For four or five consecutive weeks, Mao Na had not sought out Hu Ruoyun. Left waiting with no sign of him, she finally stormed over in a fit of anger to confront him.
Mao Na arrived on a Saturday morning. Hu Ruoyun, along with Lao Si, Liu Jiawang, and Cui Shuigen, was playing basketball on the playground. The leader, Zhao Jinpu, and the second-in-command, Miao Shujie, were busy washing clothes in the laundry room, leaving only Jie Bing in the dormitory, preoccupied with writing something.
Mao Na knocked on the door and entered. Seeing that Hu Ruoyun was not in his bed, she asked Jie Bing, “Excuse me, do you know where Hu Ruoyun went?”
Noticing Mao Na's displeased expression, Jie Bing stood up to respond, “He seems to have gone to the basketball court…” Then he added casually, “Third Sister has been quite busy lately. I think she’s involved in selling some shoe insoles… It’s really not a good influence. Our counselor, Teacher Zhou, said that such behavior is detrimental to the image of contemporary college students and goes against the conduct guidelines for students on campus… He even mentioned wanting to have a serious talk with her!”
In reality, Jie Bing had performed poorly in the last exam and was at the bottom of the class. Even Cui Shuigen, whom he looked down upon, had scored eighth in the class, while Third Sister had come in third. Compared to them, Zhao Jinpu and Miao Shujie had also done better than him.
During this time, it seemed that Cui Shuigen had made some money alongside Third Sister. They both had new coats now, and Cui Shuigen had replaced his worn-out sneakers with a new pair…
All of this weighed heavily on Jie Bing’s sense of superiority: wasn’t everything supposed to be better for him?
While discussing class matters with the counselor, he had said, “Teacher Zhou, I feel there’s a bad atmosphere in our class right now. Some students are forming cliques just to make money and even skipping classes! You need to take action; otherwise, who knows what it will turn into if it spreads throughout the school!”
Although Teacher Zhou hadn’t responded at the time, Jie Bing knew he must have taken note of it.
Mao Na only knew that there was someone named Jie Bing in Hu Ruoyun's dormitory but didn’t know exactly who he was. Hearing Jie Bing's words made her blood boil: just because of a little money-making venture, he started distancing himself from me! The more she thought about it, the more aggrieved she felt; overwhelmed by her emotions, tears began to fall.
At that moment, Zhao Jinpu returned carrying a basin. Upon seeing Mao Na standing there, he quickly greeted her: “Aren’t you Third Sister’s sister? He went to play basketball with Lao Si and Cui Shuigen! Would you like me to take you over to find him?”
Being older than them, Mao Na quickly composed herself: “It’s fine; I can go by myself. You all carry on; thank you!”
Meanwhile, Hu Ruoyun was on the basketball court facing off against Lao Si and Liu Jiawang when he suddenly heard Cui Shuigen call out to him: “Brother San, isn’t that your sister?”
Hu Ruoyun didn’t catch on at first and thought Cui Shuigen was insulting him. He shot back: “Your sister!”
Lao Si paused to look over: “Brother San, it really is your sister!”
Finally realizing what they meant, Hu Ruoyun turned his gaze toward Mao Na standing outside the court. Excitedly tossing the ball toward Lao Si, he exclaimed: “You guys keep playing!”
However, when Mao Na saw Hu Ruoyun running toward her with joy on his face, her expression turned cold as she walked away angrily.
Having not seen him for several weeks left her wondering what was going on with him—was he unwell? What could be wrong?
Or had things rekindled with Zhang Meina? Had it developed that far?
It’s true that sometimes both men and women in love can become blind to their own circumstances.
In a rush, she hurried over early in the morning, only to see that black lump of charcoal bouncing around, playing basketball with others. All her worries instantly turned into a myriad of grievances...
Isn't this just bullying?
Mao Na turned around, fuming as she walked out, counting angrily in her mind: 1, 2, 3... If I reach 10 and you still haven't come over, just wait and see!
