She had actually been awake for a while, bound and gagged outside a pitch-black door. Behind her were the group that had just kidnapped her, silent as the grave, making the voices from within the door all the more distinct.
After listening for a while, she realized something terrifying: Ye Bingran was not the mastermind behind her abduction; she was trapped in a perilous situation. It had taken several hours to drive here yesterday, and by the time Zheng Zeqi arrived, the body would probably be cold.
Zheng Mengni dared not make a sound, holding her breath as she peered through the crack of the door, quietly observing Ye Bingran's calm and composed face. Ye Bingran smiled gently, like a warm spring breeze. "Have you had enough beating, hmm?"
"Now it's my turn to teach you what a woman like me—without background, parents, or status—needs to rely on to make a name for herself in this world."
This type of wild horse that could never be tamed was precisely what Wu Hao was most infatuated with; he seemed to be quite intrigued. "What do you think it is?"
Ye Bingran picked up the freshly poured tea, swirling it leisurely before suddenly splashing it all over Wu Hao's face. The scalding liquid hit his eyes, and he grimaced in pain, reaching out to grab Ye Bingran by the neck.
His hand barely reached halfway when an overwhelming force seized him, the sound of dislocated bones echoing chillingly in the air.
"You’re looking for death," he managed to utter half-heartedly before feeling the cold barrel of a gun pressed against his throat. Wu Hao hadn’t even seen Ye Bingran’s movement; his own gun at his waist had been stealthily taken from him without him noticing.
Tea splashed, bones broke, and guns were seized—all in one swift motion.
With the upper hand, Ye Bingran stepped closer and whispered into Wu Hao's ear in a tone only they could hear: "The girl outside is my guest. You’ve already broken the rules by allowing harm to come to an innocent."
Zheng Mengni stood frozen in shock, goosebumps crawling all over her body. It wasn’t fear; it was a whirlwind of complex emotions that left her feeling dizzy.
Jealousy?
She had always envied those who were powerful—whether it was Tan Yan or Ye Bingran.
They seemed to accomplish everything effortlessly, easily obtaining the results she desperately sought. However, this feeling of jealousy had quietly transformed into envy over time. She truly envied them, envied the level of achievement that seemed unattainable no matter how hard she tried. The envy had driven her nearly mad. She wished so much to be one of those people. Why couldn't she be the one who shone brightly?
Perhaps it was due to the excessive amount of sedative she had taken, but Zheng Mengni felt every nerve in her head being torn apart, causing her pain that made it hard to breathe. The world around her began to blur, and she shook her head vigorously, fighting to stay conscious. To faint in such a dangerous place would be akin to willingly throwing herself into the jaws of a tiger.
Zheng Mengni gritted her teeth and held on, the metallic taste of blood forcing her to remain somewhat alert. Suddenly, someone grabbed her as if she were a small chick and lifted her up. Kicking open the door, she was carelessly thrown onto the ground.
Zheng Mengni looked up with her small face, her misty eyes reflecting Ye Bingran's vaguely shifting expression. The cold indifference in his pupils began to tremble gradually, and in their shared gaze, Zheng Mengni realized something. Her face turned pale as she pressed her lips together in silence. A gun was pointed at the back of her head, and she remained unusually calm.
Wu Hao sneered and said, "Whether I live or die, you two little girls are bound to meet your end."
System A Qi excitedly spoke in Ye Bingran's mind:
"This is a great opportunity for a backstab. You don't need to worry about an inconsequential side character; as long as she accidentally dies, I can ensure you leave here unscathed."
