Guan Su Lin spoke calmly, "Please come early; don’t arrive too late and disturb our rest."
Rest?
Guan Qingmo immediately thought of the implications, realizing that such indiscretion would annoy the girls. However, he didn’t want Guan Su Lin to be bothered by Zheng Mengni, so after inviting his friends, he specifically threatened everyone not to arrive early or even on time. The later they came, the better; ideally, they would party all night long, leaving no opportunity for Guan Su Lin.
Guan Qingmo couldn’t help but laugh. Since he rarely smiled, this expression only made others feel uneasy, especially Guan Miao, who was used to seeing him act crazily.
Guan Miao’s heart raced at his strange smile, unsure whether to invite her close friends to this Hongmen Banquet.
In the afternoon, Guan Su Lin prepared materials for the evening’s event and left with her assistant. Tan Yan stayed behind to rest due to her visual impairment. Meanwhile, Guan Qingmo insisted on tagging along with Zheng Mengni and Guan Miao, claiming he loved fishing.
It was his first time fishing, and he didn’t even know how to set up properly, clumsily getting in the way. Zheng Mengni helped him get ready while he simply sat still, holding the fishing rod and waiting for a bite.
Bored out of his mind, he struck up a conversation with the kind uncle nearby, chatting loudly and completely ruining the fishing atmosphere. This made Guan Miao lose all interest in fishing.
Zheng Mengni didn’t particularly enjoy fishing either; she had come along just to bond with Guan Miao since she was the only daughter of the main family. It couldn’t hurt to get closer to her.
Noticing Guan Miao’s dwindling enthusiasm, Zheng Mengni cheerfully approached Guan Qingmo. She spoke softly, “You’ll be in charge of grilling the fish tonight. I’ll take Guan Miao back to get something from the house. Just hold onto that fishing rod and don’t move; it would be a shame to waste your efforts.”
Guan Qingmo understood that Zheng Mengni was entrusting him with an incredibly honorable task. To win over her uncle and make it easier for him to pursue his own interests later on, he knew he had to listen to her.
“I promise,” he said confidently. “Don’t worry; I won’t budge an inch.”
Zheng Mengni smiled even more gently. “Okay then, I believe in you.” Her eyes sparkled with warmth and beauty, leaving Guan Qingmo somewhat dazed and light-headed.
As they entered the villa, Guan Miao gently tugged at Zheng Mengni’s sleeve and hesitated before asking, “Zheng Zheng, do we really have to go back to fish? With Guan Qingmo making all that noise over there, we won’t catch anything. I’m feeling a bit… reluctant.”
Zheng Mengni’s gaze softened. “Let’s not go back; there are too many mosquitoes over there that could bite us. Besides, Guan Qingmo promised he would behave and stay there fishing.”
Guan Miao looked incredulous. “Really?”
She completely didn't believe that Guan Qingmo would be so obedient. She feared that as soon as they left, he would throw the fishing rod and bait into the lake.
However, this time, contrary to Guan Miao's expectations, Guan Qingmo actually sat by the shore with the fishing rod for an entire afternoon. He didn't know to change the bait, nor did he think to change spots, and he returned empty-handed after a long day.
Well, not entirely empty-handed; he did come back with a handful of mosquito bites—red, swollen, and itching like crazy.
When he returned to the villa, Guan Miao was happily watching TV with Zheng Mengni. It was then that Guan Qingmo realized he had been played.
Zheng Mengni's eyes sparkled as she said, "A Mo, you're back!"
Looking at Zheng Mengni's delicate and pure smile, he couldn't muster even a hint of anger.
Guan Qingmo felt a bit insecure and anxious; he was so afraid that Zheng Mengni would ask him how many fish he had caught. After spending the whole afternoon feeding mosquitoes, he hadn't caught a single one. He didn't even know how to reel in the line properly when it was time to pack up; he just wrapped it up haphazardly, making it look both messy and loose.
