Wen Qian put down the paper in her hands, feeling a mix of emotions. Throughout his life, Father Lu had been shrewd and cunning, yet he was betrayed by the very people closest to him—his partner and his good friend's son.
Yang Liu had mentioned in her letter that she saw Old Master Lu two days ago; his hair had turned completely white, and he looked much older. However, there was no news from the Lu family about anyone passing away. Cuihua, who had long faded from public view, was dead.
Lu Yao—Father Lu had not dealt him a fatal blow! After so many years of companionship, there must have been some feelings involved. Father Lu had calculated for Lu Yao all these years, only to end up preparing a dowry for someone else! The Shi family would surely not have an easy time ahead.
Father Lu could show mercy to Lu Yao, but the Shi family had no such privilege; he had no reason to hold back! Moreover, the Shi family had already enjoyed plenty of benefits because of him; it was time for them to pay their dues!
Wen Qian wrote a reply and placed it on the table. When Lu Zheng returned home that evening, she would show him the letter.
After dinner, Wen Qian washed up and lay down on the bed while Lu Chen was being bathed by Lu Zheng. She leaned against the headboard and read a book. It was already June!
The college entrance examination was set to resume! In her previous life, she had followed Lu Zheng closely and witnessed this monumental event firsthand. When she heard that the exams were coming back, she felt so excited that she wanted to cry—but she was a ghost! Tears could not flow from her eyes!
Now that she was here again, she found herself at a loss about what to choose. With the resumption of the college entrance examination and the emergence of private enterprises, should she focus on her studies or take the plunge into entrepreneurship?
She was already twenty-five this year! If she went to university for a few more years, she'd be nearing thirty! No longer young! Every decision now required careful consideration; there would be no second chances in her next life.
When Lu Zheng returned with Lu Chen in his arms, he saw Wen Qian sitting alone by the bed against the wall, a book resting on her lap. The soft yellow light illuminated her profile, making her look gentle and warm.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked.
Wen Qian turned to him upon hearing his voice, blinked her eyes, and gently shook her head. "Nothing much."
Lu Zheng's eyes darkened slightly, and the corners of his mouth turned down in a self-deprecating smile. He then looked up at her and offered a faint smile.
She still didn’t want to acknowledge him! She didn’t even want to share her thoughts with him anymore!
Lu Chen climbed onto the bed and nestled into Wen Qian's arms, but Lu Zheng walked over and pulled him out.
From now on, you are not allowed to lie in Mommy's arms anymore!
Lu Chen blinked his innocent, confused eyes at Lu Zheng's stern face and asked softly, "Why?"
You’re already a big kid now; you can’t keep sleeping with Mommy. You need to develop the habit of sleeping independently. Soon, you’ll have to sleep in your own room!
Lu Chen pouted unhappily, looking at Lu Zheng with a wronged expression. "I don’t want to! I don’t want to be apart from Mommy!"
"Daddy is mean!"
He cried out, tears welling up in his eyes as he looked at Lu Zheng and shouted loudly, "Daddy is mean!"
After saying that, he threw himself back into Wen Qian's arms, crying loudly, clutching her clothes tightly and sobbing, "I don’t want Daddy anymore; I want Mommy!"
Wen Qian held Lu Chen close and looked up at Lu Zheng with a helpless expression. "Why did you have to say it so early? Couldn’t you find a more appropriate time to talk about it slowly?"
Lu Zheng knew he had been a bit impulsive just now, but this was something that needed to be addressed sooner or later. The earlier they talked about it, the sooner Lu Chen could mentally prepare himself and accept the situation!
This was something Lu Zheng and Wen Qian had discussed long ago; they just hadn’t decided when exactly to bring it up. Tonight felt like a good opportunity for Lu Zheng.
"Alright, let’s sleep!"
Wen Qian laid down with Lu Chen in bed while Lu Zheng sat on the edge, watching the mother and son together, feeling both envious and helpless inside.
Suddenly, Wen Qian remembered something and turned to him. "There’s a letter on the table; can you take it to Yang for me? He can pass it on to Sister Yang Liu."
Earlier today, Guo Dajuan had caused quite a commotion. Although the facts were clear, there were still people saying hurtful things that could affect Lu Zheng’s reputation and future endeavors. Before leaving, Yang had mentioned that if Tian could deliver the letter to him, that would be great!
"Okay!"
They would find another time to discuss the sleeping arrangements with Xiao Chen slowly. Bringing it up suddenly would be too much for him to handle right now!
Wen Qian looked down at the already asleep Xiao Chen in her arms and gently wiped away the tears from his face. "It’s understandable that Chenchen can’t accept this right away."
She suddenly felt it was necessary to clarify this matter with Lu Zheng. She spoke seriously: "Chenchen has never been apart from me since he was born; he’s been with me every day. It’s only natural that he can’t accept this."
"You suddenly appeared; of course he would be happy. But now you’re saying he has to be separated from me—he will definitely feel unhappy about it later on, maybe even angry or resentful towards you! He might think you’re taking his place and stealing me away from him. Even though I will support Chenchen, there are some principles we must stick to!"
Lu Zheng looked at her, sadness flashing in his eyes. He knew he truly had no right to intervene in these matters right now.
"Alright, I’ll stop here for now! Let’s sleep!"
She turned away from him, facing the wall to sleep!
Lu Zheng sat on the edge of the bed, staring blankly at the wall, feeling helpless for the first time.
So powerless!
He turned to look at the books on the table, picked one up, and flipped through it, suddenly having an idea!
Pursuing a wife should be no different from going to war!
He would seek wisdom from the heavens and find a way!
He refused to believe that after all those years of military service and facing countless storms, he couldn't win over his wife!
He would cater to her preferences!
He understood this principle well enough!
Encouraging himself, Lu Zheng turned off the light and lay in bed, too excited to fall asleep.
His mind began to strategize for future operations.
Wen Qian had no idea what bizarre events awaited her!
If she knew, she would only look at Lu Zheng and firmly oppose him!
She would plead with him to stop his actions!
With the lights off, Wen Qian opened her eyes, a shadow of contemplation passing through them.
Sigh!
It seemed their thoughts and beliefs were quite different; could they still be together in the future?
Perhaps she should rely on herself!
The two lay on the same bed, each harboring their own thoughts, yet it felt as if a galaxy separated them.
The next morning, Wen Qian and Lu Chen got up; Lu Zheng had already returned from his morning run and placed breakfast on the table.
Little Chen curiously didn’t run over to him asking to be lifted high; instead, he stayed close behind Wen Qian, watching Lu Zheng warily.
Lu Zheng looked at his son helplessly, a wave of sadness washing over him.
After all this time together, was there really no bond at all?
Had he truly misallocated his affections?
