A few people gathered around to pour water for Captain Chi.
Chi Xuecha was still desperately pleading with Lu Zheng, nearly on the verge of kneeling before him.
"Lu Zheng, I beg you, just like me a little."
Lu Zheng remained unmoved, pulling his clothes away and standing up to distance himself from her.
Seeing his actions, a flash of resentment crossed Chi Xuecha's eyes as she shouted, "You’ve seen me completely; why can’t you just marry me?"
In an instant, the room fell silent. Everyone looked at Lu Zheng in disbelief, except for one person who lowered their head in guilt.
Lu Zheng frowned at her. "What did you just say? When did I ever do that?"
Chi Xuecha triumphantly wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes and declared loudly, looking at everyone in the room, "When you and my dad brought me here, you saw me completely. Don’t deny it; I remember it was you. I saw your back."
"You might not remember, but I do."
"When was that?"
"At the guesthouse, when you came in to bring me clothes and food, you saw me completely."
As Chi Xuecha spoke, her eyes narrowed slightly, a triumphant smile flashing across her face as if she had successfully executed a scheme.
Lu Zheng was momentarily taken aback as he tried to recall when that had happened. Suddenly, he lifted his gaze toward Guan Weiguang.
His expression was not one of inquiry or hesitation but of certainty.
Chi Xuecha noticed Lu Zheng's gaze and felt a jolt in her heart. She quickly questioned him, "What are you looking at him for? This was your doing; you can’t push the blame away."
Guan Weiguang kept his head down, unable to meet Lu Zheng's eyes, especially when Lu Zheng turned his attention to Chi Xuecha; he lowered his head even more.
Lu Zheng looked at her calmly and said, "It wasn’t me; I won’t take responsibility for this."
"How can it not be you? It was you! Lu Zheng, how can you not admit it?"
"You can’t start lying just to reject me. Lu Zheng, you can’t do this."
Lu Zheng fixed his gaze on Guan Weiguang, making him tremble with fear.
With a sigh, Lu Zheng asked, "Weiguang, do you plan to keep making mistakes?"
Being suddenly called out made Guan Weiguang shiver all over. After a moment of trembling, he finally looked at Lu Zheng in panic.
Then he cast a guilty glance at Chi Xuecha.
Lu Zheng continued to address Chi Xuecha, saying, "That day wasn’t me who brought you those things; it was Weiguang who went in. So the back you saw must have been his."
"Impossible! Absolutely impossible!"
Chi Xuecha recalled the scene from that day, speaking in a flurry. "You came wearing that patched-up outfit. I asked you about it later, and you said it was your clothes. How could I be mistaken?"
Lu Zheng's next words struck like a judgment against Chi Xuecha, each one cutting deep, like a blade drawing blood. "That day, Guan Weiguang wore my clothes. They were indeed mine."
"No way, it can't be true!"
Chi Xuecha felt her beliefs of so many years shatter around her; the one thing that had given her confidence was gone. She stood there in disbelief, nearly collapsing to the ground until someone behind her caught her.
Turning to see who it was, she found Guan Weiguang and quickly pulled away from him. "Let go of me! I won't allow you to touch me!"
"It’s impossible, it can’t be true!"
With her uninjured hand, Chi Xuecha grabbed Guan Weiguang's shirt, demanding answers. Her hair was disheveled, her cheeks smeared with yellow iodine, her clothes dirty, and her eyes red and swollen.
"You tell me! Hurry up! What he said isn’t true! It wasn’t you; it was Lu Zheng!"
Desperate for Guan Weiguang’s response, she stomped her foot in frustration when he remained silent. Without hesitation, she stomped down on his shoulder.
"Speak up!"
Guan Weiguang trembled, unable to meet Chi Xuecha's gaze. As he noticed her expression, a flicker of struggle and pain crossed his eyes.
"It’s me! It was me!"
The man gritted his teeth and shouted it out loud, his voice hoarse as if forced by circumstance.
Chi Xuecha froze; her heart crumbled within her. She released her grip on Guan Weiguang’s shirt and looked at him in disbelief and sorrow.
Then, her expression turned fierce. In a swift motion, she raised her hand and slapped Guan Weiguang across the face, shouting in anger. "Liar! You’re all liars! You’ve deceived me!"
"You lied to me! Everything you said before was fake—about helping me—you didn’t do anything at all!"
Chi Xuecha pushed Guan Weiguang away forcefully and quickly turned toward Lu Zheng, looking at him with frantic hope.
"Lu Zheng! Let’s not talk about this right now, okay? No matter who it is, I remember it’s you!"
For so many years, I can't believe you have no feelings for me at all. If that were the case, you wouldn't have allowed me to stay by your side for so long!
Lu Zheng, please don't be so cruel to me.
Lu Zheng took two steps back, distancing himself from her.
Captain Chi looked at Chi Xuecha's distressed expression, and the calm he had just regained was once again shattered.
He turned to the people beside him and ordered, "You all, tie her up and send her to the family compound. Tell your aunt that I won't release her until I go."
Having seen enough of Chi Xuecha's madness, they followed Captain Chi's orders and bound her.
"Dad, you can't let them tie me up! I need to clarify things; I need to understand!"
How could Lu Zheng be so heartless? After all these years by his side, he must still have some feelings for me.
Chi Xuecha struggled wildly, kicking several people and scratching at them with her claws.
"Let me go! Let me go! You’re all just sycophants, my father's sycophants!"
The expressions of several people darkened, and Captain Chi stepped forward, slapping Chi Xuecha across the face.
"Shut up! If you keep talking nonsense, I'll send you back home!"
With Captain Chi's stern words, Chi Xuecha's struggles lessened. She looked at him with sorrow in her eyes.
Crying out, she yelled, "Dad, you hit me! You actually hit me!"
It took several people to finally restrain her, each holding onto an arm.
After they left, only Lu Zheng, Guan Weiguang, and Captain Chi remained in the room.
The room fell silent, with only Captain Chi's sighs breaking the stillness as he looked at Lu Zheng and the timid Guan Weiguang.
He turned to Lu Zheng and said apologetically, "Lu Zheng, it's all my fault. If it weren't for me asking you to do this for my sake back then, things wouldn't have turned out this way."
In the end, I owe you both an apology.
Lu Zheng shook his head. "Captain, you've done me a great favor. A small request like this—how could I possibly refuse?"
Captain Chi forced a bitter smile and shook his head. "I'm getting old; my mind is getting muddled."
Guan Weiguang listened to their conversation and couldn't help but recall that discussion from long ago.
