Chapter Six: The Trial of Fate
Su Ruolan walked through the winding alley, a simple basket of vegetables in hand, her gaze fixed on the cobblestones beneath her feet, though her thoughts had already drifted far away. Since returning to her hometown, this quiet life seemed to temporarily shield her from past turmoil. Yet, the dull ache that occasionally throbbed in her chest reminded her that avoidance would not change anything.
"Miss Su, your examination report is ready," the doctor said as he handed a stack of papers to Ruolan, his expression grave. "The tumor has spread and requires surgery as soon as possible; otherwise..."
"Thank you," Ruolan interrupted, lowering her head slightly. She folded the report and placed it into her bag. "But I... still need to think about it."
The doctor frowned, seemingly wanting to say more, but ultimately sighed: "Time waits for no one. The longer you delay, the harder it will be to control."
Ruolan nodded and turned to leave the clinic. The bustling street felt distant to her; she knew she could not stop. There were still unfinished matters awaiting her.

Meanwhile, Gu Changting stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, holding a brief investigation report with a furrowed brow. The report contained only one line—Su Ruolan was currently living in an old district of her hometown and was in poor health.
"What is she running from?" Gu Changting murmured to himself, his gaze deepening. He pressed a button on his phone and dialed a number.
"Li Xiaoling, this is Gu Changting. I want to know what your friend is hiding..."
There was a moment of silence on the other end before Li Xiaoling replied, "What you want to know should have been clear long ago. She has sacrificed so much for you, yet you've always misunderstood her. What do you want now?"
"She's sick, isn't she?" Gu Changting's voice was low but carried an undeniable authority.
Li Xiaoling gritted her teeth before finally whispering, "She doesn't want to burden you and doesn't need you to find her. She just wants some peace."
After hanging up the phone, Gu Changting's hand clenched into a fist, a dull pain settling in his chest. He looked out the window, his eyes filled with complex emotions.

Lin Wanran stood on the balcony of Gu Family Villa, a gentle breeze brushing against her hair. She turned and walked into the study, holding a document with a soft smile on her face.
"Chang Ting, this cooperation plan needs your signature," she placed the document on the table and casually mentioned, "I heard you've been keeping an eye on Su Ruolan; she really is hard to forget."
Gu Changting looked up, his gaze icy as it swept over her. "Wanran, that's not something you should be asking about."
Lin Wanran's expression shifted slightly but quickly returned to normal. "I'm just worried about you. Since Ruolan has left, let her live her own life. The Gu Family has more important matters for you to focus on."
Gu Changting did not respond further; he simply pushed the document aside and grabbed his car keys before leaving without another word. Lin Wanran watched him go, gripping the cup in her hand tightly, a hint of jealousy flickering in her eyes.

Ruolan was at the flower stall at the alley's entrance selecting bouquets when she suddenly felt a familiar gaze upon her from behind. Slowly turning around, she met Gu Changting's deep eyes.
"What are you doing here?" Ruolan asked calmly, trying to mask the turmoil within her.
"This is what I want to ask you," Gu Changting's voice was low. "Do you think hiding here will keep me from finding you?"
Ruolan lowered her eyes, her fingers gently brushing the edge of the bouquet. "I have a new life now. You don't need to look for me anymore."
"A new life?" Gu Changting frowned slightly, his gaze sweeping over her somewhat haggard face. " Ruolan, your health..."
"It's fine," she interrupted him, her voice laced with indifference. "So please, don't interfere in my life anymore."
Gu Changting stood there for a long time, staring at her back, ultimately choosing not to pursue her. His instincts told him she was hiding something, and he had to find out what it was.

On the street at night, Ruolan curled up by the window, a sharp pain piercing her chest. She pressed her hand against her heart, struggling to hold back tears.
Her phone lit up with a message from Li Xiaoling: Gu Changting knows about your situation back home. He won't give up easily. What will you do?
Ruolan let out a soft laugh, setting her phone down as she murmured to herself, "What can I do? What can I possibly do..."
The cold moonlight streamed in through the window, stretching her shadow long and making it seem incredibly lonely.
