The next day, at the Wei Family residence.
Wei Nanxuan pushed the door open and was momentarily blinded by the bright light filling the room. All the curtains that could block the sunlight had been drawn back completely, and every light in the living room was turned on at the peak of the day’s brightness.
Instinctively, Wei Nanxuan closed his eyes against the harsh glare, and beside him, Luo Xuezhi also appeared uncomfortable. He squinted for a while, waiting until his eyes adjusted before he could make out a figure nestled on the sofa.
Guan Su Lin was dressed in a purple loungewear set, lazily resting a beautifully patterned Ragdoll cat on his lap. He absentmindedly stroked the cat's fluffy ears with his fingers. The television screen was lit up; he seemed to be watching a comedy, his smile brighter than the sunlight streaming in.
Luo Xuezhi changed into her slippers and stepped forward, stopping at the coffee table that was neither too far nor too close to Guan Su Lin.
"Uncle, you didn’t even announce your arrival. Wei Nanxuan and I weren’t prepared at all; I’m afraid we might not have welcomed you properly."
Usually, Luo Xuezhi carried herself like a proud peacock, flaunting her striking beauty and prestigious background with an air of superiority. But in front of Guan Su Lin, her demeanor was unexpectedly humble, revealing a habitual fear rather than respect from a younger generation to an elder.
Guan Su Lin ignored her, leaning back casually as he focused intently on the television screen, his smile deepening with amusement.
When Wei Nanxuan approached, he finally shifted his gaze: "Niece, son-in-law, good afternoon."
Hearing this young man—who was over twenty years younger than him—address him in such a manner made Wei Nanxuan’s face shift through shades of green and white. He quickly regained his composure and replied, "You."
Guan Su Lin smiled knowingly: "I’m a bit afraid of the dark; I hope you don’t mind all these lights."
"Of course not. We’re family; feel free to make yourself at home," Wei Nanxuan replied.
Guan Su Lin looked at him with an inscrutable smile: "The Wei Family is quite affluent and extraordinary."
As he spoke, he glanced at Luo Xuezhi with a knowing smile that hinted at deeper meanings.
Wei Nanxuan wasn’t foolish enough to think Guan Su Lin was merely complimenting him about a few lights; a chill ran down his spine. "What do you mean?"
Guan Su Lin leisurely tilted his chin up, his gaze landing on the giant display screen. The news was reporting on an incident from yesterday afternoon where an heir of the Wanxie Consortium had thrown money around on Moon Lake Avenue, causing quite a stir.
He commented casually: "It seems like pocket money is rather generous. I wonder if my niece’s child will receive such pampering once born."
Luo Xuezhi's lips parted slightly, a look of disbelief crossing her face. Her uncle had come uninvited, and it couldn't possibly be to compete for her favor.
Beside her, Wei Nanxuan's eyes darkened as he realized the implications of this situation. On the very day after his wedding, his son had been taken to the police station. It felt as though someone had ripped off his face and thrown it to the ground to be trampled upon! How could he have produced such a brainless offspring?
Wei Nanxuan forced an awkward smile. "Ever since A-Qin passed away, I've been negligent in my parenting. I suppose I've given you quite a show."
Guan Su Lin casually remarked, "It's a small matter. You wouldn't mind if I took charge of your son, would you? He's quite a handful; I wouldn't want to trouble you."
Looking around at the villa's location and decor, which he found quite agreeable, he added, "During my stay here in the country, I hope I won't be imposing too much on you. It wouldn't interfere with your honeymoon, would it?"
Wei Nanxuan didn't hesitate in his response. "Of course not."
After settling Guan Su Lin, this esteemed figure, into the most spacious master bedroom on the third floor, Wei Nanxuan pulled Luo Xuezhi into his study.
He gazed at this woman who had accompanied him for many years with mixed emotions. Initially, he had no idea of Luo Xuezhi's true identity; he thought she was just an obscure actress whom he could keep by his side for mutual benefit.
Then last month, she became pregnant. During that time, he had been preoccupied with plans to marry into the Zheng family and had neglected proper precautions. However, he never anticipated that the doctor would inform him that Luo Xuezhi's body was not conducive to pregnancy; if she lost this child, she might never conceive again.
After years of deep emotional connection, Wei Nanxuan decided that he would support her in carrying the child to term. He understood that having an illegitimate child at this juncture would jeopardize their chances of a marriage alliance.
Zheng Yicheng was a cunning businessman who would resort to the most insidious means to secure his interests. He would never allow any blemish on his daughter's prospective husband.
Luo Xuezhi's pregnancy meant there would be another child competing for Wei Jingxi's share of the inheritance; thus, Wei Nanxuan would no longer be Zheng Yicheng's favored son-in-law.
Wei Nanxuan was acutely aware of this reality but chose to protect Luo Xuezhi and their unborn child.
He did not know that Luo Xuezhi also came from a prestigious family and was a young lady of noble birth; how could she not understand his predicament?
