On the eve of her birthday, Zheng Mengni achieved an unprecedented accomplishment, which she considered the most satisfying birthday gift she could give herself. Remembering the strange voice that had told her she would be kicked out of her home on her nineteenth birthday, it now seemed nothing more than a joke.
Since Ye Bingran was sent away, Sun Yao had been feeling low. However, with another daughter's birthday approaching, she hid her sadness behind a forced smile and arranged a grand banquet for Zheng Mengni. November 9th fell on a Saturday, and the dinner was held at the Zheng Family Villa, inviting nearly half of the city's social elite.
Zheng Mengni wore a custom-made strapless gown, her stylist had styled her hair into elegant curls pinned up with clips, exposing her snow-white shoulders and beautifully defined collarbones that seemed to flutter like wings. The weather was cold, and Sun Yao draped a white mink shawl over Zheng Mengni's shoulders, wrapping her slender frame snugly.
"Go have fun, but make sure to keep warm," Sun Yao advised.
Zheng Mengni squeezed her hand gently. "Mom, let’s go visit Xiao Ran together tomorrow."
Sun Yao turned her face away, her voice trembling. "Every time I see him, I’m terrified of how weak he’s becoming. But no doctor can help; I’ve even searched abroad, and there’s nothing they can do."
Zheng Mengni stepped forward and embraced her mother, softly comforting her. "He’ll be okay; Xiao Ran has always been a strong person."
Sun Yao sniffled. "I’m sorry for crying on your birthday."
Zheng Mengni's soft voice carried a hint of pain. "It’s alright; cry if you need to. Share my sadness too. Even though Xiao Ran isn’t here right now, he can definitely feel our concern."
After soothing Sun Yao, Zheng Mengni tidied her hair and walked gracefully across the smooth marble floor in her diamond-studded high heels, slowly stepping into the sight of the guests.
Standing beside Zheng Yicheng, she maintained a standard smile and politely greeted the guests. As Zheng Yicheng introduced her, she focused intently on their eyes, silently noting their influential identities to prepare herself for the future.
Regardless of whether they possessed deep connections or not, Zheng Mengni treated everyone with sincerity. Some people might seem unrelated to benefits now, but who could say what the future held?
With gentle brows and a serene smile, Zheng Mengni completed her rounds. Holding a glass of champagne, she stepped onto the balcony and gazed outward as vibrant fireworks burst forth in the night sky—a breathtaking display.
Suddenly reminded of the grand fireworks show Wei Jingxi had put on for her during his proposal months ago, Zheng Mengni paused momentarily.
Before leaving, Wei Jingxi had promised to call her every day; recently he had been too busy and had forgotten.
But Zheng Mengni felt no guilt at all. After all, he hadn’t hit her. This only proved that he was living well, and with that thought, Zheng Mengni felt an immense sense of relief.
She turned to head back to the hall when she noticed a distinguished man standing by the door. He was dressed in a sharp suit, one of the few who could pull off such vibrant colors, making his complexion appear even fairer and his features more refined. He had a face that was hard to forget, compelling one to remember his name: Guan Su Lin.
Zheng Mengni nodded slightly, a polite greeting.
“I’ve been looking for you for a long time, Miss Zheng,” Guan Su Lin said, his smooth voice drifting gently in the night breeze as he approached with a smile.
As he drew closer, Zheng Mengni didn’t have time to ponder the meaning of his words before she saw Guan Su Lin present a brocade box to her. “Xiao Wei is not in the country and couldn’t attend your birthday party. This is a gift he asked me to prepare for you. Happy birthday, Miss Zheng.”
Zheng Mengni did not reach out to take it and politely replied, “He hasn’t mentioned this to me.”
“A gift should certainly retain some surprise,” Guan Su Lin said, his hand still hovering in the air without any intention of withdrawing it. He maintained a gentle and harmless smile, his deep-set eyes fixed on her pale cheeks as if drawing her into an innocent whirlpool.
Such captivating eyes possessed an irresistible power over anyone, yet Zheng Mengni remained unmoved. She had always felt that Wei Jingxi’s involvement in Luo Xuezhi’s miscarriage was quite suspicious. The Luo family held a high status; they were not people one could easily approach. It was unlikely for someone about to become a mother to be so careless.
“Sorry, I forgot that you and Xiao Wei…” Guan Su Lin finally withdrew his hand, a hint of guilt in his tone as he continued, “Although it was Xiao Wei’s repeated request, I didn’t consider your feelings and made things difficult for you.”
As he spoke, Guan Su Lin unexpectedly pulled out another even more exquisite brocade box from somewhere. With a smile in his eyes, he said, “This one is my gift. I wonder if I might have the honor of being friends with Miss Zheng.”
Zheng Mengni accepted it with pleasure, lowering her head slightly to gaze at the brocade box resting in her palm, her thick lashes casting shadows over her darkened eyes.
After a moment, she reached out with her delicate hand to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear and smiled gently. “Of course, I would be honored.”
Though she didn’t know what intentions Guan Su Lin had in approaching her, the truth behind Luo Xuezhi’s miscarriage truly intrigued her. After all, Guan Su Lin was blood-related to Luo Xuezhi.
Perhaps there is some hidden truth behind it, and he might understand it as well.
"Should we take a look?" Guan Su Lin continued to gaze intently at her. "If you don't like it, there's still time to change it. Otherwise, once your birthday is over, sending a gift later won’t hold the same meaning as today."
Zheng Mengni responded with a smile and a gentle nod. "Alright."
Guan Su Lin focused on the smile at the corners of her lips, his gaze deep and enigmatic, the thin line of his lips curving into a beautiful arc.
The sky was ablaze with fireworks, casting bright and dazzling light down, but on his snow-white face, it appeared somewhat dim and obscure.
Just as he was about to open the ornate box, Zheng Mengni's phone rang.
When she answered, it was Zheng Zeqi's anxious voice on the other end.
"It's bad news, Xiao Ni. The clinic just informed me that Xiao Ran's heartbeat stopped three minutes ago."
Zheng Mengni's face turned pale as she hastily shoved the troublesome box back into Guan Su Lin's arms.
She whispered an apology before turning and leaving in a hurry.
