Xia Shu hid in her room, standing in front of the mirror as she untied the vibrant silk scarf around her neck. Several clear, terrifying fingerprints marred her fair skin.
A madman.
Xia Shu murmured in a daze. The man she had a crush on was a certified lunatic. Just moments ago, she had come dangerously close to losing her life.
Tan Yan had genuinely harbored murderous intent towards her.
She swallowed hard, feeling a sharp pain in her neck. She was doomed; Tan Yan had discovered their scheme. With just a few words, he had lured and threatened her into revealing everything.
Before leaving, Tan Yan crouched down in front of her and tied the scarf back on for her, causing Xia Shu to momentarily forget his sinister actions. But the relief didn’t last even a second; he coldly instructed her to hide the marks and not let anyone see them, especially Zheng Mengni.
After a brief hesitation, she felt the scarf tighten as Tan Yan threatened to strangle her again. Overwhelmed with pain and tears streaming down her face, she hurriedly agreed.
Tan Yan immediately released his grip, brushed off nonexistent dust from his palms, and looked down at her for two seconds before leaving without a word, his back radiating cruelty and indifference.
As her thoughts returned to reality, Xia Shu trembled while holding her phone, unsure how to report this incident to her boss. Her boss was also a madman.
She was completely finished; either she would offend both sides or cling tightly to one side and never let go. She touched the swollen marks on her neck and felt a wave of fear wash over her, ultimately deciding to side with her boss. At least her boss was just verbally vicious and didn’t prefer solving problems with violence.
Nervously, Xia Shu sent a message about the exposed situation to her boss and squatted on the ground, holding her head in anxious anticipation.
【Hmm.】
Xia Shu stared in disbelief at the message from her boss.
It was a huge deal, and all she got back was a simple "Mm."
【What should I do now?】
Her boss replied with a hint of regret: 【I never expected you to play this idiot well.】
Xia Shu was shocked: 【So you anticipated this all along, certain that my identity would be exposed?】
【Yeah.】
【Ah.】
Her boss continued nonchalantly: 【You've been threatened, haven't you?】
【Mm.】
【Then that's right. As long as they are still willing to threaten you, your value hasn't disappeared.】
Xia Shu didn't understand and was about to ask when her boss continued.
【Your forged identity has been completely exposed to them; this plan has officially begun. From now on, keep in touch with me at all times, and I'll guide you on what to do next.】
Xia Shu asked: 【So this time I...】
Her boss replied: 【You did well.】
【Did well???】
Her boss unabashedly said: 【If a normal person had played the role, they probably wouldn't have been exposed so quickly. Luckily, you're foolish enough to let us advance our plan ahead of schedule.】
Even through the screen, Xia Shu could imagine her boss's sarcastic tone—was that supposed to be a compliment?
Two days later, the weather improved, and Zheng Mengni and Tan Yan prepared to return to Tianxing District. Before they left, Zheng Mengni found Xia Shu alone and held her arm wrapped in bandages.
Zheng Mengni said apologetically: "I'm sorry, Shushu, I didn't mean it that day."
Xia Shu pretended not to understand and forcefully pulled her hand back.
Zheng Mengni gently patted her head and smiled softly.
"We will meet again, and I’ll buy you a gift to make it up to you, okay?"
Xia Shu remained unresponsive, as if on the verge of tears. The sight of Zheng Mengni's insincere smile irritated her, and she turned to run away.
