Zheng Mengni smiled in response, waiting until Guan Su Lin's figure completely disappeared for half a moment before she turned slowly, deliberately searching for Guan Qingmo and Guan Miao among the crowd.
Confirming that neither of them was present, Zheng Mengni softly called out to a passing servant. "Hello, could you please tell me where Miss Guan Miao is? I would like to discuss tomorrow's outing with her."
The servant raised a hand and pointed to the side. "They have classes in the afternoon; they are probably in their room preparing."
Zheng Mengni thanked the servant quietly and walked forward, though her direction deviated from where the servant had pointed. She already knew where she wanted to go; asking for directions was merely a pretense to show that she had done something.
Remembering the direction Tan Yan had taken after leaving, Zheng Mengni turned and used the wall to shield her body. After confirming that the servant had left, she quietly ascended the stairs in another direction.
Zheng Mengni turned left, nearly getting herself dizzy. She took out her phone to capture pictures of the surrounding distinctive decorations, just in case she couldn't find her way back later.
She didn't understand why Tan Yan was at the Guan Family's residence; all she knew was that he had no good intentions towards her here. Tan Yan wouldn't be oblivious to this fact. After all, she was the one who had exposed his scandal and caused him to be sent abroad.
Zheng Mengni felt a twinge of anxiety. If he could be so ruthless towards a complete stranger, how much more so would he be towards her, the one who had caused him to stumble?
It wasn't hard to guess what kind of methods he might use to take revenge on her. However, Zheng Mengni knew that panicking wouldn't help. Instead of waiting for disaster to strike, it would be better to take the initiative, uncover Tan Yan's intentions, and test what he was planning here.
Finally, Zheng Mengni's steps slowed as she stopped in front of a slightly ajar door. She had been following him for a while now and didn’t have much time left. Guan Miao and the others were about to come find Tan Yan for class, and Guan Su Lin would also seek her out after their conversation. Opportunities like this wouldn’t come easily.
Zheng Mengni exhaled deeply; her racing heart gradually calmed down as her body relaxed. She pushed the door open and locked it behind her with a soft click.
The sound echoed clearly in the dimly lit room. The space was much darker than the hallway; heavy blackout curtains were tightly drawn, completely blocking out any light from outside.
As Zheng Mengni entered, she widened her eyes and tried to adjust her vision in the darkness, cautiously searching for Tan Yan's figure.
She watched him enter. Zheng Mengni had no time to play hide and seek; she fumbled to turn on the light, revealing a tall, slender figure in her line of sight.
Tan Yan sat sideways on the edge of the bed, rising to his feet as he heard the movement. Following the sound, he moved forward aimlessly, his cane tapping against the floor.
From Zheng Mengni's perspective, every step Tan Yan took seemed to be heading straight for her. Remembering the short wine glass that had been at the table, she held her breath and instinctively extended her foot. The cane nearly poked her toes but inadvertently jabbed at the space behind her instead.
Unable to detect the obstacle, Tan Yan was caught off guard and stumbled over Zheng Mengni's foot. He lurched forward, his tall frame tipping dangerously as his knee struck the ground with a dull thud.
Zheng Mengni's expression froze for a moment. She blinked in confusion, instinctively covering her mouth to stifle any sound. What was happening? Had she miscalculated? This was bad!
