voice trembling on the brink of collapse. "You… you're not human… what kind of monster are you?!"
James looked at him with a smug smile spreading across his face. He slowly bent down closer to William, speaking in a flippant yet cold tone: "Monster? No, William, I am a product of evolution, while you are merely a primitive man. I have transcended what you can comprehend." His tone was filled with mockery as if he were observing some ridiculous lower life form.
"Look at yourself now," James said as he reached out to pat William's face lightly. Each touch felt like an added weight of humiliation. "Timid as a mouse, unable to do anything—not even throw a punch. You’re truly pitiful to the point of being laughable, William." With that, he burst into laughter again, the sound reverberating through the office and grating on William’s nerves.
William stood rigidly, fists clenched tightly; yet in that moment, he found himself utterly unable to retaliate. He dared not swing his fists because he knew that James possessed an unassailable power over him. This fear quickened his heartbeat and made it feel as though a stone were pressing down on his chest. He could not comprehend how this man—once merely his academic rival—had become this way.
"What… what have you done? How are you controlling all of this?" William choked out in a voice laced with helpless pleading; he needed answers—he had to know what he was facing.
James regarded him with a chilling smile. "William, what I’ve done is something you will never understand. But I can tell you a secret—I don’t control everyone; I simply show them what they most want to see. And you, William—you are the exception. I keep you awake just to savor this moment, to enjoy watching your collapse."
He finished speaking and waved his hand again, sending more trash flying toward William, striking him like merciless whips. James watched him in his disheveled state, laughing even more recklessly.
William lowered his head, filled with humiliation and fear. He didn’t know whether James was human or something else, but he understood that he was powerless to resist this evil presence. His world seemed to have been completely eroded by this demon.
James wiped the mocking smile off his face and slowly walked toward William, suddenly delivering a sharp kick to his abdomen. William rolled away like a rag doll, curling up on the ground in pain, clutching his stomach with a face twisted in agony. James stood tall and composed, his movements elegant, as if the earlier act of violence had been nothing more than a casual flick of the wrist.
"You’re still so useless, William," James said disdainfully, glancing down at him before slowly turning to walk toward the office door. His steps were light and steady, his silhouette appearing particularly cold under the dim light.
Just as he reached the door, James stopped and turned back, a glint of malice and mockery flashing in his eyes. "Do you know, William? You can keep struggling, keep being that dog that looks like it can still fight back a little." His tone was icy, filled with cruelty and indifference. "But I can tell you that it’s all pointless. Your time is running out; enjoy it... enjoy your last moments of being a person."
With that, James burst into laughter, the sound chilling and piercing like needles through William's eardrums. Each laugh felt like a knife slicing through William's heart, leaving him in unbearable pain.
James continued to laugh as he walked out of the office, gently closing the door behind him, leaving William crumpled on the floor, utterly drained of strength. He weakly propped himself up with his hands on the floor, his chest heaving violently, his eyes filled with despair and confusion. He stared blankly at the ceiling, feeling as if the world was beginning to collapse around him. He couldn’t comprehend the supernatural power James had just displayed nor accept that someone who had once been an academic rival had now become his most terrifying nightmare.
Sitting on the ground with hollow eyes, William felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness and despair intertwining with the pain in his chest and the fear in his heart. He realized that James had become unfathomably powerful, and perhaps he could never turn back now.
