"What are you laughing at?"
Yi Xuecha looked at Wen Qian in confusion, thinking she had lost her mind.
Wen Qian suppressed her laughter, a mocking smile playing on her lips, her expression one of disdain. "I laugh because you, who came from the countryside, still insist on pretending to be a city person in front of me, and you dare to look down on your rural roots! As the saying goes, a tree may grow tall but it never forgets its roots. How long have you been out of the countryside that you can no longer acknowledge your identity?"
With a meaningful tone, Wen Qian called her, "Auntie!"
"You still have relatives back in your hometown, right? Not to mention your own sisters who are still living in the countryside! Do they know how much you despise them?"
Yi Xuecha realized she had misspoken in her haste and quickly tried to explain, "I was talking about you! What does that have to do with my family or my identity as a rural person?"
Wen Qian merely smiled and remained silent. Then she suddenly said, "Now I understand why Yi Xuecha has been so attached to Lu Zheng; it turns out it's because you, Auntie, have been enabling her behind the scenes, encouraging her to act boldly while you cover for her."
Upon hearing Wen Qian call her "Auntie," Yi Xuecha felt an uncontrollable shiver run through her.
"Auntie," it sounded almost like an insult!
"It's only natural for a person with your views to raise a child like Yi Xuecha!"
"You... you're insulting me! If you say I'm not fit to teach my child, then you're insulting me as a mother!"
Wen Qian raised an eyebrow and waved her hand dismissively. "I didn't say that! Those are your own words."
Yi Xuecha's face flushed even redder with anger; she trembled so much she could barely sit still. For the first time in years, someone had dared to disrespect her like this and speak to her in such a manner—humiliating her. Ever since her husband became the leader of the group and managed so many people, no one had ever disrespected her.
This wretched woman dared to speak to her like this, making her feel as if she were back in the village when people bullied her and her son! She had worked hard to rise above that life.
"If there's nothing else, Auntie, you'd better leave quickly before you embarrass yourself further. I've already said enough."
After speaking, Wen Qian raised her hand towards the door and took a sip of water with the other hand.
Yi Xuecha stood up, trembling as she pointed at Wen Qian. "Even if my daughter Xiaoxue said something outrageous, you can't lay a hand on her! You disfigured her and broke her arm—do you even realize that? So many people witnessed it! If you think you can just brush this off, I can find someone to take care of you!"
Wen Qian shrugged nonchalantly and chuckled softly. "Then why doesn't Auntie go find someone to catch me? I'm not stopping you; you can go right now!"
"You, you are going to ruin my daughter's life!"
"If your daughter didn't provoke me, I wouldn't bother with her. Don't think she's some irresistible treat that everyone wants to take a bite out of."
Wen Qian didn't want to continue the conversation. "When I call you 'Aunt,' it's just a title. You don't need to think that my not rushing you means I welcome you. You can sit here and wait for Lu Zheng to arrive, and then you two can have a good chat."
After saying this, Wen Qian turned and went into the kitchen, placing the dishes on the table while quietly watching her go mad.
Yixue Chaniang was furious. She looked at Wen Qian, wanting to grab the basket of vegetables on the table and throw it at her. But before she could make a move, she heard Wen Qian's voice.
"Aunt should know that I still have some matters to attend to. If you dare to lay a hand on me, I won't hold back. I'm just a rough person from the countryside and don't know how to treat my elders!"
Wen Qian glanced at her, the coldness and threat in her eyes made Yixue Chaniang's heart skip a beat.
Feeling helpless, she kicked a few times in frustration before striding out, muttering curses under her breath.
Wen Qian smirked; the words exchanged were enough to keep her angry for days.
When Lu Chen ran home, he saw new clothes hanging on the line in the yard. He was delighted and circled around them several times.
He dashed into the kitchen and looked at Wen Qian. "Mom, are those new clothes made for me?"
"Yes, they are new clothes for Xiao Chen. Look at your pants; aren't they all torn?"
Lu Chen followed Wen Qian's gaze down to his pants and shyly covered them with his hands to hide them from her view. "Mom, just patch them up with cloth; making new clothes is so expensive."
Wen Qian smiled and pinched his little face. "It's okay; Xiao Chen's clothes are torn, so it's time for new ones. Besides, you've grown taller; your clothes are too small now!"
She pulled at Lu Chen's sleeve and compared it with his arm. The little guy laughed happily and hugged Wen Qian's leg affectionately. "Mom, I'll help you start the fire."
Wen Qian chuckled in acceptance; the little guy was quite adept at starting fires.
Lu Zheng arrived later than usual that day. When he got there, Wen Qian had already prepared dinner with Lu Chen.
Wen Qian glanced up at him and said casually, "You're here; wash your hands and come eat!"
During dinner, no one spoke.
After the meal, Wen Qian went to take a shower while Lu Zheng washed the dishes. Once he finished, he took Lu Chen to wash up as well. Wen Qian remained seated on the bed, engrossed in her book.
Lu Zheng walked over, holding Lu Chen, and placed him on the bed. He asked Wen Qian, "The team leader's wife came to find you?"
"Yes, she came to talk to me for a while," Wen Qian replied without looking up from her book.
Lu Zheng glanced at the watch on the table. His gaze lingered for a moment before he sat down at the edge of the bed to explain. "I picked out the watch myself; it has nothing to do with Yi Xuecha. I didn't know she bought the same one. I actually had a friend help me get it a few days ago, and it only arrived yesterday afternoon. I just didn't give it to you."
"Okay, I understand," Wen Qian said, finally looking up at him, though it was just a fleeting glance.
Suddenly, she asked him, "Yi Xuecha came looking for you, didn't she? Given her personality, she definitely wouldn't let it go that easily! She must know about everything that happened in her unit."
Since Yi Xuecha hadn't come to find her, it was clear she had gone to see Lu Zheng first. In front of so many people, Lu Zheng surely couldn't brush her off!
"Yes, she did come by. At that time, everyone was present; we were having a meeting when she suddenly barged in," Lu Zheng said as he lay back on the bed, playfully wrestling with Lu Chen.
Wen Qian set her book aside and sat up to look at Lu Zheng. "Don't you have anything you want to say to me or ask me?"
With so many people around, she was curious about how Lu Zheng had handled the situation with Yi Xuecha. She had already anticipated how harshly Yi Xuecha might speak after leaving her side.
Lu Zheng paused for a moment, turning to look at Wen Qian. His eyes reflected guilt and tenderness. He recalled what had happened in the office that afternoon.
