Zheng Mengni bit her lip gently, her eyelashes fluttering as she hesitated for a long moment before finally saying, her face flushed, "I dislike you because your skills are lacking."
She left the latter part unspoken, deliberately inviting speculation.
As soon as the words left her lips, two gazes, one from the left and one from the right, fixed firmly on her face.
Tan Yan, despite his usual cold demeanor, felt a flush creeping up his cheeks upon hearing her accusation. His heart skipped a beat as he began to replay all the steps in his mind, pondering whether it was a timing issue or a hardware problem.
First of all, there was definitely no problem with the hardware.
Timing.
He glanced at Wei Jingxi, realizing that it was the interruption that had caused Xiao Ni's poor experience.
On the right side, Wei Jingxi, who was locked in Tan Yan's gaze, was already frozen in shock. Did she really think he was dead? Why would she say such things in front of him? Did Xiao Ni believe he was strong enough to be treated so casually?
Strength shouldn't be a reason to be hurt.
Besides, where was his strength? He felt utterly fragile.
When Wei Jingxi had crashed emotionally, Tan Yan quickly caught onto the flaw in his expression.
His face turned slightly awkward as he replied, "But I remember you disliked me long before that."
Oh right.
Zheng Mengni decided to sound even more aggrieved as she continued, "I meant your kissing skills. Last time you bit me without permission and it hurt; I dislike your rudeness. Forcing a kiss is truly uncouth."
"I'm sorry, Xiao Ni," Tan Yan stepped forward, wanting to explain.
He had no idea that she had disliked him since he confessed his feelings.
But at that moment, it was his first kiss with someone; naturally, he had been nervous and momentarily forgotten how much strength he had used.
If Xiao Ni found him annoying, perhaps it was because he had genuinely hurt her.
Wei Jingxi felt completely paralyzed by the situation.
He held back his frustration to the limit; the only thing he could control was not to lash out or curse.
He and Tan Yan had plenty of time ahead of them.
But when it came to winning back Xiao Ni's heart, this opportunity was singular and fleeting.
Wei Jingxi stepped forward decisively, positioning himself in front of Tan Yan.
The two of them were of similar height and build, but Wei Jingxi had used a little trick, wearing thicker soles to completely block Tan Yan's gaze, which seemed affectionate yet was actually nauseating.
Wei Jingxi had never spoken in such a gentle tone before, his voice carrying a hint of pleading. "Xiao Ni, it's getting late. Shall we leave?"
Zheng Mengni shivered slightly, a wave of discomfort washing over her. "Let's go," she said.
Tan Yan stood at the door, seemingly indifferent. "Would you like to have dinner together?"
"No, thank you," Zheng Mengni replied.
"Please step aside," Wei Jingxi said.
The two of them walked past Tan Yan, one in front of the other. As Zheng Mengni walked behind, she suddenly stopped and turned back, softly calling out, "Tan Yan."
Tan Yan involuntarily turned his head, his gaze darkening as he scrutinized Zheng Mengni's delicate, pale face. He pondered why she had called him, forcing himself not to think positively. He couldn't bear the thought of being hurt again and dared not hold any hopes.
What? Those complicated thoughts lingered in Tan Yan's mind for just a moment before he couldn't help but ask.
Zheng Mengni said, "Please return the Room Card I gave to Gao Lei."
The light in Tan Yan's eyes extinguished completely.
He handed the Room Card to Zheng Mengni, but it was Wei Jingxi who reached out to take it. The thin card slipped into his pocket, faintly warm with body heat; he wished he could snap it in half.
He said nothing, wearing a gentle and harmless expression. "Let's go, Xiao Ni."
Tan Yan silently watched their retreating figures, determined to engrave this scene in his mind. There would be no second chance; he vowed to himself.
