When the first half of the sentence was spoken, Guo Dajuan still had a smile on her face. However, when Yi Xuecha finished her sentence, her expression froze completely. Since Yi Xuecha had said it like that, the matter of looking at the waist money was no longer just a simple task; it also included an additional fee.
After managing to send Yi Xuecha away, Guo Dajuan hurried to the cafeteria. If it weren't for the need to keep this job, she wouldn't have shown up with such a swollen face. Did she really want to lose face over this?
But this trip wasn't entirely in vain; at least she had achieved something—she had resolved Xiao Juan's issue.
In the afternoon, after Wen Yuanyuan woke up, she dashed out of her room and immediately threw herself into Wen Qian's arms. Wen Qian caught her and squatted down to wipe the sweat off her forehead. The weather was still too hot, and there were no fans here; the little girl had woken up drenched in sweat.
"Are you hungry?"
"No, I slept really well!"
Wen Yuanyuan smiled brightly, wrapping her arms around Wen Qian's neck and affectionately pressing her face against hers.
Xiao Chen watched from the side, feeling a bit unhappy. He pouted and ran over, wanting to be held by Wen Qian as well. The little girl had taken quite a long nap!
In the afternoon, they tidied up the place and organized everything that needed to be put away. By tomorrow, after buying grains and meat, they would be able to cook. They also needed to go to the supply and marketing cooperative for some shopping; there were still things that needed to be bought.
At least they were grateful that it was hot now and they didn't need heavy blankets; otherwise, their family would have been freezing.
Lu Zheng was holding a lunchbox and preparing to go get food, but this time Lu Chen refused to go no matter what.
There was a knock at the door from outside. "Uncle Lu Zheng, I'm here to pick up Yuanyuan."
"Brother!"
Wen Yuanyuan quickly ran to the door and opened it. Standing there was a boy who looked about thirteen years old. He had a buzz cut and was dressed neatly, resembling Comrade Wen quite a bit.
Wen Guang held Wen Yuanyuan's hand, bent down to look at her, and relaxed when he saw she was fine. He turned to Lu Zheng and said, "Uncle Lu Zheng, I'm taking my sister home for dinner."
"Auntie is good, little brother is good!"
Wen Guang was very polite; despite his young age, he carried himself with an air of maturity.
Hello, his name is Lu Chen, and Xiao Chen calls him Brother.
Xiao Chen obediently greeted them, and Wen Guang responded, looking at Wen Qian: "Auntie, my name is Wen Guang, but you can call me Xiao Guang."
"Auntie, I’ll take my sister home for dinner now. See you next time."
Wen Guang held Wen Yuanyuan's hand as they left. The little girl bounced along, chattering away with her brother.
Wen Guang protectively guided her, tilting his head to listen to her talk, smiling gently with affection.
"I heard Dad say you climbed the ladder again. Don’t do that anymore; be careful not to fall."
"Brother, when we get home, Dad is going to scold me. You have to stop him; otherwise, I’ll definitely get beaten up."
The siblings’ departing figures were etched in Wen Qian's heart.
Lu Zheng went to get dinner, and the three of them ate before heading off to sleep. After such a long train ride to get here, packing up and scolding people had drained all their energy.
Lu Zheng glanced at Wen Qian, who lay at the innermost part of the bed. The distance between them was merely a bed apart, yet it felt as vast as the Yellow River separating them.
The next day, Wen Qian had already written down the items she needed Lu Zheng to buy. He planned to find the supply vehicle from the army to help with the purchases; the remaining items could be bought at the supply store within the unit.
There was still quite a distance from here to the city. To make things convenient, a small supply store had been set up in the army base where daily necessities could be purchased.
When Wen Qian took Lu Chen out, they ran into Aunt Tian.
"Xiao Qian, are you going to the supply store?"
"Yes, Auntie."
"Then follow me; I know the way."
Aunt Tian looked at Lu Chen and reached out to ruffle his hair. "How’s Xiao Chen doing?"
"He’s fine; he slept well last night."
"That’s good. I was worried he might get scared."
Wen Qian smiled and shook her head. "It’s nothing; he’s already toughened up in the village."
As they walked along, Wen Qian suddenly spotted Guo Xiaojun and Yi Xuecha walking together.
Aunt Tian noticed them too and asked in confusion, "Wasn’t Guo Xiaojun taken away yesterday? How did she get released so quickly?"
Wen Qian spoke up: "It must be thanks to Yi Xuecha."
Aunt Tian shook her head, sighing that encountering her was never a good thing. Guo Xiaojun and Yi Xuecha naturally noticed Wen Qian as well. The two of them walked up to Wen Qian, with Guo Xiaojun looking at her with a mix of pride and disdain.
"Did you really think you could do anything? Look, I'm still here!"
Wen Qian cast a meaningful glance at Yi Xuecha before turning her attention back to Guo Xiaojun. Guo Xiaojun felt as if she had been seen through, causing her to panic slightly as she tugged at Yi Xuecha to leave.
Wen Qian and Aunt Tian chose to ignore them and continued walking forward. After buying some items, they headed straight back to the family compound. Before long, Aunt Tian returned with her daughter-in-law, Lin Si, and her eldest grandson, Wang Zhuo.
Wen Qian hurriedly brought out some stools for them to sit on while Lu Chen and Wang Zhuo played together on the ground. Wen Qian intentionally took out the sunflower seeds she had bought for Aunt Tian and Lin Si.
"Xiao Qian, you’re being too polite! These seeds are quite precious; you should take them back. We don’t need them," Aunt Tian said.
Wen Qian smiled and quickly handed over two handfuls to Aunt Tian and Lin Si. "Aunt, if you don’t take them, you’ll make me feel like an outsider."
With no choice, Aunt Tian and Lin Si accepted the seeds. Sitting down, Aunt Tian looked at Lin Si's belly and asked, "Is it soon?"
"Yes, very soon," Lin Si replied shyly as she gently touched her belly.
Aunt Tian urged Lin Si, "Come on, tell me why Yi Xuecha is so arrogant in the army."
She had sensed something was off when she returned home today. After venting to her daughter-in-law, she learned about the big news.
Lin Si chuckled shyly before explaining, "Well, it’s not much really. Yi Xuecha got married a few years ago but then divorced."
"Go into detail!" Aunt Tian insisted.
"I heard that back when Yi Xuecha's commander wasn’t a commander yet, he got engaged to a family in the countryside. Later on, they came looking for him to get married. At that time, he was in a crucial period of promotion and cruelly sent Yi Xuecha away. Who would have thought that the son from that family was short-lived? He died less than six months after their marriage, and they blamed Yi Xuecha for his death."
"For a while, Yi Xuecha was tormented by this situation until the commander found out and forcefully helped her get a divorce before bringing her back."
"The commander felt guilty about her situation, so he would agree to any requests from her as long as they weren’t too outrageous."
Aunt Tian looked at Lin Si with curiosity and asked, "So why is she so fixated on Lu Zheng? There are plenty of good young men in the army!"
