Xiao Ni.
Zheng Mengni turned at the sound, and Tan Yan stood two meters away, his gaze gentle as he smiled at her.
"Is there anything else you need?"
"Wait for two minutes. I asked my assistant to buy you a new dress. Change into it before you go out."
Zheng Mengni glanced down at the dirty hem of her dress, contemplated for a moment, and smiled softly. "Thank you."
She leaned against the wall, holding Zheng Zeqi's silver-gray suit jacket in her arms, quietly standing in place.
Tan Yan approached without making a sound. "I'm sorry I'm late. I let him bully you like this."
Zheng Mengni pressed her lips together.
The unconscious gesture caught Tan Yan's attention just right. Remembering the kiss in the restroom, his expression at this moment could hardly be described as gentle.
"Xiao Ni," he called her softly.
Zheng Mengni was lost in thought, considering how to lie later to distance herself from the new dress and Tan Yan. She didn’t want her parents to know that her relationship with Tan Yan was better than before.
Tan Yan called her name again, pulling her back to reality.
Her slow response inevitably reminded him of Wei Jingxi, that wild dog. Was it reluctance or did he think he was meddling too much?
"What’s wrong?"
Zheng Mengni tilted her head, her clear black eyes filled with confusion. Her voice was always soft and gentle, sounding incredibly soothing and warm.
The darkness in Tan Yan's heart dissipated in an instant. His eyes curved as he took out a pack of tissues and pulled out a folded one.
He reached out, his palm cradling Zheng Mengni's pale face. Lowering his eyelids, he carefully wiped away the smudged lipstick from the corner of her mouth.
"Your makeup is smudged; let me clean it up for you."
Zheng Mengni snapped back to reality and stepped back, her bright pupils filled with distance and wariness.
"Thank you, but I can manage on my own," she said politely.
Tan Yan's hand, which was holding the tissue, froze in mid-air for a moment. After a brief pause, he naturally folded the tissue again and tucked it into his pocket, showing no signs of embarrassment on his face.
His tone was casual. "The clothes should be arriving soon. Let me make a quick call to check."
Zheng Mengni took out her phone and opened the camera, her lips perfectly clean without a trace of lipstick.
Half had been consumed by someone.
Half had been wiped away by someone.
Tan Yan's call ended quickly; his assistant was efficient, so he didn’t have to worry at all. Just as he put his phone down, he turned to see Zheng Mengni staring intently at him.
A subtle smile tugged at the corners of Tan Yan's mouth.
"Um, there's something I want to tell you," Zheng Mengni said.
He nodded. "Go ahead."
Zheng Mengni hadn’t figured out how to start when Tan Yan's assistant rounded the corner, hurrying towards them with a bag in hand.
"I'll go change in the restroom first," she said, taking the bag and leaving in a hurry.
Tan Yan's gaze lingered briefly on his assistant's face before turning gently towards Zheng Mengni.
"I'll walk you there," he offered.
The assistant watched the two leave, feeling somewhat puzzled. He had completed the task assigned by the young master as quickly as possible, yet the young master’s expression didn’t seem quite right.
To avoid running into Wei Jingxi, Zheng Mengni took a detour to another restroom.
Inside the bag was a simple little black dress—conservative yet stylish. Such solemn and mysterious colors rarely appeared in Zheng Mengni's wardrobe. She usually preferred lighter shades that adorned her innocent and pure image. Black always reminded her of some darkness within her heart.
However, the design of this dress truly caught her eye.
Zheng Mengni quickly changed and stuffed her dirty skirt into a bag. She glanced down at her high heels, relieved that she had chosen a versatile pair today. She disliked mismatched outfits.
Tan Yan waited quietly outside the restroom, the first sound he heard was the crisp click of high heels against the floor.
As her foot stepped into his line of sight, Tan Yan leisurely lifted his eyelids. She walked towards him with measured steps. He took his time to look at her. The dress suited her perfectly; the black fabric accentuated her already fair skin, making it shine like a pearl. Her sweet features appeared noble and elegant against the deep color, resembling a luxurious diamond that sparkled brilliantly.
Tan Yan pulled his hand out of the pocket of his black trousers and naturally extended it towards Zheng Mengni. "Let me carry that for you."
"I can manage it myself," Zheng Mengni declined politely.
Feigning ease, Tan Yan shifted the topic. "By the way, what were you going to tell me just now?"
