When Wen Qian woke up again, it was because she was being pressed down by a little bundle of joy.
“Mom, why are you still sleeping? I missed you!” Chen Chen exclaimed.
He hadn’t seen his mother all morning, and he really wanted to be with her. Usually, after class, Lu Chen would go to the office to find Wen Qian. Even if he didn’t say anything, just being able to peek at her from the door was enough for him. But today, when he ran to the office, he didn’t see her.
Wen Qian turned over and pulled Lu Chen into her arms, gently rubbing his little head.
“Did you behave well at school today?”
“I did! I was especially good today!” he replied eagerly.
As he spoke, the little guy began counting on his fingers, listing all the things he had done right: he had attended class properly, drank water, and answered questions well.
Wen Qian smiled at him with affection, her heart filled with joy.
“You’re such a good boy.”
“Mom, are you hurt? Why did Dad say you were tired and uncomfortable and told me not to disturb you? But I really missed you too much.”
The little one worriedly cupped Wen Qian’s face with his small hands and leaned in closer to look at her.
Wen Qian smiled and played along with his movements, turning her head left and right.
“Can you tell if there’s anything different about Mom?” she asked playfully.
“I can’t tell. I just think Mom looks really pretty.”
The little guy laughed happily and puckered his lips to give Wen Qian a kiss on the cheek.
At that moment, Lu Zheng happened to walk in just as the kiss landed.
He walked over and picked up Lu Chen, giving his little bottom a gentle pat.
“Didn’t Dad just tell you not to disturb Mom while she’s sleeping? You’re not being very good.”
The little one cautiously looked up at his father’s stern face and quietly admitted his mistake.
“Dad, it was my fault. I missed Mom too much.”
Wen Qian sat up and took him from Lu Zheng’s arms, shooting him a glare. “If I’m sleeping, it’s your fault too! Don’t blame my son.”
Lu Chen obediently wrapped his arms around Wen Qian’s neck, leaving his bottom exposed for Lu Zheng to see.
Lu Zheng chuckled and gave an apologetic smile to Wen Qian as he half-knelt beside her.
During mealtime, Wen Qian felt that she had rested enough.
“I’ll take Chen Chen to school this afternoon; I still have some work left to do.”
“The students’ assignments haven’t been graded yet. If I go this afternoon, I can finish grading them without affecting normal classes.”
In the afternoon, when she arrived at school, Wen Qian found Li Huimei sitting at her desk, looking somewhat off. She seemed particularly downcast, her eyes wide open as she leaned on the table fiddling with a pen, which was completely unlike her usual self.
Curious, Wen Qian asked Lu, who was sitting nearby, what was wrong with Huimei. She looked a bit unhappy. Lu glanced over at Li Huimei's desk and shook his head in confusion.
"I don't know either. She wasn't quite right this morning when she came in, but I didn't have the heart to ask her," he replied. "She's been like this all morning and still looks the same now."
Wen Qian nodded and began to prepare for the work at hand. During the first class, Lu went off to his lessons, and the other teachers who had arrived also left for their classes. The office was left with just Li Huimei and Wen Qian.
As Wen Qian was grading assignments, Li Huimei slowly wandered over and dramatically laid her head on Wen Qian's desk.
"Wen Qian Jie, I have something I want to tell you and need your advice on what to do," she said.
Wen Qian paused her work and looked at her, a light chuckle escaping her lips. "Go ahead, I've heard you've been like this all morning. If you don't speak up soon, I might just be worried you'll suffocate from holding it in."
Li Huimei let out a loud exclamation and began to pour out her feelings.
"Yesterday, while I was in town, Liu Heng said he wanted to date me, but I turned him down and told him to think it through. But honestly, I do like him a bit. I know my reputation isn't great, and I don't want him to face difficulties later on because of me, so I asked him to consider it carefully. But he hasn't come to see me today—does that mean he's really scared off? Are we out of chances?"
She furrowed her brow as she rested her head on the table, unable to stop sighing.
Wen Qian patted her shoulder and offered a more balanced perspective. "If Liu Heng truly likes you, he wouldn't give up so easily. If he doesn't like you, then he might back down. Huimei, if he gives up because of this, it just means he's not someone worth investing in. If he still persists, then perhaps he's someone deserving of a chance."
"There’s no need to be so heartbroken over one person; you will meet better people in the future. Huimei, you're exceptional; you deserve it."
These words sounded like praise to Li Huimei's ears, making her shy as she quietly replied to Wen Qian, "Wen Qian Jie, I'm not as great as you say; I'm just average."
"But you're right; I Li Huimei deserve it."
Just then, an elderly man from the entrance knocked on the door and said somewhat indistinctly, "Li Laoshi, there's someone outside looking for you—says he's Liu Heng from the army."
Li Huimei suddenly stood up, her chair clattering to the ground as she joyfully looked outside.
"Wen Qian, he's here!"
Wen Qian smiled and nudged her, "Go on!"
"Okay."
Li Huimei could hardly contain her excitement as she slowly walked outside, each step filled with anticipation.
When she reached the door, she saw a man standing outside along with a middle-aged couple beside him. She froze for a moment, puzzled. What did this mean? Why were there outsiders here?
Liu Heng noticed Li Huimei and hurried over, wanting to grab her hand but quickly dropped it to his side instead.
"Huimei, you... you came out?"
"I brought my parents along. They know about you and they don't mind at all; they like you, so don't worry."
As soon as he finished speaking, Li Huimei felt an urge to run back inside. Who exactly was Liu Heng? How could he have brought his parents along so casually?
Sensing her desire to escape, Liu Heng quickly grabbed her hand firmly and pulled her toward his parents. He didn’t hide his affection at all, smiling broadly at them.
"Mom and Dad, this is Huimei, just like I told you. I want to marry her."
Li Huimei felt her face flush with shyness as she lowered her head, unable to speak. She pinched Liu Heng's palm a few times, only to find his grip tightening even more.
She shot him a glare from the corner of her eye, silently conveying: When did I agree to this? Can’t you have a little self-awareness?
Liu's parents watched the two of them with smiles in their eyes. Especially seeing their son's foolish grin and the girl’s bashful demeanor made it clear who was pursuing whom.
Liu's mother stepped forward and took Li Huimei's hand, playfully scolding Liu Heng with a smile, "You little rascal! Why didn’t you introduce us to your crush earlier? Now Huimei thinks we’re not friendly! When we get home, your dad will have a good talk with you."
Li Huimei looked up in confusion at Liu Heng, not understanding what his mother meant.
