It was unclear who got up first. They were sprawled among the piles of exam papers. Indeed, as Tan Yan had said, it was quite rough against the skin. She squinted her beautiful eyes, a faint smile blooming on her cheeks. Silently, she took back the initiative into her own hands.
"You know well that breaking off the engagement with the Wei Family is for Tan Yan's sake. Our families are vastly different, and the gap between you and Tan Yan is even greater. If you keep standing still without moving forward, he will drift further away from you!"
Zheng Mengni stared at this lost fish, still recalling Zheng Yicheng's reprimand. "Dad, am I close enough now?"
Suddenly, she said, "Tan Yan."
Tan Yan had been holding back, but at that moment, when Zheng Mengni called his name out of the blue, he could no longer avoid it. A drop of sweat slid down his brow, stinging and painful.
He asked in confusion, "What?"
Tan Yan's ears turned even redder; he couldn't believe such a sound came from his own mouth. His entire body felt several shades pinker than before; his fair skin made it all too obvious.
Tan Yan slightly opened his eyes, and in Zheng Mengni's clear pupils, he saw his own disordered reflection. The calm composure he once had vanished completely; he no longer resembled himself.
Even in this situation, he still noticed that Zheng Mengni seemed to be lost in thought. If it were not him here today but Gao Lei or someone else, would Xiao Ni treat them the same way?
Tan Yan grasped Zheng Mengni's chin, pulling her gaze into his own, forcing her to retract her thoughts that were drifting towards others. When he realized that Zheng Mengni was no longer distracted, Tan Yan felt a sense of satisfaction as he closed his eyelids, his dark lashes fluttering gently.
Just then, there was a rapid knocking at the door.
Zheng Mengni quickly pulled away, but Tan Yan gently held her wrist and drew her back into his embrace. "It must be the cleaning staff," she said.
Zheng Mengni struggled free from him. "I cleaned before I came."
Tan Yan replied calmly, "Alright, I'll go open the door."
He first gathered all of Zheng Mengni's clothes, leaving nothing behind. Only then did he pick up his own clothes from the floor, turning his back to dress himself properly.
The knocking on the door never ceased, accompanied by the sound of someone on the phone, seemingly calling for help to force the door open.
After putting on her clothes, Zheng Mengni looked at the crumpled exam paper and felt a pang of sympathy as she gently smoothed it out. She had no regrets about what she had just done, and she was not afraid of anyone coming to confront her at this moment.
Whoever it was would only serve as her reason to leave this place. As for Tan Yan, she had never considered taking responsibility for him. He had chosen this willingly; she hadn’t forced him into anything.
She merely wanted to see how easily Zheng Yicheng’s so-called closeness could be achieved. Now it seemed that it was not much of a challenge after all. Tan Yan truly could not resist temptation.
The incessant knocking continued, giving Zheng Mengni a headache. Being interrupted halfway through anything was unpleasant for anyone. She peered out through the doorframe and noticed that Tan Yan was standing at the door, not opening it immediately. Instead, he waited calmly until the person outside was on the verge of breaking down before he leisurely opened the door.
Zheng Mengni had no idea who had come; Tan Yan blocked the entrance, giving no one a chance to barge in. She sat quietly on the bed, waiting for an opportunity.
Wei Jingxi's appearance did not surprise Tan Yan. He asked casually, "What?"
Wei Jingxi's eyes were bloodshot, filled with a destructive impulse. He gritted his teeth and asked each word with great difficulty, "You... how... are you here? Where is Xiao Ni?"
Tan Yan seemed to find his words amusing: "And you? How are you here?"
