After the lawyer announced the will, Guan Su Lin remained utterly still, maintaining an expression of calm indifference. However, a fleeting glint of malice flickered in his eyes, vanishing as quickly as it appeared, almost like an illusion.
He toyed with the ring on his finger, silent and observant, scanning the room. The faces of everyone in the hall resembled a spilled palette of colors—strange and amusing.
The crowd, especially Guan Junjin, expressed strong doubts about Guan Li's will. With the engagement ceremony not even completed, how could this woman claim one-fifth of the inheritance?
Zheng Mengni stepped forward fearlessly: "According to legal regulations, an inheritance can be designated to any individual or organization outside of the heirs. Are you questioning Mr. Guan's judgment or the validity of his signed will?"
Guan Junjin was at a loss for words. However, both Guan Yao and Guan Su Lin remained silent. If he continued to press the issue, it might lead others to suspect he had ulterior motives regarding the inheritance.
Guan Junjin gritted his teeth in frustration and attempted to shift the focus. He tentatively called out, "Sixth Brother."
Guan Su Lin showed no reaction, seemingly ignoring him as his gaze remained fixed on Zheng Mengni's face.
Suddenly, he smiled lightly: "Father’s decisions are undoubtedly the fairest. As his children, we should simply obey; there’s no need to question him. After all, he is no longer with us. We must not do anything that would disturb his peace in the afterlife."
As he spoke, he finally lifted his gaze and looked deeply at Zheng Mengni: "Isn't that right?"
He seemed to have guessed Guan Li's intentions and was subtly reminding Zheng Mengni that since Guan Li chose to trust her, she must not let the old man down. She needed to be mindful of how to use the inheritance that was given to her.
One could acquire wealth, but one must also live to enjoy it. Being too greedy could lead to dire consequences.
Guan Su Lin smiled without speaking. Zheng Mengni returned a gentle smile as well. Their exchange was filled with tenderness yet felt like two blades crossing each other at their throats.
The next day, as Zheng Mengni packed her belongings in preparation for departure, the door suddenly burst open. A few bodyguards entered and surrounded her.
"Miss Zheng, we need you to come with us."
"What is this about?" Zheng Mengni asked calmly as she raised her gaze.
"Guan wishes to register your marriage."
"Oh really? Then please do me a favor and bring Guan Su Lin here to see me."
Zheng Zheng wanted to see me, so I came.
Before the bodyguard could make a move, Guan Su Lin casually walked in from outside. He had dressed deliberately, his hair meticulously styled, and the light-colored suit transformed him from the once charming and carefree Young Master into a more refined figure.
With a gentle smile playing on his lips, Guan Su Lin held a women's coat in matching colors. He stopped in front of Zheng Mengni and seriously gestured, "This color suits you. Try it on."
Registering for marriage? I had no idea this play had such an unconventional subplot.
Zheng Mengni brushed aside the coat in front of her and stood up to meet Guan Su Lin's gaze, her eyes cold and unyielding.
If we are to act, we must do it thoroughly. Besides, I never claimed this was just acting. Guan Su Lin was earnest, with no hint of jest in his demeanor. "Zheng Zheng, I truly cherish you. Keep me by your side, and I promise you a life of splendor."
"Do you love me, or do you love the inheritance I hold?" Zheng Mengni shot back. "Guan Su Lin, you have the talent for deception; not a word you say is ever sincere."
"How can it not be sincere? Marry me, and I'll share my fortune with you. What do you say? Think it over."
Zheng Mengni reached out to touch his cheek; if only she could peel away the facade to see how much deceit and scheming lay beneath.
Guan Su Lin took her fingers in his hand and lowered his head to kiss them reverently while locking eyes with Zheng Mengni.
She pressed her hand against his lips—cool, lacking warmth, softer than she had imagined.
With a smile, Zheng Mengni said, "Put away your schemes. What you should be thinking about is how to please me. If I’m happy, sharing a little with you might not be out of the question."
