Zheng Zeqi's eyes were as dark as night, with lashes gently lowered, lost in thought.
“Dad, she’s turning nineteen soon. She needs her own space and can’t always follow your orders or do things your way.”
Zheng Yicheng's expression turned cold. “I’m arranging the easiest path for her. Are you saying I’m trying to harm her?”
Zheng Zeqi countered with a question, “What do you think of Wei Jingxi’s path?” He didn’t want to provoke Zheng Yicheng; some things were better left unsaid. The more he spoke, the more it would backfire, not only failing to calm Zheng Yicheng’s anger but potentially bringing unnecessary trouble to Xiao Ni as well.
“Alright, don’t be too angry. I’ll find a way to talk to Xiao Ni,” he added.
Zheng Yicheng remained silent and left with a stern face.
Zheng Zeqi didn’t immediately seek out Zheng Mengni. He understood that even though they were siblings, there was an inherent difference between men and women. His sister had grown up; there were many things she probably wouldn’t feel comfortable discussing with him, but Sun Yao was different.
He called Sun Yao, urging her to come home as soon as possible. Then he instructed the kitchen to prepare some of Zheng Mengni’s favorite desserts and have them sent to her room.
In truth, Zheng Mengni didn’t take Zheng Yicheng’s words to heart. Instead of sulking alone, she preferred to use her time wisely—writing more problems, reading more pages, and drawing more pictures. Time should be spent on meaningful activities rather than wasted on useless emotions. Besides, she had already vented her feelings. For the next few months, she believed she could control herself and avoid going crazy.
Zheng Mengni sat quietly at her desk, eating pudding while engrossed in her book. She was so focused that she didn’t even hear Sun Yao knock on the door.
After a while, when there was still no response, Sun Yao grew concerned and gently pushed the door open.
“Ni Ni?”
“Sweetheart?”
Hearing her mother’s voice, Zheng Mengni looked up from her book. “Mom, when did you get here? Didn’t you say you were going to the hot springs with the ladies?”
Sun Yao smiled brightly. “I must have accidentally overheard my precious daughter saying she missed me, so I rushed over to give her a hug.”
Zheng Mengni leaped into her mother’s arms, tears brimming in her eyes. “You’re so cheesy, Mom! That’s just unfair.”
"Do you miss me?" Ni Ni asked softly, her voice tinged with a nasal tone.
"I miss you so much," she added.
Sun Yao held her close, gently stroking her head. "Did your dad forbid you from going out?"
Zheng Mengni pouted, "Yes. I went out for just a little while, and he got angry and scolded me."
"It's so unreasonable," Sun Yao said, feeling a pang of frustration in her chest. She disliked Zheng Yicheng's parenting style, believing that the most important thing was for children to be healthy and happy; everything else could wait.
Zheng Mengni deliberately asked in a whisper, "Am I being unreasonable?"
Tears glistened on her delicate cheeks, and Sun Yao felt her heart ache even more at the sight.
"Of course not! Xiao Ni can go wherever she wants to play. As long as I approve, it’s enough. You don’t have to listen to that old man," Sun Yao reassured her.
Zheng Mengni blinked her eyes. "Really?"
After a pause, she continued, "But I just want to stay by Mommy's side."
Sun Yao couldn't help but laugh through her tears. "You're so clingy! What will you do when you get married in the future?"
Zheng Mengni smiled shyly. "I won't marry anyone unless he’s willing to come live with me and take care of Mommy."
