Chapter Fourteen: The Choice of Love and Family
In the deep of night, the Gu Family study was brightly lit. Gu Changting stood before the desk, his gaze fixed on the computer screen. The latest threatening video from Li Shudong had arrived via an anonymous email. In the video, Li Shudong held a thick file, his tone chilling:
"Gu Changting, here are all the records of the deal between the Gu Family and my father from years ago. If these records become public, how long do you think the Gu Family can survive?"
He paused, a more sinister smile creeping across his face. "I want your response by noon tomorrow. No compromise? Then prepare for the collapse of the Gu Family."
Gu Changting clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. He knew that if these records were exposed, it would plunge the Gu Family into an irretrievable crisis.
"Chang Ting, you cannot compromise." Ruolan stood at the door, her gaze resolute. She had heard the threats in the video and seen the struggle in Gu Changting's eyes.
"Lanlan, this matter has nothing to do with you." Gu Changting's voice was low; he did not want Ruolan to be dragged into this storm.
"How can it have nothing to do with me?" Ruolan took a few steps closer, her voice trembling yet firm. "The Gu Family is your responsibility, and mine too. I cannot stand by and watch you give up everything."
Gu Changting turned to look at her deeply. "But I cannot risk you getting hurt again."
Ruolan gently grasped his hand. "If the Gu Family falls, you will regret it for a lifetime. I want to help you."
The next morning, Ruolan contacted a trusted media friend. She arranged to meet in a small conference room, determined to resolve the crisis in her own way.
In the conference room, Ruolan spoke clearly: "Li Shudong's threat is not aimed at me personally but at the Gu Family. I need your help to bring the truth to light without harming the family's reputation."
The media friend nodded. "You mean to proactively acknowledge past issues while clarifying their origins?"
Ruolan took a deep breath and nodded firmly. "Yes. Only with sincerity and transparency can we help the public understand the full picture."
Just as Ruolan prepared to act, Li Shudong discovered her plan. He immediately sent people to try to stop the information from spreading and intensified his pressure, claiming that Ruolan was merely a "shield" for the Gu Family and that they had been hiding the truth all along.
Public opinion quickly escalated, with a flood of negative comments directed at the Gu Family once again. This time, however, the focus shifted squarely onto Ruolan, labeling her as the "scapegoat of the Gu Family."
The immense pressure caused Ruolan's health to deteriorate again. While organizing documents, she suddenly felt dizzy and lost her balance, collapsing heavily onto the floor.
"Lanlan!" Gu Changting rushed in at once and saw her lying in a pool of blood; he nearly lost control. He scooped Ruolan up and dashed toward the hospital.
The hospital lights were blinding as doctors hurriedly wheeled in a stretcher into the operating room. Gu Changting stood outside the door, exhaustion etched on his face as he clenched his fists tightly, whispering self-reproachfully: "If I had stopped her sooner, this wouldn't have happened."
Before being taken into surgery, Ruolan gently grasped Gu Changting's hand, her voice weak but clear: "Chang Ting... if I wake up, I hope to see you unburdened."
Gu Changting's eyes reddened as he held her hand tightly, softly promising: "You will wake up; I will make everything better."
Ruolan's surgery lasted five hours, with Gu Changting standing vigil outside the operating room without leaving for a moment. He reflected on their moments together and felt an unprecedented sense of helplessness.
Meanwhile, some members of the Gu Family's upper management began to waver, but Gu Changting stepped forward decisively and declared: "No matter what happens, I will protect both the Gu Family and Ruolan."
Li Shudong attempted to exploit the internal divisions within the Gu Family, but his tactics were gradually exposed. Gu Changting's determination began to shift public opinion in a different direction.
