On Friday night, at the Wei Family residence, the living room was brightly lit but eerily silent when Wei Jingxi walked in. He closed the door behind him, and the servant had already placed his slippers neatly in front of him.
As he passed through the hallway into the living room, he found Wei Nanxuan sitting on the sofa, distractedly looking at his phone. His face was ashen, and when he glanced up to coldly survey his wayward son, he quickly lowered his gaze again.
To Wei Nanxuan's right, Luo Xuezhi was intently trimming her nails. Despite wearing a loose dress, her noticeably rounded belly could not be hidden. She didn’t even glance at Wei Jingxi, a faint smile playing on her lips as if she were eagerly awaiting a show.
On the second floor, Guan Su Lin leaned sleepily against the railing, lowering his gaze to observe Wei Jingxi. "Xiao Wei is back! School must have been tiring. Uncle Grandfather is treating you to a nice meal tonight."
As he spoke, he ambled down the stairs, seemingly oblivious to the tense atmosphere in the house, as if he knew nothing of the underlying issues.
Wei Jingxi had no intention of engaging with him and shuffled towards the stairs in his slippers. His indifference completely infuriated Wei Nanxuan, who had endured a week of frustration and could no longer hold back. Gritting his teeth, he shouted, "Can’t you hear when an elder is speaking to you?"
"What elder? When did you speak to me?" Wei Jingxi shot back at Wei Nanxuan with a particularly frosty glare.
Finally making his way into the living room, Guan Su Lin attempted to mediate. "Alright now, why speak so harshly to the child? If there’s something to discuss, let’s do it calmly. We’re all family; let’s not lose our temper."
Wei Nanxuan's face turned a deep shade of anger as he retorted, "Speak calmly? How can I speak calmly with him? He’s hanging out with all the wrong crowd! Engaging in such reckless behavior!"
Wei Jingxi’s eyes were as still as dead water; he sneered in response, "Am I using drugs?"
"What about your so-called friends? Aren't they doing drugs?"
"What friends? When have I ever lowered myself to associate with that kind of people?"
"If they’re not your friends, then why were you on that boat? Just hanging around for fun?"
"You think I need your permission to go on my own family's boat? You can't even manage your own people and let this scandal happen—what does that have to do with me?"
Wei Nanxuan's face flushed with rage. "What do you mean it has nothing to do with you? What nonsense are you spouting?"
The father and son were locked in a heated argument when Guan Su Lin saw an opportunity and stepped in calmly to defuse the situation. "You’re misunderstanding Xiao Wei here; didn’t the police check everything? The pills found that night weren’t drugs; they just mimic the effects of drugs and can induce extreme excitement. Look, after some criticism and education from the police officers, they released everyone."
Wei Nanxuan was not willing to listen to outsiders; his sole focus was on steering his eldest son onto the right path. "You can’t just take any pills; who knows what you might try next! What’s the point of hanging around with such people all day?"
After a long silence, Wei Jingxi finally reined in his temper and spoke unexpectedly calmly. "I’m not hanging out with anyone now, nor will I in the future."
Wei Nanxuan was even more surprised; he had prepared himself for a heated argument with this rebellious son, but unexpectedly, Wei Jingxi chose to speak calmly instead. With the opportunity given, both sides took a step back. Wei Nanxuan took a sip of the now cold tea, and his anger gradually subsided.
Wei Jingxi, hands in his pockets, turned and headed upstairs. Luo Xuezhi, who had been unable to interject throughout the conversation, wore a somewhat stiff expression. In her memory, Wei Jingxi had always been a defiant troublemaker whom Wei Nanxuan couldn't control; after scolding him, he would simply indulge him further.
Perhaps due to her pregnancy, Luo Xuezhi's emotions were more sensitive than usual. She worried that before their child grew up, Wei Nanxuan would hand over the company to Wei Jingxi. Although Wei Jingxi pretended to be uninterested in business, his personality would never allow outsiders to take what rightfully belonged to him.
Months passed, and her brother-in-law remained stuck abroad, unable to return. If Wei Nanxuan didn't wholeheartedly support her, she would be left isolated and helpless.
