In the early morning, Zheng Mengni stood at the door with her arms crossed, waiting for the doctor responsible for the physical examination. She was puzzled. After taking a shower yesterday, when had she changed into her pajamas? She remembered hiding under the covers right after leaving the bathroom, but she had no recollection of what happened afterward.
In the distance, Xia Shu was tiptoeing by the window, her dark eyes filled with greed. She focused intently on Tan Yan's profile, raising her phone to open the camera and quietly framing him in the shot. However, the girl standing next to him was simply too distracting.
Xia Shu pressed her fingers against the screen, wishing she could erase Zheng Mengni from the photo beside Tan Yan. She reassured herself that as long as she obediently followed her boss's orders and completed every task assigned to her, she could take her place. Her eyes glazed over as she stared at the picture, fantasizing about becoming this sparkling young lady.
"What are you doing?" Suddenly, someone lightly tapped her shoulder from behind.
Xia Shu jumped in fright, her phone slipping from her grasp and crashing to the ground.
Qin Yue approached with a puzzled expression. "Shu Shu, the doctor won't be here for another half hour. Why did you come so early?" As she spoke, her gaze shifted from Xia Shu's face to the ground.
On the cement floor lay an old-fashioned phone, its screen lit up. Just as Qin Yue bent down to pick it up, Xia Shu quickly stepped on it.
Qin Yue nearly crushed her hand underfoot and snapped, "What are you doing? You can't step on a phone!"
Xia Shu remained motionless, her eyes darting around. "Uh, why am I even telling you all this? Forget it."
Qin Yue squatted down and grabbed Xia Shu's ankle, but no matter how hard she tried to lift it, Xia Shu pressed down harder.
"Don't touch me!" Xia Shu shrieked.
Qin Yue, feeling indifferent, used her strength to yank the phone out. The screen was a bit cracked, but it was still lit up, and she saw a familiar profile.
"Did you take a picture of me?" Qin Yue asked, puzzled.
"I didn't, I didn't!" Xia Shu replied hurriedly.
Taking advantage of Qin Yue's distraction, Xia Shu swiftly slapped her hand and snatched the phone back before bolting away. "If you took a picture, fine! But why hit me?" Qin Yue glared at Xia Shu's retreating figure in frustration, muttering to herself, "I took one too; it’s not like it’s a big deal."
With the help of volunteers, Wang Xia managed to get everyone out of the courtyard and organized them into several lines waiting in the middle of the embankment. Zheng Mengni finally spotted Xia Shu among the sparse crowd. Perhaps due to the angle of the photo, Xia Shu didn’t look as much like Sun Yao in person. Her bangs were long, nearly covering half of her eyes.
Zheng Mengni took out a pink crystal hairpin from her bag and slowed her pace to stop in front of Xia Shu. "Here, let me clip this for you; it will make your eyes feel more comfortable," she said softly.
Xia Shu hung her head and didn’t respond. Wang Xia, following behind, said, "Zheng Mengni, she doesn’t really understand what we’re saying. Just keep the hairpin; if you give it to her, she’ll probably break it after playing with it for a while."
Zheng Mengni held the hairpin in her palm thoughtfully. "We could take her to a hairdresser regularly to fix her hairstyle. Her bangs are too long and block her vision. During the vision check earlier, many kids were nearsighted and weren’t wearing glasses; that’s not good for their eyes."
Wang Xia sighed. "We’ve provided them with glasses before, but they treat them like toys. They drop them on the ground and break them without realizing it; when they pick them up, they often cut their hands."
Zheng Mengni pondered this as her gaze lightly swept over Xia Shu. She reached out to tidy up Xia Shu's bangs and pinned them to one side with the hairpin. Xia Shu's smooth forehead and dark eyes were revealed, prompting Zheng Mengni to smile gently.
