Hearing Zheng Mengni's voice was like a dog catching the scent of canned food; Wei Jingxi felt as if his tail were wagging like a propeller, eager to rush past Tan Yan and into Xiao Ni's embrace.
But he couldn't do that.
Wei Jingxi feigned restraint, giving a casual hum and saying in an unremarkable tone, "Xiao Ni, I've been looking for you. Can you come out with me for a moment?"
Polite.
Submissive.
He was trying hard to play the part that Xiao Ni liked, hoping it would give him a chance to draw closer to her.
Tan Yan's gentle demeanor vanished completely; he showed no signs of yielding or making way. The cold, sinister glint in his eyes reflected Wei Jingxi's arrogant and self-satisfied expression.
His heart felt as if it were being torn in two.
One half was cold and nearly ruthless, forcing him not to reveal any signs of vulnerability or the pitiful expression that could be easily exploited. The other half was bleeding quietly, ticking away like a countdown clock, for he had sensed something unusual in Zheng Mengni's tone.
She did not reject Wei Jingxi.
She might very well leave, right after being with him, to go to another man.
Fine, come on in.
Tan Yan stood silently in place, his eyes suddenly reddening.
The redness seeped like blood, yet there were no traces of heartbreak within it.
Wei Jingxi smiled without speaking as he glanced at Tan Yan, seemingly confident that everything was under control.
He had anticipated this situation because long before Tan Yan, he had already experienced Zheng Mengni's coldness and indifference.
The tides had turned.
A sudden sense of exhilaration washed over him.
As Wei Jingxi stepped through the door, Zheng Mengni regarded him quietly and casually instructed, "Help me organize the exam papers; I want to take them with me."
Wei Jingxi responded with an "Oh," his head still spinning; he could hardly believe how agreeable Xiao Ni was being.
His footsteps were light as he walked into the bedroom, only to be greeted by a bed covered in exam papers.
He casually picked one up, but his smile froze. His hands trembled.
He kept reassuring himself that these belonged to Xiao Ni.
Xiao Ni's.
Wei Jingxi could hardly contain his frustration; he wanted nothing more than to crumple the pile of papers and make Tan Yan eat them.
But upon further reflection, he decided against rewarding him.
Wei Jingxi suddenly bent down, searching for something.
On the floor, under the bed, in the trash can, even on the nightstand.
Finally, he found what he was looking for.
Holding the exam paper, Wei Jingxi squatted down with a sullen expression, feeling an urge to pick it up and check the model number.
A competitive spirit surged within him; he wanted to compare scores.
But Zheng Mengni interrupted him as she walked in, urging, "Can you hurry up?"
Wei Jingxi nearly jumped out of his skin.
That was close. He almost acted like a creep by picking up their things.
