That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow, the impending night began to envelop the world. Back at home, Zheng Mengni sat alone in her Art Studio, intently sketching colors onto her canvas. The art exhibition was about to begin, and she couldn’t afford to be distracted; she was just one piece short and was determined to pursue perfection.
The painting she was working on depicted a lake she had seen while passing through Heqing Town. Her brushstrokes were lively, bringing the muted waters to life. Meanwhile, her phone buzzed incessantly beside her, but Zheng Mengni remained oblivious, refusing to pause her work. She knew exactly what mattered and what didn’t.
Finally, the relentless ringing of the phone became unbearable, gnawing at her patience. Zheng Mengni glanced at the caller ID and reluctantly answered just before it would have automatically hung up.
“What?” Her tone was far from cold; it simply lacked any emotion.
“Xiao Ni, come downstairs. I need to talk to you,” Wei Jingxi said, seemingly unfazed by the time of day, as if nothing had happened, trying to negotiate with her.
Zheng Mengni tightened her grip on the paintbrush. “I’m busy right now. If you have something to say, send me a message. I’ll read it when I have time.”
“Come down.”
Wei Jingxi’s stubbornness carried a hint of desperation that he tried hard not to reveal. He had always believed that he could never lower himself in such a way.
“I won’t,” Zheng Mengni replied firmly.
He silently counted in his mind how many times Zheng Mengni had rejected him. Wei Jingxi realized with growing anxiety that his obsession with love had transformed him into someone unrecognizable. Accustomed to commanding the winds and rain, he was now tasting the bitterness of unrequited feelings, as if every nerve in his body had been twisted painfully.
“Just come down for ten minutes; it won’t take more of your time,” he urged.
Before he could finish speaking, she hung up on him. He called again, but she continued to reject his calls. After several frustrating attempts, she finally blocked him entirely.
The message was clear enough by now.
She still had so much to say, and it was surprising that she had never noticed before that he could be so talkative.
Downstairs at the villa, Wei Jingxi stared at the red exclamation mark on the screen, feeling lost and pained as he looked up at the glass window on the second floor. The diamond ring pressed painfully against his palm, and a wave of anger surged from his heart, growing stronger and consuming the rare rationality he possessed.
With a fierce throw of his arm, he hurled the diamond ring into the lake of the Zheng Family estate. Without looking back, he left with a determined stride, his tall figure unusually cold and distant.
One minute later, there was a splash.
Wei Jingxi leaped over the railing, his agile form moving so swiftly it was almost impossible to catch. He plunged into the water, sending up a large spray of Shui Ling. He had no idea how long he spent searching underwater as the sky shifted from orange to deep black.
Climbing back onto the shore, Wei Jingxi's face was pale as he quietly gazed at the beautiful diamond ring in his palm, feeling no joy at having retrieved it. Frustrated, he muttered under his breath and ran his fingers through his damp hair.
Taking a few steps forward, he suddenly noticed Zheng Zeqi staring at him with an expression that was hard to decipher. Wei Jingxi had never appeared so disheveled in front of others; he was always polished and arrogant. But as he passed by Zheng Zeqi, he lowered his gaze.
"Wei Jingxi."
After brushing past him, Zheng Zeqi called out to him. Wei Jingxi didn’t turn around; a flicker of light appeared in his eyes, almost as if he were about to respond.
Zheng Zeqi's voice was icy as he continued, "The fish in that lake were all raised by Xiao Ni; each one has a name. If any of them happen to die because of your antics in there and she finds out, just think about how you’re going to explain that."
Wei Jingxi's expression darkened instantly, his demeanor collapsing in an instant.
