"I just suddenly wanted to buy it, um, that's it!"
Lu Zheng's stammering response made Wen Qian doubt the truthfulness of his words. After handing over the money, Lu Zheng didn't even rest at home during lunch. His hurried demeanor only deepened Wen Qian's suspicions about his intentions. She raised her hand to check the time on her watch, her mind clouded with unspoken thoughts.
By the afternoon, Wen Qian had figured it out. She brought some fabric to make a pattern and, after cutting it, headed to Aunt Tian's house with the material.
When Aunt Tian opened the door and saw Wen Qian, she smiled and said, "We were just talking about you! Come in quickly!"
"What were you saying about me?" Wen Qian asked curiously.
Aunt Tian just smiled without answering, looking a bit mysterious. Inside the house, Lin Si was lying on the bed, with another woman sitting beside her.
"Sister-in-law is here! Come sit!" Lin Si tried to get up but was stopped by Wen Qian.
"You should stay lying down! If you're not feeling well, don't get up."
"Oh my, your belly is getting big!"
Lin Si smiled and rubbed her belly. "It's getting there; just a few more days. The little one still doesn't want to come out!"
"I'm borrowing your sewing machine to make a couple of clothes for Xiao Chen; all his clothes are torn!"
"It's right there, sister-in-law; feel free to use it!"
Aunt Tian came in and immediately removed the fabric from the sewing machine, placing a stool beside it for Wen Qian.
While she was working, Wen Qian asked them, "What were you talking about earlier? I didn't catch what it was."
Seeing her confused expression, Lin Si realized that Lu Zheng hadn't mentioned anything when he got home. She covered her mouth and chuckled.
"Yesterday, Captain Lu asked how to cheer you up. It spread like wildfire; everyone is saying how impressive you are!"
Wen Qian paused her sewing and asked, "Who did he ask?"
"Who did he ask? Hahaha! Captain Lu asked quite a few people yesterday—the political commissar and the regiment commander were among them. He asked a lot of people in fact."
The others in the room looked at Wen Qian and laughed. A hint of embarrassment flashed across her face as she felt a sense of clarity wash over her. She recalled how strange Lu Zheng had been when he returned yesterday and how he had inexplicably gifted her a watch today.
There must be something unusual going on!
As expected, he had done something so embarrassing; she felt like she had lost face in front of the troops!
"Sister-in-law, I never realized Captain Lu was so fond of his wife. He always seems so dull!"
The woman beside her chimed in, "I used to be scared of Captain Lu; I never expected him to be so caring towards his wife."
Aunt Tian only smiled this time but didn’t say anything further.
Wen Qian's subordinates moved faster and faster, and she smiled awkwardly. Suddenly, as she spread her clothes, her wrist was revealed, catching Aunt Tian's curious gaze.
"Oh my, is that a watch? It's so beautiful!"
It was definitely a watch; she had seen it that morning. As her sister-in-law spoke, her eyes were filled with envy for Wen Qian's good fortune.
"I heard that Captain Lu goes home to cook, wash dishes, and help with laundry. What a great man!"
"Truly lucky!"
Her sister-in-law suddenly added, "I saw Chi Xuecha admiring that watch this morning too. She liked it but didn't buy it! Chi Xuecha is known for being extravagant in the military district; she never looks at the price—if she likes it, she buys it! It's just that Team Leader Chi has a bit of wealth at home; both of them can earn money. Otherwise, how could they afford it?"
Wen Qian tilted her head slightly to glance at the watch and nodded. "That shouldn't be just any watch!"
"Why not? The supply and marketing department just got this new one, and it's so pretty! I didn't see it after lunch!"
Wen Qian changed the subject and asked Lin Si, "When are you planning to go to the hospital?"
"When else? Whenever the baby decides to come. Staying in the hospital for a day is so expensive; I can't bear it."
Lin Si helplessly patted her belly. "This little one isn't coming out quickly enough; I'm starting to get a bit anxious."
Her sister-in-law comforted her from the side, "Why are you worried? Your Zhuozhuo is so well-behaved; I bet this one in your belly is just as obedient."
"I hope so," Lin Si replied. "If it's too troublesome, it'll wear me out."
Lu Zheng returned to the unit and handed some money to Jiang Qing before lying down on his dormitory bed.
"Did you send it out?"
"Yes, I sent it out."
"Who let yesterday's matter slip?"
Lu Zheng suddenly asked. Jiang Qing raised an eyebrow and replied candidly, "It wasn't me; you should ask someone else."
As he spoke, several names had already surfaced in Lu Zheng's mind. It must be those few who love to stir up trouble!
During assembly, he singled them out.
"Group punishment!"
Liu Heng protested unhappily, "No way! Captain, I just ran yesterday; I'm still not recovered!"
After finishing his run yesterday, Lu Zheng made Liu Heng practice again.
The two faced off against each other. The outcome was obvious; Liu Heng was on the verge of being pinned down and begging for mercy! It was clear to him that he had no choice but to run now. Feeling guilty, he turned and started to sprint away.
In the end, only Liu Heng remained standing in place, his heart racing with fear as he dared not look at Lu Zheng, yet he stubbornly stood his ground. As Lu Zheng approached, he swallowed hard and shouted nervously, "I—I definitely didn’t say anything! Captain, how could I betray you and speak ill of you? I’m your best comrade; how can you not trust me?"
If only he could keep up the pretense a little longer, speak in a quieter tone, and not let the sweat drip down his face, Lu Zheng might have believed him.
Standing nearby, Jiang Qing suddenly burst into laughter. When she caught Liu Heng’s gaze, she couldn’t help but laugh even harder. Liu Heng shot her a resentful look, prompting her to stifle her laughter and apologize for losing control.
Lu Zheng looked coldly at Liu Heng and said, "If you don’t want to run, then stay here and practice!"
"Fine then, I’ll just run!" Liu Heng replied hastily. Just moments ago, he had been insisting he wouldn’t run, but now he was darting away at full speed!
Regardless of whether someone else had said anything or not, Lu Zheng's first suspect was always Liu Heng. That brat had a big mouth; nothing ever escaped his lips. If he found out about something, the entire military district would know by the end of the day.
When Wen Qian came out of Aunt Tian’s house, she happened to bump into Chi Xuecha. Chi Xuecha deliberately blocked Wen Qian's path, standing right in front of her.
Wen Qian looked at her expressionlessly and asked, "What do you want?"
Chi Xuecha glanced down at the watch hidden beneath Wen Qian's sleeve and smiled as she raised her own hand. "Your watch is exactly like mine! Brother Lu Zheng really cares about me; otherwise, why would he buy you the same watch as mine?"
She continued with a playful tone, "By the way, I was the one who wanted this watch first with Brother Lu Zheng!" Chi Xuecha covered her mouth and giggled, her eyes gleaming with pride and provocation as she looked at Wen Qian. "I didn’t expect Brother Lu Zheng to be so lazy that he just bought you one too!"
