Chapter Four
I forced my weak body back home.
The empty room seemed to mock my disarray.
I collapsed onto the sofa, waves of pain surged through my stomach, as if something were clawing at the walls of my gut.
I tightly shut my eyes, trying to calm myself, but images of He Yun and Xu Feng flashed through my mind like a movie reel.
Their intertwined fingers, their embracing silhouettes, even the casual glances they exchanged pierced my heart like sharp thorns.
I took a deep breath, struggling to control the emotions threatening to overflow.
No, I cannot give up like this.
I must find out why He Yun treated me this way.
I picked up my phone and dialed He Yun's number.
The phone rang for what felt like an eternity, each tone striking at my nerves until it was finally answered.
"Hello?"
He Yun's voice sounded weary, tinged with a hint of hoarseness, as if he had been through a long tug-of-war.
"He Yun, we need to talk."
My voice was dry, as if it had been squeezed out from my throat.
"What is there left for us to talk about?"
He Yun's tone was filled with indifference, like the biting cold wind of winter, instantly freezing me in place.
"He Yun, I know you still have feelings for me."
I tried to convince myself, as well as her.
"I know that the reason you're marrying Xu Feng must be due to some hardship, right? Tell me, what really happened?"
"Lu Chen, you're wrong."
He Yun's voice was firm and unwavering.
"I don't love you. The reason I'm marrying Xu Feng is that I love him."
These few short words struck me like a thunderclap in my mind.
"No, I don't believe it!"
I nearly shouted, my heart racing violently as if it wanted to burst from my chest.
"You must be lying to me! Tell me, did Xu Feng threaten you? Did he force you with something? Just tell me!"
"Lu Chen, why can't you accept reality?"
He Yun's voice carried a hint of helplessness and annoyance.
"We're done. Why do you keep clinging on? All this does is make me dislike you even more."
"He Yun, I love you."
I spoke almost pleadingly, my voice trembling with a hint of despair.
"I can't live without you, do you understand? Without you, my life loses all meaning. I'm like a walking corpse, devoid of a soul."
"Lu Chen, that's enough!"
He Yun's tone turned stern, carrying a hint of warning.
"I don't love you. I never have! Do you hear me? Never!"
"He Yun, why are you saying this?"
I felt my breath becoming labored, as if a massive stone was pressing down on my chest, making it hard to breathe.
"You know how much I love you. Have you forgotten all that I've sacrificed for you?"
"Lu Chen, I don't want to waste any more time talking to you."
He Yun's voice was icy, devoid of any emotion.
"I hope you won't disturb my life anymore. We have no relationship left between us."
With that, He Yun hung up the phone without hesitation.
I stood there, holding my phone in a daze, her resolute words echoing in my ears like sharp knives, stabbing at my heart again and again.
I don't love you. I never have.
That phrase felt like a curse, resonating endlessly in my mind, impossible to shake off.
My heart felt as if it had been hollowed out, empty and devoid of any sensation.
I collapsed onto the sofa, feeling utterly powerless, as if all my strength had been drained away.
My world had completely crumbled.
I had lost He Yun, lost everything.
What meaning did my life have now?
I picked up the bottle of liquor on the table and took a large swig.
The fiery liquid coursed down my throat and into my stomach, igniting like a flame, scorching my insides.
But I no longer cared.
I didn’t care about anything anymore.
All I wanted was to numb myself, to forget it all.
I drank glass after glass until I was thoroughly intoxicated, losing all sense of reality.
