At eleven o'clock at night, after taking a shower, I was getting ready for bed when a strange phone call came in.
As soon as I picked up, a sharp and aggressive female voice pierced through the receiver: "Are you shameless? Seducing a married man and playing both sides!"
I was taken aback for a few seconds before responding, "You must have the wrong number."
The woman let out a cold laugh. "Ma Hui, stop pretending! I know all about your little affair with Gao Qing. You two were flirting on WeChat last night!"
So it was Gao Qing's wife. A wave of nausea washed over me.
Gao Qing was as dull as a pig; I found his presence unbearable and often wished I could kick him into outer space to let him fend for himself, just to spare the Earth from his existence.
I replied coldly, "Listen, lady, you should really see a psychiatrist. I have no interest in Gao Qing whatsoever. I was in a meeting last night and didn’t chat with anyone. If you don’t believe me, feel free to ask my subordinates at the company."
With that, I hung up the phone.
I found Gao Qing's number and called him directly, getting straight to the point: "Your wife just called me and accused me of having an affair with you. Gao Qing, you need to handle your wife and make her apologize to me."
Gao Qing's voice came through with an innocent tone: "Ma Hui, please don’t be upset. I have no idea what’s gotten into her. She often checks my phone; she must have seen something. I apologize on her behalf."
I said indifferently, "If your wife doesn't apologize, we'll have to meet in court."
Gao Qing on the other end panicked, "No, Ma Hui, don't escalate this. I was wrong; I'll apologize, take you out for a meal, and buy you a gift."
I couldn't be bothered to argue with him. I hung up the phone decisively and blocked him.
I stared at myself in the mirror.
The person looking back at me appeared thoroughly bullied, with bloodshot eyes and swollen cheeks that looked like they were stuffed with dumplings.
I forced a smile at her.
The smile looked worse than crying.
I shook my head and sighed.
Li Hui and I had gotten married in secret.
At work, we maintained a superior-subordinate relationship; to outsiders, we were just strangers who happened to be married.
So when faced with such insults earlier, I had no choice but to endure it, unable to reveal my marriage to Li Hui.
We had obtained our marriage certificate a month ago.
He had entered the industry many years before me and was now one of the top stars in the country, with countless fans.
As for me, I was just an ordinary employee in the marketing department, performing mediocrity without any outstanding achievements.
So no one suspected that we would actually get married.
Not even anyone knew that Li Hui and I had any connection outside of work.
Li Hui was very busy; we spent little time together, which made our secret marriage...
Only our parents knew, no one else. I was leading an S-level project, with all the team members being elites from various departments. However, the female colleague on the project went on maternity leave, leaving Gao Qing as my closest coworker.
But who would have thought that two weeks ago, he actually flirted with the new intern in our project group? I scolded him harshly. After that, he became much more restrained. I frowned in displeasure. It was too unlucky, just too unlucky. I searched for a GIF of a fire pit and jumped three times over it to ward off bad luck.
The next day at work, I completely ignored Gao Qing. During the meeting, he sensed my indifference. When the meeting ended and everyone left, he pretended to cough lightly.
I feigned not hearing him and continued packing up my computer. "Ma Hui," he called out to me, "I'm sorry about last night." He rubbed his hands together and cautiously studied my face. "I've already scolded her; she's just a vulgar housewife. Don't stoop to her level."
