Guan Miao knocked on the door, where the physician was examining Tan Yan's eyes.
Tan Yan's expression was somewhat grim; he shook his head and said nothing, bowing his head in silence as he walked out of the bedroom.
Guan Miao mustered her courage and stepped forward. This was her first time approaching Tan Yan on her own, feeling both reverent and cautious.
There seemed to be an invisible barrier around Tan Yan, subtly keeping others at a distance, exuding an air of independence and otherworldliness. Yet, he was always just the right amount of gentle, his kind demeanor drawing people in and igniting a desire to get closer. However, once she did get close, she realized that an insurmountable chasm lay between them. What appeared to be near was, in reality, far away.
That morning, Guan Miao had been summoned to the study for a discussion. The reason was that Guan Yao had recently made significant progress in managing the family business and had received praise and admiration from Guan Li.
Guan Li, with his keen insight, quickly saw through the situation and determined that there must be a talented individual guiding them from behind the scenes. His gaze soon fixed on Tan Yan. Looking at the seemingly innocent tutor who was also blind, he never expected him to be so remarkable.
Guan Yao hurriedly informed Guan Li that Tan Yan's blindness was only temporary and that there would be a chance for recovery.
Guan Li understood his eldest son's intentions well and replied, "If that's the case, then make sure to seize this rare talent. No matter what means you use, you must win him over completely."
As he spoke, he turned his attention to Guan Miao and asked her, "Guan Miao, I heard that it was Tan Yan who helped you retrieve your bag from the robbers that day?"
"Yes," Guan Miao replied.
"And what do you think of him?"
Guan Miao felt her cheeks flush. "Tan Yan is a very good person."
"That's good to hear. Then you should spend more time with him and cultivate your feelings. If true feelings develop, I'll support your marriage."
Whether she liked him or not didn't matter much to Guan Li. The priority was to find a way to bind this young man to the Guan Family and inject fresh and vibrant blood into their lineage.
However, there was one flaw: Tan Yan was blind. Before any marriage could take place, his eyesight needed to be restored.
He didn't want outsiders to know that his most precious granddaughter had married a blind man; that would be a tremendous joke.
Guan Miao quietly observed Tan Yan's profile, recalling his earlier helplessness, and felt a tinge of bitterness in her heart. She crouched in front of him and comforted him, "Don't worry, your eyes will definitely get better."
Tan Yan nodded slightly, his expression gentle. "Thank you, but I'm a bit tired. Is it okay if I take a nap?"
Guan Miao quickly stood up. "Oh, okay! You should rest. I won't disturb you."
After she left, Tan Yan hesitated for a moment before rising and walking to the full-length mirror.
Staring at the person in the mirror, he suddenly smiled. He reached out with his fingertip and tapped the glass surface. His clear eyes once again became hollow and vacant.
Pretending to be blind was not easy; deceiving ordinary people was one thing. But the members of the Guan Family were no simpletons. To keep them in the dark about his recovery, he would need to practice more.
Tan Yan stood before the mirror, seriously analyzing the changes in his gaze, searching for the most realistic and fitting moments. His vacant eyes lost focus in an instant, and no matter how hard he tried, the light could not converge at the center.
Wearing blindfold sunglasses made it difficult to discern truth from illusion.
Tan Yan had recovered two days ago. Aside from himself, only the doctor responsible for his examination knew about it.
The doctor had been persuaded through threats and inducements, slowly breaking down his defenses, allowing Tan Yan to keep quiet for now. To conceal the truth completely, he needed to find a way to eliminate any potential exposure.
Guan Miao was simple-minded and could not hide her thoughts well. Therefore, Tan Yan quickly deduced what would happen next.
To gain Guan Yao's trust, he showed no restraint and revealed his sharpness; it was only a matter of time before he attracted attention.
He was an outsider with no power or influence, relying solely on his intellect. Marrying into their family was the greatest gift he could receive.
During the medical examination, Guan Yao was present, knowing that it was only temporary and that he would recover sooner or later. Recovery meant that Tan Yan would no longer have any flaws. It meant he possessed enough qualifications to be the son-in-law of the prestigious Guan Family.
In fact, marrying into the Guan Family was currently the easiest path to take. Even if this path were to become even smoother, he still wouldn’t want it. Tan Yan was not a sentimental person; love occupied only the tiniest part of his life.
His fervent pursuit of someone could be seen not as a desire for love, but rather as a yearning for that special person who would make him see love in a different light.
