As Zheng Mengni turned to close the door, a flicker of annoyance crossed her eyes. She really didn’t want to spend the night with Ye Bing. However, Sun Yao had seen them sharing a bed and assumed that she was particularly concerned about her sister, so she decided to come and keep Ye Bing company at night.
Their mother, worried about Zheng Mengni's well-being and fearing that she might not sleep well, had decided to personally accompany Ye Bing. But Zheng Mengni wouldn’t allow such a situation to unfold; their mother could only sleep with her, not with her other sister. So, she pretended to be obedient, claiming that she really liked Ye Bing and was concerned about her health, insisting that she needed to stay by her side to feel at ease.
Sun Yao couldn't argue with Zheng Mengni and eventually let her go. Turning to look at Ye Bing's tear-streaked face, Zheng Mengni felt truly irritated. What a spoiled little girl, still needing their mother’s company at this age. She was determined not to let Ye Bing sleep peacefully.
As soon as she climbed onto the bed, Zheng Mengni opened the most popular shooting game on her phone, cranked up the volume to the maximum, and sat beside Ye Bing playing without headphones. This game was one she had downloaded during her relationship with Wei Jingxi. He had traded five trendy bags for her promise to play with him.
Zheng Mengni found it boring and thought reading books was far more enjoyable. So after downloading it and registering an account, she had only played one round with Wei Jingxi and never touched it again. She never expected that after all this time, it would come in handy.
After watching for a while, Ye Bing curiously asked, “Can you hear footsteps clearly without headphones?”
Zheng Mengni feigned a pitiful expression and replied, “Why should I wear them? This room isn’t just yours.”
“Okay,” Ye Bing said.
The next second, Zheng Mengni’s screen went black. Ye Bing innocently averted his gaze.
Zheng Mengni widened her eyes in frustration and accused him, “It’s all your fault for distracting me; I got ambushed because of you!”
Ye Bing rubbed his ears and said, “Ah, sorry, sorry.”
Ignoring him, Zheng Mengni started another round.
Zheng Mengni had a very regular routine, but tonight she decided to break the rules and stay up until two or three in the morning before turning off the lights. If she wasn’t going to sleep, then Ye Bing wouldn’t either.
However, it didn’t take long for Zheng Mengni to grow bored. She didn’t enjoy playing games; she always ended up losing and found it tedious. So, she switched to watching a drama instead. Just as she was getting engrossed in it, Ye Bing leaned over, resting his head beside her, equally captivated by the show.
Zheng Mengni shifted away slightly, pressing her phone against her stomach to block his view. "Why do you need to look at mine when you have your own phone?"
Ye Bing replied earnestly, "Because yours is more interesting."
It was all just a phone; there was no real difference. Zheng Mengni simply didn’t want him to see it. At that moment, her phone vibrated against her stomach, ringing with a clear tone. She picked it up and saw that it was a video call from Wei Jingxi.
Perfect timing.
Before answering, Zheng Mengni made a gesture for silence: "Be quiet."
Ye Bing smirked and mimicked her gesture: "Okay."
Zheng Mengni propped the phone on her knees and greeted the boy on the screen with a bright smile. Wei Jingxi looked stunned for a moment, flustered as he scratched his head and quickly adjusted his posture at the desk, sitting up straight.
The warm light from the floor lamp cast a glow behind him, half of his pale face falling into shadow. He shifted slightly in his chair, presenting his full handsome face—lips red and teeth white—to the camera.
"Xiao Ni, what’s up?"
"Nothing, just missed you."
He actually wanted to say, "Could you not smile so beautifully? It makes my heart race and I feel like something bad is about to happen."
Wei Jingxi was more accustomed to seeing Zheng Mengni with a serious expression; at least then he could read her emotions clearly—whether she was happy or upset.
"Let’s hang out tomorrow," he suggested.
Zheng Mengni tilted her head slightly, her gaze drifting to Ye Bing’s quiet profile. He lay on the bed with little interest, neither playing on his phone nor sleeping, his eyes staring blankly into space.
Wei Jingxi bit his lip in silence, watching Zheng Mengni as she turned away. The moment she did so, he guessed that someone was in her bed.
Unconsciously, her heart ached.
But then she realized she was in her own home, and Wei Jingxi's anxious heart finally settled down.
Zheng Mengni cheerfully responded, "Sure, have you arranged everything?"
"Everything's set," he replied.
Zheng Mengni then asked him about the time, location, and specific activities planned.
Noticing that Zheng Mengni was much more enthusiastic than usual, Wei Jingxi couldn't help but smile widely; no matter how hard he tried to suppress it, he just couldn't.
Maybe they could get back together.
If he put in a little more effort and performed well, Xiao Ni no longer seemed to dislike him.
Lost in his beautiful fantasies, once he started talking, he couldn't stop.
In truth, Zheng Mengni didn't pay much attention to what he was saying; she either nodded or responded with casual affirmations like "uh-huh" or "okay."
Her expression was particularly focused, her watery eyes sparkling with a gentle smile that made it impossible for anyone to feel she was being dismissive—especially not Wei Jingxi, who viewed her through a thick lens of affection.
Suddenly, his gaze caught a glimpse of Ye Bing beside him, sleeping peacefully as if already lost in dreams, unaffected by their conversation.
Feeling that the plan had fallen flat, Zheng Mengni abruptly interrupted Wei Jingxi's excitement.
"It’s getting late; we should go to sleep."
Wei Jingxi bit his lip and murmured, "Well... okay then."
Before he could finish his last word, the call had already ended.
Looking at the unusually long duration of their call, he silently took a screenshot and unconsciously smiled to himself.
On the other end, Zheng Mengni was too tired to continue and turned off the lights to sleep.
She vowed never to use such self-sabotaging tactics again; next time, she would find a way to make Ye Bing sleep on the floor willingly.
Just as she might have dozed off, a dull thud startled her awake.
She blinked in confusion and reached back to feel around.
What an idiot—how did he fall off the bed again?
