She held onto Lu Chen, smiling as she stroked his hair. Uncle Yang was also with Dad, and once we waited a bit longer, we would get to see him.
"Really? Is it true?"
The little guy was wide-eyed, looking at Wen Qian, who nodded before he couldn't help but shout with excitement.
"Yay! Yay! We're going to find Uncle Yang!"
Little Chen bounced around the room, his laughter echoing outside to Lu Zheng's ears. He ran out to find Lu Zheng, wrapping his arms around his father's legs and laughing joyfully, eager to share his happiness.
"Dad, I finally get to see Uncle Yang again! I'm so happy!"
His chubby little face rubbed against Lu Zheng's leg. It should have been a heartwarming moment, but instead, Lu Zheng felt a chill deep within him.
A sense of desolation washed over him as he watched Lu Chen's delighted expression, forcing a strained smile at the corners of his mouth.
It's over! It's really over!
His only advantage was gone; his son adored his rival.
Wen Qian leaned against the doorframe, suppressing her laughter as she looked at Lu Zheng's troubled face. She clenched her fists to keep from laughing out loud.
She gently patted her son, casting a knowing smile at Lu Zheng.
In little Chen's heart, he might have already regarded Uncle Yang as a father. Whenever she noticed this, she tried her best to avoid contact with Yang Tong. But every time she saw her son's pitiful little face, she couldn't help but soften.
Forget it; if Lu Zheng doesn't come back, their son will also feel unloved.
As for Yang Tong, she only allowed little Chen to interact with him while keeping her distance; after all, they wouldn't meet that often anyway.
Little Chen liked Lu Zheng simply because he was his father and the blood connection brought them closer. The bond between them was nowhere near what little Chen shared with Yang Tong.
Lu Zheng realized he needed to catch up; he had to work harder to make little Chen like him.
"Mom, will Uncle Yang be happy to see me?"
"Of course! He likes you so much."
"Then I want to prepare a gift for Uncle Yang! I like him too."
The little guy dashed off excitedly, leaving Lu Zheng and Wen Qian exchanging glances in surprise.
They would be living together in the future. Wen Qian couldn't help but comfort Lu Zheng as she saw his defeated expression.
"Don't think too much about it. Yang Tong has helped me a lot recently, so it's normal for little Chen to have some contact with him. It's natural that he likes him."
"If you want little Chen to like you more, you should take action. He's your son; you have the advantage, right?"
Lu Zheng nodded with a smile, gathering his fighting spirit. He stepped forward, one foot at a time, until he was just a step away from Wen Qian. He lowered his head while she raised hers, their breaths intertwining.
They locked eyes, evenly matched, neither willing to back down. Lu Zheng reached out to tuck a strand of hair behind Wen Qian's ear, feeling her body shiver slightly as his fingers brushed against her earlobe.
He leaned in closer, their noses almost touching when Wen Qian suddenly grasped his hand and let out a cold laugh. "You handle your own feelings within the unit. If you dare to hurt Xiao Chen, I won’t hesitate to take matters into my own hands. Don’t blame me if things get out of hand."
She didn’t think he could forget how he had flirted with women in the unit and how one woman had relentlessly pursued him. With that, she turned and left Lu Zheng standing there in a daze.
That’s it? Just like that? Why did it escalate so suddenly?
Lu Zheng was puzzled by Wen Qian's words but dared not ask as he watched her retreating figure. What if asking only made their relationship worse? Had he been too eager?
Wasn’t this what the brothers in the unit taught him? They said that when you like a girl, you should seize the moment; when the time comes, you must act boldly or else the opportunity would slip away. You have to express your feelings bravely and passionately.
Had he done something wrong? Besides, what did he have in the unit that could hurt Xiao Chen?
Wen Qian hurried into the house, raising her hand to touch her flushed ears and the impressions left by his fingers on her palm. When Lu Zheng had brushed her hair earlier, she had nearly wanted to punch him in the face, overwhelmed by an uncontrollable fear.
But after he gently touched her earlobe, her anger dissipated and was replaced by a sense of embarrassment. That was why she had to find an excuse to leave quickly.
After thinking it over carefully, she realized it might be due to her limited experience with men that made her so clueless about love. If any man got this close to her, she would react the same way; it wasn’t just Lu Zheng.
She reassured herself for a moment until she felt calm again. Yes, she was right in what she said.
During dinner that evening, Lu Chen glanced back and forth between his mother and father, sensing something strange about the two of them.
Daddy and Mommy have stopped talking and smiling.
Most importantly, why aren’t they serving me food anymore?
The little one quietly asked, “Mommy, did I do something wrong? Did I make you unhappy?”
“Huh? Why are you asking that, Xiao Chen?” Wen Qian looked at her son in surprise, a bit puzzled.
Xiao Chen pouted unhappily, pointing at his empty bowl, voicing his dissatisfaction. “Then why aren’t Mommy and Daddy serving me food anymore? I thought I was being bad and made you both angry.”
Lu Zheng and Wen Qian couldn’t help but glance at each other. Their eyes met for a moment before Wen Qian quickly looked away, smiling as she served her son a piece of food. “You didn’t do anything wrong, and you didn’t make Mommy angry. But your Daddy… well, that’s another story.”
The little guy immediately drooped his head, looking sadly at Lu Zheng. “Is that really true, Daddy?”
What an opportunity to save the situation! Lu Zheng hurriedly served him a piece of food as well, forcing a smile. “You didn’t make Daddy angry.”
He had always feared that his son wouldn’t like him anymore, and he hadn’t expected Wen Qian to dig a pit for him. He looked at her in surprise, but she wouldn’t meet his gaze.
With that, Lu Chen happily hugged his bowl and started eating, his eyes sparkling with joy as he glanced between Wen Qian and Lu Zheng.
That night, as they were getting ready for bed, Wen Qian lay on the bed and quickly stopped Lu Chen from climbing in. “Your Daddy said you didn’t take a bath; you can’t go to bed yet.”
“Ah!” The little guy turned around with a pained expression to look at Lu Zheng, his eyes full of grievance. “Daddy, I took a bath this afternoon!”
Lu Zheng looked at Wen Qian in confusion. When did he ever say that?
But seeing that his son was about to cry, he hurried over to comfort him. “Daddy will help you take another bath. You took one this afternoon, but you need to wash again tonight.”
“Really? Daddy won’t hate me, right?”
Lu Chen felt sad; it seemed like Daddy hated him. He really hadn’t made Daddy angry!
Lu Zheng looked at his son’s tearful face; he knew Wen Qian was doing this on purpose but could only helplessly glance at her before quickly soothing their son again.
Wen Qian smiled as she watched the two of them. Suddenly, a glint flashed in her eyes as she came up with another idea. She tugged on Xiao Chen’s arm and said, “Your Daddy also said that from now on you can’t sleep with Mommy anymore; you’ll have to sleep on your own in a little bed.”
