The study door was wide open, and Wei Jingxi strode in. Wei Nanxuan stood before a large desk, having just set down his brush, with a freshly written piece of calligraphy drying in front of him.
The air was thick with the rich scent of ink, and on the paper, bold characters danced: "Conceal skill within clumsiness, use obscurity to express clarity, and find extension in contraction."
After a long moment, Wei Nanxuan finally turned his gaze to Wei Jingxi's face, but his words were not directed at him.
"This child has become increasingly unruly due to lack of discipline," he thought. "He even forgets the most basic courtesy of knocking before entering a room. We are family; there’s no need to be so formal."
Nearby, a light and cheerful laugh rang out, filling the air. Luo Xuezhi sat cross-legged on the sofa, clad in a smooth and delicate silk robe, a cigarette dangling from her lips. Her strikingly beautiful features were blurred by the swirling smoke.
Wei Jingxi didn’t spare her a glance and got straight to the point: "What does the door ban mean? Are you imprisoning me?"
Wei Nanxuan frowned in displeasure. "Imprisoning you? Your Aunt Xue Zhi and I are about to be married. If you stay at home quietly until our wedding is over, I’ll let you go free afterward. Just avoid causing any trouble during this time."
"What trouble?" Wei Jingxi retorted angrily. "I don’t care when you get married; I won’t interfere or ruin your wedding. Just lift the ban and let me out!"
Wei Nanxuan cut him off sharply: "Still not giving up? Planning to go after that girl from the Zheng family?"
Wei Jingxi laughed in anger. "Give up? Why should I? She is my fiancée! Just because you can get married doesn’t mean I can’t!"
"You saw how that old fox Zheng Yicheng acted; he has no intention of marrying off his daughter to you."
"How dare you say that! If it weren't for you brazenly bringing this woman back—"
Wei Nanxuan interrupted furiously: "Watch your mouth! Show some respect for your future mother!"
"The marriage alliance with the Zheng family was clearly your doing! Didn’t you ask me to find a way to get them to agree to an early engagement? I’ve been serious about this while you’ve just let rumors spread. Is it the Zheng family that wants to break off the engagement or is it you?"
Wei Nanxuan paused, narrowing his eyes with a smile that wasn’t quite a smile.
"It seems you're not entirely foolish. Yes, regardless of who wants to break off the engagement, this match has been rendered void." He continued leisurely, "Who said only Zheng Yicheng can climb high branches while I cannot use my own tricks against him? People should always look forward; only trash gets eliminated."
Wei Jingxi felt a surge of disbelief rising in his throat. "What do you mean? Clarify yourself!"
He didn’t want to engage further with Wei Jingxi and casually instructed two servants to take him away, hoping to avoid further irritation.
Each servant grabbed an arm as Wei Jingxi cursed and struggled against them, but they managed to drag him out.
Thirty minutes later, news came from the study.
"Sir, Young Master has jumped out of the window and escaped."
Wei Nanxuan slammed his hand on the table. "When did this happen?"
"It should have been a while ago. He drove away," the servant replied, trembling and not daring to lift his head.
Luo Xuezhi adjusted her loose, baggy nightgown and stepped forward, speaking softly to soothe him. "Don't worry, my uncle landed at the airport this morning and is on his way here. If we calculate the time, he should be able to meet Wei Jingxi. Let me call him and ask him to help stop the child."
"Your uncle?"
"Yes, he specifically returned to represent the family at the wedding." Luo Xuezhi was scrolling through her contacts as she spoke. "By the way, which car is Wei Jingxi driving? Give me the license plate number so I can tell my uncle."
Wei Jingxi gripped the steering wheel tightly, pressing the accelerator to the floor.
The car sped up rapidly, and the biting wind rushed in, whipping his bangs aside and revealing a face twisted in anguish.
"Who said Zheng Yicheng is the only one allowed to climb the social ladder? Why can’t I use his own tricks against him?"
What a good idea it was to use his own tricks against him.
The marriage he had painstakingly sought to protect was being dragged into a power struggle where he was merely a pawn!
Suddenly, rain poured down, accompanied by a chilling wind that pelted Wei Jingxi's face.
He rolled up the window and turned on the windshield wipers, shutting out the torrential downpour.
Water cascaded down the glass like a waterfall, obscuring his view of the road ahead.
He felt like he was going insane with fear, unable to imagine how helpless Zheng Mengni must feel trapped in a storm in an unfamiliar place.
