"Wen Qian, the day is about to end. Are you free? Let's go out for a stroll!"
Every time I have a break, I end up bored at home. All the girls my age in the village are already married. When I chat with the young wives in the village, all they talk about are their mothers-in-law's faults and their children.
Li Huimei sat beside me, pouting unhappily. As someone who isn't married yet, I couldn't relate to their conversations; it was exhausting. After saying that, she irritably scratched her head.
I didn't want to talk to them either, but my mother insisted that I go. I was so tired of it all. My mother said that if I built good relationships with them, they could introduce me to potential suitors and help me get married sooner.
Speaking of introductions, Li Huimei looked even more annoyed. She clung tightly to Wen Qian and pleaded, "Sister, please go with me! My mom wants me to go on a blind date, but I don't want to go. If we go out together, I'll have an excuse not to."
Wen Qian smiled at her, clearly understanding that being sent on a blind date felt like a death sentence to her. "Didn't you like Jiang Qing during the last social event? Any progress?"
At the mention of this, Li Huimei sank deeper into despair. "No, I can't even get into your courtyard anymore. Ever since that one meeting, I haven't seen him again."
Instead, Liu Heng had been around quite a bit. He even came to the school personally to pick up his jacket last time. She had hoped for another chance to see Jiang Qing in the courtyard! But now that opportunity was gone.
"Just go meet him; what if you actually like him?" Wen Qian suggested after some consideration. "A blind date doesn't have to lead to anything serious; it's just a first meeting to see if there's potential for further development."
"If it doesn't work out, then we part ways!" Li Huimei replied reluctantly.
"Alright then, I'll go meet him. If it really doesn't work out, so be it." She sighed deeply. "I've met quite a few over the years, but none of them caught my interest."
Lu glanced at her and scanned the surroundings before quietly asking, "Huimei, what do you think of Liu Heng?"
"I think she likes you quite a bit," Lu continued. "Even though he's lively in the army, he usually behaves quite quietly around girls."
"I saw how happy you two were chatting last time; wasn't there any spark?"
As Lu's words hung in the air, Li Huimei fell into deep thought. Liu Heng? She hadn't considered him at all; her heart and mind were still occupied by Jiang Qing.
She looked at Wen Qian again, pleadingly asking, "Sister, can you find out if Jiang Qing has a fiancée? I don't have time to waste on him. If he doesn't, I'll go for it; if he does, then forget it."
Wen Qian raised an eyebrow and nodded, "Okay."
To be honest, she felt a bit envious and admired Li Huimei's courage. Nowadays, women were so reserved; no one dared to pursue or express their feelings openly. Everyone seemed to want to keep their distance.
Li Huimei's personality was truly rare!
Guan Nian'er walked in and looked at Li Huimei with disdain. "If you're so eager to get married, why not just find a man and settle down? Otherwise, you'll really end up as an old maid; even the yellow vegetables will be cold by then."
That was going too far!
"Do you think you're still young? You're only a month older than me! How can you say that?"
"If I'm an old maid, then what does that make you? An old lady?"
Guan Nian'er's face flashed with embarrassment and discomfort before she loudly retorted, "I'm going to the countryside for rural development; I'm not like you! When I return to the city, I'll still be able to find someone. Unlike you, who are already an old maid."
"Rural development?" Li Huimei laughed in anger. "You call that development? If you don't come back and destroy everything we have, we'll be thankful!"
With that, Li Huimei began counting on her fingers all the foolish things Guan Nian'er had done since going to the countryside.
"On your first day in the countryside, you refused to ride in the ox cart and insisted on walking back to the village by yourself. You almost got lost halfway, and the whole village had to come looking for you."
"And when you first worked in the fields, you nearly chopped your own foot off while showing off!"
"The next day, you pretended to faint and got caught!"
"You even flirted with the men in the village to get them to bring you food—my third brother! If it weren't for me, you'd have sold him off by now."
At this point, Li Huimei gritted her teeth in frustration. Her third brother was such a fool; he had actually fallen for Guan Nian'er's tricks.
Since going to the countryside, Guan Nian'er had claimed she was the most favored child in her family.
"Pfft! Favored? You've been there so long without receiving a single package or any money—just one letter telling you about sending grain from the village to the city."
"Guan Nian'er... Nian'er! That name must have some unexpected significance!"
Li Huimei maintained her opposition to gender discrimination but sometimes found herself having to endure it.
Guan Nian'er shouted, "Shut up! Who told you to say those things? You're just making things up; I haven't done anything!"
"If you haven't done anything, then deep down you know what you've done," Li Huimei replied with her arms crossed and a cold sneer.
"I remember when they were hiring teachers at school; your name wasn't on the list after the exam. But suddenly it appeared—who knows if there was some inside story behind that?"
With that, she pretended to casually adjust her braid.
What was said felt like a very ordinary situation. However, what surprised everyone was Guan Nian'er’s intense reaction. She screamed and lunged at Li Huimei.
"You little bitch, I’ll kill you! I’ll make you pay for your nonsense!"
Li Huimei wasn’t scared at all; in just a few moves, she had Guan Nian'er pinned down. The two seemed ready to continue their fight when they were interrupted by a voice from outside.
"What’s going on here? Get up right now! There are students outside! If you keep fooling around, what will happen when they see you? Are you teachers still going to do your jobs? If not, I’ll find someone else!"
As the principal's words echoed, the two released each other and stood up to straighten their clothes. While Guan Nian'er tidied herself up, Li Huimei merely tugged at her rumpled shirt.
Guan Nian'er glared at Li Huimei defiantly, tears welling in her eyes—embarrassment from being exposed, shame from being caught, and sadness all mixed together. Why did she have to suffer so much?
"Guan Nian'er, come with me. Everyone else should behave and study for the upcoming lessons," the principal commanded before turning to leave. After a moment of hesitation, Guan Nian'er nervously followed him, clearly anxious and reluctant to go but knowing she had no choice.
Wen Qian watched the scene unfold and felt it was a bit strange. Li Huimei strutted over confidently, seemingly oblivious to the danger. "She really doesn’t know her limits. We fought back in the village, and she never stood a chance against me. Now she dares to come after me again? Isn’t that just asking for trouble?"
La la la!
Li Huimei happily shook her head, shaking off any lingering unhappiness as if it had never existed. She seemed even more cheerful than usual.
Later, as Wen Qian passed by the principal's office after work, she heard strange noises coming from inside. She wanted to ignore it but felt rushed and didn’t think much of it. The sounds definitely had something to do with her; why bother overthinking it? Still, they did sound a bit like Guan Nian'er’s voice.
