Ye Bing took a long moment to catch his breath. He grabbed his phone and began to type.
"Will you believe what I say?"
Zheng Mengni lifted his chin and lowered her voice, "You tell me first, and then I’ll consider whether to believe you."
Ye Bing pressed his lips together. "Forget it."
He hadn’t planned on revealing the truth to Zheng Mengni anyway. How could he tell her that Tan Yan had tried to kill him twice and poisoned him once just to protect her identity? Ye Bing didn’t want Zheng Mengni to feel any psychological burden, even though this matter had nothing to do with her from beginning to end. However, Tan Yan's intentions were for Zheng Mengni's sake, and that alone would bring her indelible harm.
After all, he was tough enough to withstand it; there was no need to drag Zheng Mengni into this.
Zheng Mengni leaned closer, adjusting Ye Bing's face to meet her gaze, her eyes serious. "So you do know who poisoned you."
Ye Bing replied earnestly, "I really don’t know."
He absentmindedly muttered to himself, "It could have been in the food I ate, or in the tea I drank... or maybe..."
Ye Bing's expression sharpened. The food and tea couldn’t be the source; he had shared meals with the Zheng family every day. That night at the club, he hadn’t touched any of Wu Hao’s food either.
The time between those two incidents was when he had been unconscious in the hospital. That was when he was at his most vulnerable, unable to defend himself. He had relied solely on Nutritional Solution to sustain his life.
Nutritional Solution...
Ye Bing began to piece together the sequence of events. In that fleeting moment, Zheng Mengni continued to tilt her head, observing Ye Bing’s expression intently, trying to find something strange or suspicious.
Noticing her gaze, Ye Bing turned slightly and offered her a weak smile before asking blankly, "Is there something on my face?"
"Please lift your face and come closer," Ye Bing said obediently. "Could you help me get rid of it?"
"It can't be removed," Zheng Mengni replied mysteriously. As she spoke, she pushed Ye Bing's face again. "Because you have the word 'fool' on your face, it's already become part of you. How can I get it out?"
Zheng Mengni was no longer beating around the bush when she insulted him.
Ye Bing maintained his composure and said, "But I really don't know who poisoned me."
"That's exactly why you're a fool."
Outside the operating room, Wei Nanxuan wore an expression of lingering anger. He paced back and forth, his steps growing heavier with each pass.
Wei Jingxi sat on a bench with his legs spread apart, his head lowered, his gaze somewhat vacant.
Guan Su Lin arrived late, loosening a button with one hand and slightly out of breath, seemingly still trying to grasp the situation. "How did this happen? She was perfectly fine before she fell."
Wei Jingxi felt a sharp pain in his brow as he sensed Wei Nanxuan's cold, piercing gaze directed at him from the front. It was sharp and chilling, like an invisible hand gripping his heart tightly.
"You explain yourself." This was the utmost calm Wei Nanxuan could muster.
Yet this light remark shattered all of Wei Jingxi's hopes.
"I did push her away, but she was the one who held onto me first," he recalled, focusing on that detail alone. Even now, he found himself distracted by thoughts of Zheng Mengni's family—wondering how she was doing and if her family had resolved their issues. The only thing that could pull his attention back to Luo Xuezhi was when Wei Nanxuan called his name.
"Why did you push her?" Wei Nanxuan asked sharply. "You do know she's pregnant, right?"
"Then why didn’t you ask her why she didn’t come to me for trouble?" Wei Jingxi shot back, unwilling to take any blame. This situation was entirely Luo Xuezhi's own doing.
"Because of you, she's now lying in the operating room! How can you still say such things? Have you no conscience?" Wei Nanxuan's face was filled with rage, his brows furrowed tightly as he stood up abruptly, ready to slap Wei Jingxi.
Seeing this, Guan Su Lin hurriedly stepped forward to intervene. "You can't blame him for this situation."
Wei Nanxuan retorted angrily, "If not him, then who can we blame?"
Wei Jingxi sneered coldly, "Whoever couldn't stand firm is to blame."
Wei Nanxuan was seething with anger. "Listen to yourself, does this beast even speak like a human?"
Wei Jingxi's eyes were cold, revealing no hint of escape. "There are cameras at home. You won't check if I pushed her on purpose?"
Guan Su Lin spoke earnestly, "Perhaps it really was Luo Xuezhi who lost her balance; after all, she is pregnant and not as agile as others."
"Enough! Don't try to excuse this brat. No matter what, he is involved in this," Wei Nanxuan snapped.
Wei Jingxi remained unfazed, a smile playing on his lips that was difficult to decipher. "Planning to help that woman scam me for medical expenses, huh? Go ahead, give me your quote. Whatever you can think of—mental distress fees, lost wages, nursing fees, accommodation costs—count it all on my head. If you can't figure it out, I can hire a lawyer to sort it out slowly; I'll cover the lawyer's fees."
Wei Nanxuan was furious, his chest heaving violently. "You scoundrel!"
"Rest assured, I won't shortchange you on what you deserve. And stop using that woman as an excuse to bother me; I've already given her face by not blaming her for delaying me," Wei Jingxi finished and turned away without giving Wei Nanxuan a chance to stop him.
Guan Su Lin instinctively chased after him but deliberately slowed his pace so as not to draw too much attention.
Behind them, Wei Nanxuan shouted, "Don't mind him!"
Wei Jingxi continued walking without pausing, while Guan Su Lin hesitated for a moment before turning back outside the operating room.
He reached out and lightly patted Wei Nanxuan's shoulder in an attempt to comfort him. "Don't be too anxious; if we really get into it, none of them are at fault."
Wei Nanxuan felt a throbbing pain in his temples and couldn't absorb a single word.
Time seemed to stretch endlessly until the lights in the operating room finally went out.
In that moment, Wei Nanxuan's heart dropped; he opened his mouth but didn't dare take a step forward.
But what was meant to come could not be stopped. The doctor regretfully informed him that Luo Xuezhi's child could not be saved.
The surroundings fell into an immediate silence, devoid of any sound. Wei Nanxuan felt as if he had plunged into an ice cavern, his blood freezing in his veins.
He closed his eyes, feeling warm liquid welling up in his gaze.
Behind him, Guan Su Lin felt weak and unsteady; his face turned pale and cold in an instant.
A buzzing sound echoed in his mind as his heart trembled slightly.
As he turned his face away, Guan Su Lin pinched the bridge of his nose. His thin hand covered the lower half of his clearly defined face, and the fleeting curve at the corner of his mouth was too vague to discern whether it was an upward or downward turn.
