Looking at the understated black luxury car in front of her, Zheng Mengni felt a bit surprised.
"I remember you used to dislike driving cars like this," she remarked.
Wei Jingxi was on the verge of tears. "You still remember my preferences."
Zheng Mengni smiled helplessly, her eyes curving into a beautiful arc. How could she forget? In the school parking lot, without even needing to check the license plate, the most expensive and ostentatious car would definitely be driven by Wei Jingxi.
It was rare for Wei Jingxi to take the initiative to open the back door, genuinely wanting to play the role of a driver for Zheng Mengni.
"I'll take a taxi," she politely declined.
She and Wei Jingxi were not headed in the same direction, and she didn’t want to owe him any favors; she didn’t want to create any entanglements with him.
Wei Jingxi insisted cautiously, "Xiao Ni, let me drive you. It’s uncomfortable sitting in a car outside."
"Thank you for your kindness. It may not be as luxurious as your car, but it’s not uncomfortable either."
Zheng Mengni didn’t want to elaborate further. Her grades were below standard; she simply didn’t have time for romance. And then there was Wei Jingxi—he was equally complicated.
He had promised her that he would come to school every day, and he kept that promise. However, on the day the grades were released, she happened to glance at Wei Jingxi's results. There was no improvement; in fact, he had done worse than during the time he hadn’t attended school.
With such poor grades, she couldn’t understand why Wei Jingxi was even thinking about dating.
Wei Jingxi had no idea what Zheng Mengni was thinking either. He fought against the urge to forcibly take her away and reminded himself that it wasn’t the right time yet; he didn’t want to provoke Xiao Ni’s aversion.
As long as he knew that her heart held neither him nor anyone else, that was enough.
Wei Jingxi clenched his hands at his sides and forced a smile. "Alright."
Zheng Mengni nodded and got into the car, rolling up the window. Her delicate and serene face blurred in Wei Jingxi's line of sight.
Zheng Mengni's unauthorized departure while being grounded made Zheng Yicheng extremely displeased. He would never allow his children to defy him.
While Zheng Yicheng lectured her, Zheng Mengni pretended to be deaf. She had only been out for a few hours during summer vacation, yet her father exploded with rage.
It's a lie to say she feels no grievance. She no longer wants to endure and pretend to be obedient as she did before; it’s completely thankless. Saying a hundred flattering words in front of Zheng Yicheng is not as effective as presenting an excellent result.
"Stop right there."
Zheng Mengni walked forward gracefully under Zheng Yicheng's furious gaze, her light steps exuding elegance and composure. It seemed as if she heard nothing, ignoring Zheng Yicheng's scolding and never once looking back.
Zheng Zeqi had just returned from the company and heard quite a commotion inside the house as soon as he entered the foyer. He declined the slippers offered by the maid and strode inside. His steady gaze first landed on Zheng Mengni's delicate figure before shifting to the grim-faced Zheng Yicheng.
He attempted to divert Zheng Yicheng's anger, calmly asking, "Isn't tonight supposed to be a family dinner?"
Zheng Yicheng's face darkened. "Your sister has become increasingly unruly lately. She's been getting close to that Wei kid; I don't know if she's been influenced by him, but now she dares to talk back to her elders."
Zheng Zeqi replied, "The engagement was your idea, and you wanted her to get close to Wei Jingxi. Why are you now criticizing Xiao Ni for it? Dad, she's just a girl; there's no need to be so strict."
Zheng Yicheng's expression turned even more severe. "Strict? If I weren't strict, she'd only retreat further. If she had even half of your cleverness, would I need to worry about her this much?"
Everyone has their own thoughts. She understands that you mean well for her, but perhaps a different approach would make it easier for Xiao Ni to accept.
"You don't discipline your sister but instead argue with me here. She ran out without saying a word; do you know where she went, who she met, or what she did?"
