Too much affection pressed down on Zheng Mengni, leaving her breathless, and that night she developed a high fever. The timing of the fever was uncanny, arriving neither too early nor too late.
Zheng Mengni had been locked in the storeroom by Xia Shu, and news of it reached the Zheng Family before she returned. Given that the instigator was merely a girl with intellectual disabilities, they did not dwell on it too much.
Sun Yao was different. In her eyes, no matter who it was or what the reason, no one could harm her precious daughter. Thus, the name Xia Shu left a bad impression on Sun Yao, one that she would not forget for a long time to come.
The next morning, after her fever broke, Zheng Mengni still felt weak. She had endured a night full of nightmares and was somewhat disoriented.
She dreamt of Ye Bingran—the person she had only met once but who might ruin her beautiful life.
In her daze, it felt as if someone was playing with her fingers.
Zheng Mengni opened her eyes.
Tan Yan sat by the bed, his elbow resting on his knee as he bent over to delicately play with her left hand.
"You’re awake."
He didn’t let go, hooking his pinky around hers while lifting his eyelids to look at her.
Zheng Mengni didn’t speak; she felt dizzy and extremely uncomfortable.
"Auntie told me to let her know as soon as you woke up. Xiao Ni, you should lie down for a bit longer. I’ll go downstairs to greet her."
Tan Yan reluctantly tucked Zheng Mengni’s hand back under the covers, making sure the blanket was secure before pressing the back of his hand against her forehead.
Once he confirmed her temperature was normal, he felt relieved enough to leave.
As Tan Yan casually closed the door behind him, Wei Jingxi arrived at the entrance carrying gifts. He ran a hand through his tousled hair blown by the wind and stepped into Zheng Family’s view with steady strides.
Zheng Yicheng welcomed him to sit down while a servant respectfully poured tea beside them.
Wei Jingxi revealed a slight smile of concern as he glanced upstairs, genuine worry evident in his eyes.
"I heard Xiao Ni is sick. How is she now? Has she seen a doctor?"
Zheng Yicheng's smile was faint. "Just a slight cold; she's almost better now. But you—why are you still out and about when the Wei Family has good news these days?"
"I’m worried about Xiao Ni. Can I go upstairs to see her?" Wei Jingxi blurted out.
As soon as he spoke, the air thickened for a few seconds, sharp gazes clashing back and forth. Directly opposite him was Zheng Yicheng, holding a teacup to his lips but not making a move.
Turning his head slightly upward, he noticed Tan Yan standing at the top of the stairs, a knowing smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
The two locked eyes, creating a silent and cold standoff.
Tan Yan leisurely descended the stairs and stopped in front of Sun Yao, speaking softly, "Auntie, Xiao Ni has woken up."
Wei Jingxi thought he maintained a calm and composed expression, but at that moment, there was a crack of anxiety visible on his face. He silently traced the patterns on the teacup with his fingers, his eyelids twitching involuntarily.
Wei Jingxi was not a superstitious person, but when he saw Tan Yan appear outside Zheng Mengni's bedroom door, he truly realized that something bad was about to happen. This situation was one he feared he could not bear.
Hearing this, Sun Yao quickly stood up and hurried toward the stairs.
Seeing this, Wei Jingxi followed. "I’ll go with you."
Zheng Yicheng set down his teacup lightly and said in a deep voice, "There are boundaries between men and women; Xian Zhi should wait in the living room."
Wei Jingxi ignored him and did not stop his steps.
Tan Yan subtly revealed a smile and without hesitation blocked Wei Jingxi's path. "Why don’t you sit for a moment?"
He tried to persuade him gently, but Wei Jingxi had no intention of being gracious. The shameless third party who sneaked into someone else's wife's room had the audacity to pretend to be good in front of his father-in-law.
Hypocritical. Disgusting.
Wei Jingxi scoffed coldly, "Logically speaking, my relationship with Xiao Ni is closer than yours. Why can you visit her while I cannot?"
Tan Yan raised an eyebrow in surprise. "I certainly didn’t mean that. I don’t understand why you would think so."
