Wen Qian looked at him with a frown, sensing something was off. "What's wrong? Why are you in such a hurry?"
Lu Zheng hesitated for a moment before replying in a low voice, "I have a mission."
Wen Qian let out a sudden sigh of relief, giving him a glance. "Is that all? I thought something serious had happened. You've been on missions before."
"Are you going to pack your things yourself, or do you want me to help you?"
Wen Qian turned and walked into the house, her hands clenching into fists as she blinked her eyes unnaturally.
Lu Zheng hadn’t expected Wen Qian to respond so calmly; he had rushed back specifically for this. When the families of the soldiers first arrived, they were all extremely worried about their loved ones going on missions. On his way back, he had felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. Now, it felt like a bucket of cold water had been thrown over him.
He chuckled softly to himself and headed inside. "I can manage packing on my own."
As Lu Zheng gathered his things, Wen Qian sat nearby watching him. After a moment of hesitation, she asked, "When will you be back from this mission? How long will you be gone?"
"About a week," he replied. "If everything goes smoothly, I should be back early."
"You'll miss teaching at school and won't be there for Chen Chen's first day. I'll make it up to you both next time."
Lu Zheng paused in his packing and looked at Wen Qian apologetically. "When are you all leaving?"
"Tomorrow morning!"
Wen Qian breathed a sigh of relief. "Tomorrow morning? You came back so early today."
Lu Zheng looked at her, his tone revealing a hint of grievance. "The commander specifically asked me to return early; it wasn't my choice."
Wen Qian nodded helplessly, her expression somewhat dismissive. "Just explain things to Chen Chen tonight; I'm worried he might feel upset."
Since moving to the military district, Lu Zheng had taken care of most family matters and everything related to Lu Chen. Aside from laundry, Wen Qian only occasionally helped out.
As dinner time approached, Lu Chen came running home with his backpack, looking cheerful.
Wen Qian had set a rule for him: he must return home before dinner and not linger at other people's houses.
In the family compound, it was common for neighbors to invite children over for meals when they saw them playing at home. However, if they stayed too long, it would disrupt the household's routine.
It was important for children to understand boundaries; adults should also set an example.
In these times when food was scarce even for one’s own family, inviting outsiders over could lead to even less for everyone at home.
So every evening as dinner time neared, Lu Chen would rush back home because if he returned late or didn’t come back at all, neither Wen Qian nor Lu Zheng would save him any food or allow him snacks.
It was essential to establish certain rules for him.
"Dad, look at the backpack Mom made for me!"
Lu Chen stood up straight, proudly holding the small backpack in front of him, his head held high.
Lu Zheng smiled at him. "Go on, show it off."
"See? Everyone else is envious of me! They all love my backpack because Mom made it for me."
He dashed over and wrapped his arms around Wen Qian's neck, puckering his lips to plant a kiss on her cheek. "Thank you, Mom!"
Wen Qian playfully tapped the little guy's nose and told him to take off the backpack. "Go wash your hands first, then come back for dinner."
As she watched his cheerful figure run off, a slight smile graced her lips, but a hint of sorrow flickered in her eyes.
In the family compound, there were many parents who doted on their children. With Lu Chen's antics, she knew she'd be approached by other parents tomorrow.
After dinner, the house was quiet. Lu Chen looked at Wen Qian curiously. "Mom, aren’t you going to take a shower?"
"Dad has something to tell you. After he’s done, you can go shower."
Lu Chen turned his gaze to Lu Zheng with a puzzled expression. "Dad, what do you want to say?"
"Chen Chen, Dad has to go on a mission. I won't be able to accompany you on your first day of school. You need to listen to your mom and go with her. We'll go together next time I come back."
Lu Chen nodded obediently. "I’ll be good."
"Are you really not surprised?" Lu Zheng couldn't help but ask. "Aren't you worried about Dad?" He glanced subtly at Wen Qian as he spoke.
Lu Chen shook his head. "Not worried! The uncles all go on missions."
When they arrived here, some of the men from the family compound were also on missions. Lu Chen had curiously asked his friends about it.
One friend proudly told Lu Chen, "My dad is amazing! He goes on missions to catch bad guys."
Lu Chen hugged Lu Zheng's neck and asked with bright eyes, "Dad, are you really amazing? Are you going to catch bad guys?"
Lu Zheng chuckled helplessly. "Yes, Dad is going to catch bad guys."
"Oh yeah! My dad is finally going to catch bad guys!"
Wen Qian couldn't help but bend over laughing, especially at the sight of Lu Zheng's mixed expression of disappointment and relief.
She clapped her hands and said, "Alright then! I'm going to take a shower; you two can chat!"
While Wen Qian was in the shower, she felt a twinge of anxiety. Recently, she had gotten to know quite a few of the other wives in the family compound through Aunt Tian and Aunt Du.
During their conversations, they often discussed their husbands going on missions. Although everyone claimed not to worry, their eyes betrayed them with unspoken concern.
How could one not worry about their loved ones? How could one not worry about their partner?
When she returned from her shower and saw the items Lu Zheng had laid out on the table, her emotions surged again.
She and Lu Chen had just begun to settle down; now they had to face the possibility of another family member being in danger. This household was destined for turbulence! As long as Lu Zheng remained in this line of work, such situations would keep arising.
Just as the sisters-in-law said, after experiencing more, one becomes less worried and accustomed to it.
When Lu Zheng and Lu Chen returned after taking a shower, they saw Wen Qian lying on the bed resting. As the lights were turned off, Wen Qian suddenly spoke up, "Do you need me to prepare something for you to eat in the morning?"
"No, I've ordered something. You should sleep with Chen Chen!"
Wen Qian, who should have been unable to sleep, unexpectedly fell asleep right away. When she woke up again, she heard the sound of clothes rustling in the room.
Opening her eyes, she saw Lu Zheng dressing and tidying up his things. "There are some egg cakes in the cupboard; take a few to eat on the way."
When Lu Zheng suddenly heard her voice and turned to look, he found Wen Qian propped up on her elbow watching him. "You should continue sleeping!"
Lu Zheng smiled, and even his movements while opening the cupboard to get the egg cakes revealed his excitement.
So this is what it feels like to be cared for and worried about!
After Lu Zheng left, the sound of the door closing echoed through the house, and Wen Qian quietly lay back down on the bed.
Just like that!
Later, when Wen Qian got up to tidy up and opened the door, she saw a sister-in-law standing at the entrance.
The sister-in-law smiled at Wen Qian and said, "Sister-in-law, I'm shamelessly here to ask you for a favor."
"Sister-in-law, just tell me what you need."
"I came to borrow your sewing machine. Can you also tell me how you made Chen Chen's backpack?"
Chen Chen's backpack was unique; it had two compartments inside and was embroidered with his nickname along with a small red flower, just like what Wen Qian's mother had taught her to embroider.
