Zheng Mengni would not ask such a question without reason, especially since she had never seen Ye Bing as a child. The fact that she did ask indicated that she knew something.
Ye Siqian gradually calmed down; he could distinguish between what lies could be told and what could not. There had indeed been some changes.
Zheng Mengni's eyes curved gently, pure and innocent. "Just some?"
Ye Siqian's lips moved slightly, hesitating for just a moment before he replied with a soft "mm."
"But I heard that Ye Bing used to faint at the sight of blood. How did he grow up to be able to handle guns? And looking at those scars on him, he must have been in quite a few fights."
"How do you know he used to faint at the sight of blood?"
Seeing Ye Siqian's obvious surprise, Zheng Mengni immediately revealed a graceful and gentle smile.
"I'm just curious, so I did some research."
Zheng Mengni lightly tapped the armrest of the sofa, looking down at Ye Siqian. She found his changing expressions quite amusing, so she softly reassured him, "Don't be nervous; I'm just asking."
Ye Siqian's face flushed. "I'm not nervous; I'm just curious about how you know all this."
Zheng Mengni replied nonchalantly, "I learned about my background a long time ago. I couldn't help it; I was scared. So I spent a lot of time investigating the child who was swapped. I was curious about his past life; I needed to prepare myself psychologically because I really didn't want to suffer."
"You won't suffer; no one will let you suffer." Ye Siqian's tone was urgent and incredibly certain.
Zheng Mengni recalled something and a hint of intriguing amusement appeared on her delicate face, as if silently questioning Ye Siqian: Are you sure?
However, Zheng Mengni did not directly confront Ye Siqian about his past misdeeds against her; after all, one must leave some room for maneuvering in life.
With Ye Bing's passing, the only person left in this world who was closest to him was Ye Siqian. To investigate the truth behind his poisoning, she had to start with Ye Siqian.
Yet, it seemed that this brother, Ye Bing, did not care much about him.
The person was dead; it was unreasonable that no one asked about it.
Ye Siqian was guarded and clever. He either changed the subject or gave answers that didn’t address her questions directly. It was pointless to keep going around in circles with him. She decided to keep him close and take her time with the investigation.
Zheng Mengni planned to send Ye Siqian to Wei Jingxi's apartment. Wei Jingxi was abroad and it was uncertain when he would return; leaving so many luxurious homes unoccupied felt wasteful.
Before leaving, Wei Jingxi had given all his keys to Zheng Mengni, telling her to use them as she pleased.
Even so, out of courtesy, Zheng Mengni first called Wei Jingxi to consult him. Until their relationship was confirmed, she couldn’t casually use someone else's belongings.
At that moment, Wei Jingxi, who had just finished class, was so excited by the long-distance call that he felt like crying. He had been thinking about Zheng Mengni to the point of madness during this time.
However, he hadn't made any remarkable achievements yet and felt he had no right to disturb her with a call. Even on her birthday, he had only quietly sent a gift back, using his own hard-earned money—money that was completely his own.
He should have felt a sense of accomplishment, but Wei Jingxi couldn't find happiness in it. The gift wasn't expensive and was hardly impressive; he didn't even dare to leave his name on it.
Secretly, he played the role of one of Zheng Mengni's admirers, hoping she would misunderstand the gift as something from someone else lacking taste and discernment, while also wishing she would know it was prepared with the money he had worked so hard to earn.
After much inner turmoil, he ultimately didn't dare to make the call. Yet today, unexpectedly, Xiao Ni reached out to him first.
Wei Jingxi struggled to contain his joy, trying his best to keep his voice steady and not let his excitement show. He asked, "Xiao Ni, is there something you need from me?"
"Yes," Zheng Mengni replied softly. "I have a younger brother coming to the city, and it's not convenient for him to stay at my place. I thought since you have an unused apartment, I was wondering if he could stay there for a while."
