On the weekend, in the cemetery, a light rain fell steadily.
When Zheng Mengni arrived, it was still sunny; the rain came unexpectedly. She stood quietly in front of Ye Bingran's gravestone for a while, just as she had done before. Zheng Mengni rarely visited this place, only coming when she faced setbacks and needed solitude. She recalled how he had endured suffering from illness yet persevered without giving up.
This served as a source of motivation for her. Standing before his gravestone, she cleared her mind and relaxed her emotions, comforting herself before fully immersing in her work.
Suddenly, the coolness on her skin began to fade away. A shadow fell in front of Zheng Mengni from behind. Turning around, she saw Ye Bingran holding an umbrella over her head, shielding her from the cold raindrops that threatened to intrude upon her world.
He maintained just the right distance, the umbrella not large enough to cover him completely, leaving half of his body exposed to the rain.
"When did you come back?" Zheng Mengni asked. She remembered Ye Bingran mentioning that he had been working in the city and had taken on a godfather figure who had helped him, which meant he needed to stay in the city for a while to repay that kindness.
Ye Bingran smiled. "I just got back today."
"Business trip?"
He nodded. "Yes, a business trip."
"How long will you be staying in the city this time?"
Ye Bingran feigned mystery and fell silent for two seconds before his smile widened as he casually replied, "Permanently."
Zheng Mengni was taken aback. "Permanently? You weren't fired, were you?"
Ye Bingran teased her. "Yeah, now I’ll have to go hungry. I wonder if your company has any vacant positions for me; I could apply. My requirements are low—just a security guard will do, with food and lodging included, salary negotiable."
"Wait," Zheng Mengni said, puzzled. "You were doing well with your godfather; what happened? Did you anger someone and get fired?"
Suddenly, Ye Bingran chuckled softly, his laughter like a clear mountain spring—crisp and melodious. "It makes me really happy to see that you care about me."
Zheng Mengni raised her hand to grip the umbrella handle and gently pushed it toward Ye Bingran while taking a step forward so that both of them were sheltered under it.
"So, you really were fired?"
Ye Bingran couldn’t bear to see her confusion and distress any longer. He explained, "I was just joking. My godfather specifically sent me back to work in the city. Before I left, I handed over all my responsibilities; now I just need to focus here. I don’t know if I’m lucky enough to earn Miss Zheng’s favor; could you arrange a position for me at your company? We can collaborate and progress together."
Zheng Mengni pondered for a moment, her eyes brightening. "Oh, so you came looking for me to pull some strings?"
Ye Bingran looked down calmly, his deep and clear eyes fixed on her gentle face as he softly pleaded, "Yes, considering our bond as sisters, could you help me out? Please?"
Zheng Mengni firmly refused, "No way. If I let you take the back door, wouldn't that be unfair to the employees who got in through the proper channels?"
Ye Bingran let out a soft sound of surprise, "Then what should I do? I have to rely on my own abilities."
"Alright, alright," he said, mumbling under his breath, "In that case, I won't apply for the security position."
Zheng Mengni asked, "Which position are you interested in then?"
Ye Bingran smiled with his lips pressed together, "Is the personal secretary position still available? That seems a bit beneath your talents."
He countered, "Who says? That's clearly one of the most important positions."
Zheng Mengni couldn't help but chuckle, "Yes, perhaps that's how you've set your standards."
Ye Bingran smiled without saying a word, nodding in agreement.
Because he liked her, he was willing to be her backdrop, her support, her guardian. Whenever Zheng Mengni needed him, he would appear at once to help her solve problems. He would strategize for her and alleviate her worries.
So who said that being a secretary wasn't the most important position?
