During the hospitalization, Zheng Mengni visited Ye Bing in the intensive care unit three times. His vital signs were weak, and the doctors had done everything they could. Half a month later, Ye Bing was transferred from the ICU to a regular ward, surviving on nutritional solutions and an oxygen mask. Whether he would wake up again was left to fate.
He was growing increasingly thin, his once sun-kissed skin now pale and ghostly. Ye Bing looked so haggard that it seemed he could vanish at any moment. If Sun Yao had initially intended to keep the paternity test a secret, witnessing Ye Bing's near-death state made it impossible for her to maintain her composure; how could she face the potential loss of her child without feeling anything?
Sun Yao said nothing, but after falling ill herself, she had lost weight drastically. Zheng Mengni urged her to rest well, assuring her that she would take care of Ye Bing. Zheng Zeqi wanted to stay behind out of concern for her, but Zheng Mengni insisted that he go and take care of their mother instead. She smiled and said, "Mom used to be stronger than me, so I was the one who needed care. But now Xiao Ni seems to be stronger than Mom; you should take care of her."
Sun Yao left in tears, utterly exhausted as Zheng Zeqi led her away. Before they departed, Zheng Mengni pretended not to know anything and softly said, "Mom has always been a crybaby. Xiao Ni is my best friend; I haven't shed a tear myself, so Mom has cried for me instead. I feel so guilty about that."
Zheng Zeqi gave her a deep look and gently stroked her head with his broad hand. "Xiao Ni, you need to be strong; don’t make us worry anymore."
Zheng Mengni threw herself into Zheng Zeqi's embrace, clutching his shirt tightly as she nodded vigorously. "I understand. I'm sorry, brother."
The days spent accompanying Ye Bing were truly dull, especially when caring for someone with whom she had little connection. Aside from Zheng Mengni, no one had witnessed the devastation of that explosion firsthand. She had just stepped out of the club when it happened—Ye Bing was caught at the epicenter and had no chance of escape. The fact that he still had a breath left to lie there was nothing short of a miracle.
Such dark thoughts felt somewhat immoral, yet Zheng Mengni genuinely doubted he would wake up again. She didn’t know how many days had passed since she started keeping vigil by his side; she sat by the bed, staring intently at Ye Bing.
He had become so emaciated that he was hardly recognizable, with a new, hideous scar marring his face. As a girl, he truly did not take care of his appearance. His skin, pale to the point of translucence due to weakness, showed no signs of revival. Just looking at his face was distressing.
Zheng Mengni could hardly imagine how many unknown and terrifying scars lay hidden beneath the hospital gown. He must be in pain; living like this was worse than being dead.
In a moment of impulse, Zheng Mengni reached out her hand, hovering over Ye Bing's face. She wanted to remove his oxygen mask, but she had no right to decide someone else's life or death. Perhaps enduring this pain was a choice made by Ye Bing himself.
Zheng Mengni withdrew her hand and turned her gaze away. She took out the study materials she had just purchased and began to read. She didn’t waste a single second. After finishing a set of problems, she blinked in surprise.
She bit her pen, feeling dazed. How strange it felt! Why did everything seem different from before? Today, solving problems was unusually smooth. It was as if the knowledge that had been blocked from her mind suddenly flooded in all at once. Normally, she would need to read explanations ten times just to grasp them vaguely, but just now she had understood everything after only four or five readings.
It was as if her hands were on fire with inspiration. Zheng Mengni didn’t dare waste any time; since her mind was working faster than usual, she had to seize the opportunity. After all, once this chance passed, it might never come again.
From dawn until dusk, she immersed herself in her studies, diligently working through problem after problem.
There has never been a time like this, where everything went smoothly without any hiccups. Zheng Mengni suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to cry.
