It had been some time since Wen Qian graduated from university, and her business had started to show some success. She had bought a house and a car. Xiao Chen had just begun his studies, while Lu Zheng was still working hard in the military.
One day, the family finally managed to gather together for a meal. After eating, Lu Zheng kicked their son out, telling him to go somewhere cool and stay there. Xiao Chen, now grown into a young man, covered his sore backside and looked at Wen Qian with a pitiful expression.
“Mom, look at him! We just met, and instead of being nice to me, he dares to hit me!”
At that moment, Wen Qian had her hair up, revealing her delicate features. The warm sunlight bathed her face, radiating a gentle aura. Over the years of running her business, she had learned a lot—how to navigate social situations and the art of conversation. She had also come to realize just how foolish she had been in her past life.
Every time she thought about it, she couldn’t help but chuckle at her own naivety. As time passed, the bitterness within her faded away, gradually replaced by a more graceful demeanor.
Wen Qian smiled and gently ruffled her son's hair as he leaned closer. “Go play for now; your dad and I really need to talk. Don’t be mad at him.”
The proud Lu Chen huffed and said slowly, “Since Mom said so, I’ll forgive you this time. But you can’t hit me again in the future.”
With that, he dashed off as if afraid Lu Zheng would chase after him.
Over the years, Wen Qian had become increasingly composed while Lu Zheng revealed more of his youthful mischief when he was with their son. The two of them would often bicker playfully, neither willing to back down until they forced Wen Qian to intervene.
If anyone were to hear about it, they wouldn’t believe that such an impressive Deputy Commander Lu could be so playful and affectionate behind closed doors.
Their son quickly climbed onto Wen Qian’s lap, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder as he expressed his grievances.
“Look at that little brat looking so smug! You shouldn’t spoil him so much; it makes me uncomfortable.”
“Why are you so jealous now? You’re even getting jealous of your own son,” Wen Qian replied with a helpless smile as she reached back to pat the head of the big man behind her.
She rubbed it a couple of times before quickly pulling her hand away. “Ouch! That’s painful!”
“I don’t care! That little brat is already this big and still trying to compete with me for your attention; he deserves a good lesson.”
As Lu Zheng spoke, an idea popped into his mind. “How about I let that little brat come train with me in the army during summer vacation? Look at him now; he’s so weak that I could knock him down with one punch.”
“Considering your big fists, who wouldn’t fall?” Wen Qian teased.
Though she thought this way, she also felt that it wasn’t a bad idea after all. She hoped that Chen Chen could learn some self-defense skills.
The past wouldn’t repeat itself; they needed to work hard for a better future!
“Alright then! If you can take him along, go ahead!”
“I have a business trip to Beijing next month. Is there anything you want me to bring back?”
Lu Zheng shook his head but suddenly remembered something. “Where will you be staying in Beijing?”
"Are we staying at a guesthouse?"
The man behind her suddenly hesitated and fell silent. Wen Qian curiously reached up and pinched his cheek. "Are you hiding something from me? Hurry up and tell me. If I find out later, I won't let you off the hook."
After saying that, she squeezed a bit harder, as if to threaten him.
He chuckled lightly, a low laugh escaping his lips. "It's nothing much, just that I bought a house without telling you."
"What?" Wen Qian exclaimed, shifting her body to sit sideways on Lu Zheng's lap, wrapping her arms around his neck. "You bought a house? Where?"
"In Beijing!"
"Really?" Her eyes sparkled as she looked at Lu Zheng. The housing prices in Beijing had risen significantly; she had wanted to buy one for a long time but lacked the channels and found it quite expensive.
"When did you buy it? How come I didn't know?"
For all these years, Lu Zheng's salary had always been given to her, and she never really paid attention to how much or how little it was.
"A comrade introduced it. He asked if anyone in the unit wanted to buy, and I thought you'd definitely like it, so I went ahead and bought it."
"How much did you spend?"
"Not much. I got a friendly price. I've had it for several years now; I bought it when you were preparing for your college entrance exams. I thought you would go to university in Beijing, so that's why I bought it."
"I just didn't expect you wouldn't go there later and came down south instead, so it's been sitting there for now. But since it's in Beijing, it will definitely be useful in the future; I won't lose money on it."
"You are amazing!" Wen Qian hugged Lu Zheng's head and leaned in to give him a hard kiss. "Then this time when I go, I'll check out the house you bought. We can stay there when we visit Beijing in the future."
Lu Zheng took advantage of the moment and wrapped his arms around Wen Qian's waist, leaning in closer. "Since I'm so impressive, how about rewarding me? It's been a long time since we last met."
Ignoring her protests, he picked her up horizontally and carried her into the room.
"Hey, Lu Zheng! I still have something to tell you!"
"We can talk later; I can't wait any longer."
Inside the room, a wedding photo hung on the wall, showcasing the couple smiling brightly and happily. A family portrait nearby looked somewhat pitifully small in comparison.
In the photo, Lu Chen's face was beaming with joy, his mouth almost stretching back to his ears!
After their tender moments together, Wen Qian lay in Lu Zheng's arms to catch her breath and murmured softly, "Did you have some kind of dream?"
Lu Zheng leaned closer, not hearing clearly. "What?"
"Nothing."
Suddenly feeling more awake, Wen Qian decided not to bring it up again.
She chose not to ask about it, letting it rot in her stomach instead. For now, she was quite satisfied with her life, feeling happy every day.
When Lu Chen returned home, he found himself alone again. He pouted in frustration and went inside to wash up and sleep.
That night, Wen Qian suddenly dreamed of events from her past life. She witnessed what happened after her death. Lu Zheng arranged for a proper funeral for her and Chen Chen.
One day, Sister Wan unexpectedly appeared. She placed a jade pendant at her grave and whispered softly, "Go on, rest easy. In your next life, keep your eyes open and be tougher. Don’t let anyone bully you again."
Suddenly, the jade vanished, and she was reborn! Was the jade the catalyst for her rebirth?
Her gaze shifted back to Lu Zheng, who was now gray-haired and weathered, yet still a formidable presence in the military. One day during a mission, a bullet came flying toward him. Lu Zheng pushed his comrade out of the way and threw himself forward; he could have dodged it but chose not to. He opted to end his own life.
Every night he dreamt of what they had endured, reflecting on all the wrongs he had committed. But whenever he tried to save them in his dreams, they would vanish instantly, pulling him back to reality where he would awaken to find it was all just a dream.
He let out a bitter laugh. Yet when the bullet struck him, he felt an unprecedented sense of relief; perhaps this was where he truly belonged. He owed them everything; it was all his fault!
As he fell, tears streamed from the corners of his eyes, landing heavily on a seed below. The seed absorbed the tears and became moist. It sprouted, took root, and began to grow slowly.
A gentle breeze swept through, bringing new vitality and a fresh start!
Wen Qian awoke with a start and looked at the man beside her. She raised her hand to wrap around his slender waist and nuzzled against him, feeling the warmth radiate from him—a comforting sensation.
Lu Zheng tightened his embrace around her, gently patting her back with his large hand as he whispered softly, "Be good, sleep now."(THE END)
