A few days passed, and by Friday, Counselor Teacher Zhou held a class meeting. He began with a summary of the semester so far and briefly outlined the agenda for the day:
The first item was to elect a new class committee through anonymous voting by all thirty-eight students.
The second item was to convey the school's opinions on work-study programs.
The third item was to announce the list of students receiving financial aid for low-income families.
It was then that Hu Ruoyun realized why Jie Bing had been acting particularly well in the dormitory lately—he had been proactively helping everyone with hot water and showing concern for his roommates from rural backgrounds, like Third Sister Hu Ruoyun, Cui Shuigen, and Lao Si Liu Jiawang. It turned out he was laying the groundwork for today’s election!
It would have been better if he had just been straightforward with his roommates; they lived in the same dormitory after all, and it wouldn’t have taken much to communicate directly instead of playing adult games.
After the first agenda item concluded, Jie Bing received only seven votes! The former Youth League Secretary Ji Hongmin, who excelled in academics and actively participated in class activities, was elected as the new class monitor with twenty-seven votes. Hu Ruoyun was elected as the Youth League Secretary, and Cui Shuigen became the sports committee member.
When the final results were announced, Jie Bing not only failed to become class monitor but didn’t win any other position either.
For the second agenda item, Teacher Zhou conveyed several opinions from Jiangbei University’s Student Affairs Office regarding work-study programs for students. The opinions stated that work-study opportunities were not limited to tutoring or participating in paid school jobs. As long as it did not interfere with studies and complied with existing laws and regulations, students were encouraged to engage in economic activities within reasonable limits.
For the third agenda item, Cui Shuigen was listed among those receiving financial aid from the school, which provided a subsidy of 500 yuan each academic year.
Jie Bing raised his hand to speak, arguing that since Cui Shuigen was making money from business outside of school, he should not continue receiving financial aid from the school! Teacher Zhou signaled for him to sit down after listening to his comments without expressing any opinion or changing the subsidy list. Jie Bing sat down with a grim expression, oblivious to the strange looks his classmates were giving him.
In the following days, Jie Bing's mood worsened. He first exploded at their leader Zhao Jinpu over some water from his thermos and then yelled at their second-in-command for borrowing toilet paper during an urgent moment. He seemed to be going through a midlife crisis.
Half a month later, both of Jie Bing's parents came to visit and treated all their dorm mates to a meal at Peach Garden Restaurant near the east gate. During dinner, Jie Bing's mother introduced herself as having been promoted to deputy director at the District Justice Bureau and mentioned that Jie Bing's father was the director of the Science and Technology Committee in Dongyang City’s Fulong District. She also asked everyone to take care of her son since he was still young and emphasized the importance of unity and kindness among them, warning against bullying anyone weaker.
Several classmates exchanged bewildered glances, unsure of what to make of it all. Perhaps in their eyes, the universe ended at Dongyang City.
On another day, Hu Ruoyun received a letter from her younger sister Xiao Feng:
"Dear Brother,
Mom and Dad, Xiao Hu and I are all doing well. Second Uncle, Second Aunt, Grandma, Grandfather, Uncle, Aunt-in-law are also fine; don’t worry about us."
Whenever you see Sister Mona, please tell her that both Xiao Hu and I miss her!
...
I received the cured meat sent by your classmate. Our parents said it was delicious, and they shared some with Second Uncle, Second Aunt, Grandma, and Aunt-in-law.
Hu Ruoyun recalled that not long ago, Cui Shuigen had inexplicably asked to see his ID card. It must have been this guy who had his family send it.
He pulled Cui Shuigen, who was dozing on the upper bunk, and asked. Cui Shuigen grinned foolishly and said, "It's nothing, Brother San. I had my dad go to the market to pick out some good ones for me... Don't be so picky with me; that would be too boring."
On another day, Hu Ruoyun received a letter from Zhang Meina, a classmate from the Provincial Police Academy.
Zhang asked Hu Ruoyun when he would be free because she and her boyfriend wanted to visit him at Jiangbei Postal and Telecommunications School to see Mao Na. "We're all from the same hometown; we should stay close and visit each other more often. It's not far from home, and we can frequently keep in touch when we return to Annan..."
Having learned from past experiences, Hu Ruoyun now makes it a point to visit Mao Na's school almost every weekend to "check in." He also mentioned Zhang Meina's intentions to Mao Na, who did not give a clear response: "Sure, let's find an opportunity to get together sometime!"
beauty Mao did not specify when or where they would meet or in what form the gathering would take place. Hu Ruoyun didn't dare make any decisions on his own, so Zhang Meina's proposal for her and her boyfriend to meet Hu Ruoyun and Mao Na was indefinitely postponed...
