The air suddenly felt thick and heavy.
Tan Yan was quietly watching her through the rearview mirror, seemingly waiting for her response.
"I—of course, I'm not alone," Zheng Mengni quickly replied. "There are over a dozen volunteers here for the charity event, so don’t worry, it’s safe with everyone together."
At that moment, Tan Yan's feelings grew even more complicated. He was someone who preferred order and structure; he wouldn't waste time eavesdropping on conversations. Yet, he had indeed listened in on Zheng Mengni and Wei Jingxi's exchange, missing not a single word.
"So, you really don’t need to come. Just stay home and wait for me, okay?" Zheng Mengni's voice was soft and delicate, bringing a sense of comfort to anyone she spoke with. But when facing Wei Jingxi, there was an added hint of playfulness in her tone.
Tan Yan pinched his fingers together, then unexpectedly spoke in his usual tone, "Xiao Ni."
His voice wasn’t loud, but it was clear enough for everyone present to hear, including Wei Jingxi, who was several miles away on the other end of the phone.
"Xiao Ni?" Wei Jingxi asked through gritted teeth.
But it wasn’t directed at Zheng Mengni.
"Xiao Ni, are you coming?"
Tan Yan unbuckled his seatbelt and slowly turned around, his dark eyes hiding an indescribable intent.
Zheng Mengni visibly froze for a moment, carefully holding her phone as she innocently looked up at the screen with confusion. She had positioned herself perfectly. From Tan Yan's perspective, it seemed as if Zheng Mengni was gazing directly at him.
Wei Jingxi raised her voice in question: "Zheng Mengni! What did you just say to me?"
She whispered back, "W-what’s wrong?"
Her timid demeanor made Wei Jingxi think she might have sounded too harsh and frightened her. Just as she was about to apologize, she felt like slapping herself in frustration.
There were men hiding in the car after all.
"You're taking another man with you and not bringing him along!"
He still shamelessly thought about apologizing to her for his loud voice.
"Who are you talking to?"
Wei Jingxi felt a moment of calm, no, she couldn't calm down at all.
Who was she speaking to in such a soft and delicate tone?
Who was she staring at with that tearful expression?
Of course, it was you.
Zheng Mengni quietly brought her phone closer, angling it towards her face, her small features completely occupying the large screen.
Wei Jingxi asked, "Why are you holding your phone so close?"
"I'm a bit carsick, just trying to see you more clearly," she replied, blinking her big, sparkling eyes with a smile.
Carsick? Wei Jingxi panicked. "No, you need to send me your location right now. I have to come over."
Actually, Tan Yan had just opened his mouth when Zheng Mengni quickly covered his lips with her hand, bringing the phone closer in advance to avoid capturing this action.
Zheng Mengni didn't even look at Tan Yan; instead, she sweetly pouted at Wei Jingxi. "No need! By the time you get here, I'll be fine."
Zheng Mengni's palm felt so warm and fragrant that Tan Yan was instantly enveloped in a sweet and enticing aroma. With every breath he took, he could feel her warmth.
He held his breath, trying to minimize his presence. Although Tan Yan didn't understand why he was doing this, he probably hoped that Zheng Mengni's hand would linger on his face a little longer.
The video call with Wei Jingxi lasted as long as Tan Yan's mouth was covered by Zheng Mengni's hand. She coaxed him into submission in just a few moments, prompting Wei Jingxi to hang up decisively.
"Alright, just come back early."
"No problem, I'll miss you."
As the call ended, Zheng Mengni finally remembered him. She cast a guilty and innocent glance his way, but the moment their eyes met, she quickly looked down and let go of his hand.
"I'm... I'm sorry."
