Because Guan Su Lin was doing so well, the prospect of his uncle's country seemed distant. Luo Xuezhi felt a genuine unease around him; after a brief greeting, she intended to head downstairs to empty her cup. Guan Su Lin stood in a rather strategic position and easily stepped forward to block her path.
"Why do you run away every time you see me? Am I that frightening?" He said this with an air of curiosity, playfully touching the dough in front of him, his smile warm and inviting.
Luo Xuezhi lowered her head. "You’re busy, I wouldn’t dare disturb you."
He was indeed busy, but could still spare a little time. Luo Xuezhi remained silent, lips pressed together.
Guan Su Lin observed her haggard face and couldn’t help but sigh. "You look much older than you did a few months ago. Haven't you thought about continuing to live a life free from worries?"
Luo Xuezhi's expression turned cold. "If my uncle is here to persuade me, there's no need. I’m married now; there’s no reason for me to stay at my parental home."
Guan Su Lin feigned a look of grievance. "I didn’t mean it that way; I’m just concerned for you."
His casual probing only heightened Luo Xuezhi's wariness. Guan Su Lin didn’t want her to stay out of fear that she might hinder his domestic ambitions. For the sake of power, he was likely capable of anything.
"I have nothing worth worrying about." Her words effectively silenced all of Guan Su Lin's thoughts.
Yet, Guan Su Lin was not one to be easily led by her words. He furrowed his brow, seemingly puzzled. "But I heard that Wei Nanxuan has already begun arranging positions for Wei Jingxi. Didn’t they say he wasn’t interested in business? It seems like just a ruse to put your mind at ease."
Luo Xuezhi replied coldly, "What should I be at ease about?"
Guan Su Lin casually glanced at her. "Your niece is already five months along, right? By the time she arrives, who knows how much it will take to catch up with her brother? Not to mention her brother has their father paving the way for him."
Luo Xuezhi felt her composure slipping. "What exactly do you mean?"
"Nothing much," he said innocently, spreading his hands.
Suddenly, Guan Su Lin revealed a strange and chilling smile, speaking softly, "I just wanted to give you a heads-up. My elder brother definitely won’t be able to manage the country. If you’re counting on him, it’s better to count on me instead. I’ve always been kind-hearted since I was young, and you’re still my niece; no matter what, I will certainly help family over justice."
The concepts of kindness and favoritism could never truly be reconciled, yet Guan Su Lin wore an air of righteous conviction as he spoke.
Luo Xuezhi felt a flicker of doubt in her heart, even though she didn't speak. She had always been skeptical about familial ties, believing that if there were any connections, they would be based on mutual interests.
Guan Su Lin reined in her smile. "Alright, I'm not joking anymore. I actually need your child to help me."
Wei Jingxi interjected, "No matter how well you can control things, it still doesn't change the fact that there's no blood relation between us. But your child is different."
Instinctively, Luo Xuezhi protected her belly, her eyes filled with wariness.
Guan Su Lin continued calmly, "Over the past few months, I've assessed the situation. The development prospects in the country are indeed quite promising. I plan to stay here for a long time—possibly ten years or even several decades. The Wanxie Consortium is a valuable piece on the chessboard, and I need it to be in the hands of someone I trust."
Luo Xuezhi's eyes widened in surprise. "You... what do you mean?"
Guan Su Lin replied with a slight nod, "I mean helping you rise to power and seize shares."
