"Shall we get your vision tested first?"
Xia Shu's shoulders trembled slightly as she nervously lifted her eyelids, her round eyes filled with confusion and daze. She reached up to touch her hairpin, wanting to take it off immediately to hide her eyes. The boss had said that the gaze was the hardest to deceive, and she needed to be fully focused when acting. But Zheng Mengni's gaze was too intense, as if it had the power to pierce through her.
She was so worried; what if her flaws were discovered? In a panic, Xia Shu hurriedly removed the hairpin and tossed it away, making a comical face before running off.
"Hey! You child!"
Wang Xia bent down quickly to pick it up, but Zheng Mengni reached out to steady her. "I'll get it; you keep an eye on her."
Wang Xia glanced gratefully at Zheng Mengni before rushing after Xia Shu. The hairpin that had fallen on the ground showed a faint crack. Zheng Mengni picked it up and casually tossed it into the trash can. She turned back, gazing at Xia Shu's retreating figure, standing still in quiet contemplation. Yet, only the eyes resembled each other the most.
After completing the physical examination in the morning, Zheng Mengni had obtained what she wanted and was just waiting to return for identification. She planned to drive back in the afternoon, but the heavy rain kept pouring down, and it would take an hour of mountain roads to leave Hehua Town. Wang Xia suggested that all volunteers delay their return until the weather improved before making a decision. However, this rain seemed far more complicated than anticipated.
At the Zheng Family home, Sun Yao stood dazed in front of the television, a cup slipping from her fingers and crashing to the ground with a sharp sound. Tears streamed down her face in an instant. The hot water she had just poured splashed onto her feet, but Sun Yao seemed oblivious, covering her face as she cried out in pain.
Zheng Zeqi stepped forward to support her shoulder, speaking in a deep voice to comfort her, "Mom, please don't worry just yet."
Sun Yao sobbed, "Hong Lao! Ni Ni's town has been flooded. I was wondering why she hasn't come home for three days. That silly child never tells me anything." She reached for her phone.
Zheng Zeqi guided Sun Yao to sit on the sofa, using his other hand to grab the phone from the coffee table. The news reported that three people had drowned in the town. "What should we do? What about my Ni Ni?"
Sun Yao stood up in a daze and rushed outside. Seeing this, Zheng Zeqi quickly got up to follow her. Just then, the call connected.
"Mom, please stop crying. Xiao Ni is on the line," he said hurriedly.
Sun Yao turned and snatched the phone. "Ni Ni! Are you okay?"
On the other end, a soft and calm voice responded, "Mom, I'm fine. Please don't cry."
Sun Yao choked back tears, "Really? Is it true?"
"The flood hasn't reached us yet. We're currently using sandbags to block off the cracks with the principal," Ni Ni reassured her.
"I want to see you," Sun Yao said.
Zheng Zeqi could no longer listen and took the phone back. He spoke with a mix of helplessness and seriousness, "Mom, the Fire Brigade is already on their way. Even if you took a helicopter now, there isn't even a landing pad in that town."
He added calmly, "Also, travel is prohibited due to the heavy rain."
Hearing this, Zheng Mengni softly said, "Mom, don't worry. I'll be back soon."
Sun Yao's eyes were red as she remained silent, a sense of unease lingering in her heart.
