Lu Jian looked at her with a serious expression and said, "Come here, I'll give you some money."
Zhang Yan quickly complied and walked over to him. Lu took out some cash from his pocket and handed her a bill.
"Ten yuan should be enough. If it's not, come back and ask me for more."
Zhang Yan reached out to take the money, and Lu's hand brushed against hers lightly. However, his gaze suddenly darkened.
Noticing the change in Lu's expression, she hurriedly clutched the money and ran outside.
Lu was having difficulty walking as it was; climbing the mountain would only make him feel like an added burden.
When Zhang Yan reached the yard, she saw Lu Zheng there. She looked at the village chief in surprise, not expecting him to have persuaded Lu.
Then she glanced at Lu Zheng with a hint of disdain—no matter how reluctant he was, he still had to follow along, right?
"Scum is just asking for trouble," she thought.
The three of them stepped out, and the village chief had already planned to gather a few men. Although their families were unwilling to let them go, they couldn't refuse the village chief's authority and reluctantly followed along with long faces.
Once everyone was gathered, Zhang Yan quickly led them away.
However, when they reached the foot of the mountain, howls from wolves echoed down from above, causing everyone to stop in their tracks.
Someone nervously said, "I can't do this; there are wolves up there. What if we encounter them? It would be certain death! I'm not going to die for this."
The others hesitated as well. Seeing them about to leave, Zhang Yan rushed forward, pleading with them, "You can't go! My husband and my mother are still up there; you can't just stand by and watch us die!"
One man irritably shook her off. "Don't scare me; they're not my family! If anyone dies, it's on me!"
Zhang Yan fell to her knees, begging them earnestly, "You really can't leave!"
She turned to point at Lu Zheng. "We still have him! He's a soldier; how could he just watch you die? With him here, you don't need to be afraid! Please, if you don't help now, my husband will die!"
A few men looked at Lu Zheng with uncertainty. They glanced at the calm figure standing beside them and then at the village chief before reluctantly nodding in agreement.
"Alright then, let's hurry up! Don't you see what time it is? I'm exhausted."
"Fine, fine," they replied in unison.
Zhang Yan quickened her pace as she led them up the mountain. The howls grew louder and closer with each step, making even her feel frightened enough to want to run away.
Following the faint light ahead, they finally arrived and first spotted Ding Cuihua lying unconscious on the ground.
Ding Cuihua's face was pale as she lay there. Someone exclaimed, "This... this won't be death, will it?"
Zhang Yan checked Ding Cuihua's breath and let out a sudden sigh of relief; she was still alive.
But where was Lu Yao?
He’s right in front, just follow me!
Lu Yao, feeling dizzy and disoriented, heard the voices and struggled to maintain his consciousness. “I’m here! I’m here! I’m still alive!” he called out urgently.
The village chief and the others noticed that Lu Yao didn’t look well either.
“Alright, hurry up and carry them down. We can’t linger here; if the wolves come, we won’t be able to escape!”
However, after the village chief spoke, no one moved. His old face darkened as he kicked the man standing beside him.
“Get moving! Didn’t you hear what I said?”
Reluctantly, the man hoisted Lu Yao onto his back. His movements were rough, causing Lu Yao to wince in pain.
Zhang Yan said anxiously, “Be gentle, be gentle!”
The man didn’t want to indulge him; he paused and looked at Zhang Yan. “If you want him carried, then keep quiet. There’s no time for this.”
Another man picked up Ding Cuihua and they started heading down the mountain.
Suddenly, a low growl from a wolf echoed behind them. They turned to see a pair of green eyes watching them.
Terrified, they took off running, even the village chief with his old limbs joined in the escape.
After a hard struggle, they finally made it down the mountain and realized that the wolf hadn’t followed them. They all breathed a deep sigh of relief.
The man carrying Lu Yao spoke angrily, “Lu Yao, did you know there was a wolf nearby and didn’t tell us on purpose?”
Lu Yao stiffened and replied awkwardly, “I didn’t know! I just found out!”
“Hah! You’re lying! Don’t think I didn’t see you glancing in that direction several times earlier. I was wondering what you were looking at!”
If it weren’t for the village chief being present, the man would have thrown Lu Yao to the ground by now.
Everyone stopped to look at Lu Yao as he shouted defiantly, “I absolutely did not see anything! If I had seen it, how could I not tell you?”
Lu Zheng sneered at him; everyone present wasn’t foolish enough to be deceived by his facade. The wolf on the mountain must have already eaten its fill and was watching over Lu Yao and Ding Cuihua, likely planning to make them its next meal. It had only let them go because it saw that they were too numerous to confront directly.
The village chief's face turned ashen, disappointment and anger etched across his features as he glared at Lu Yao. "Enough! Hurry up and get them onto the ox cart. Those who need to go home should do so quickly!"
Old Liu, who was in charge of the ox cart, had been waiting at the village entrance for some time.
A few people walked briskly, eager to rid themselves of the burdens on their backs. What was going on? They had nearly been scared to death in the middle of the night! What kind of karma had the Lu family accumulated in their past lives?
They had almost been caught by a wolf; if that had happened, it would have meant certain death. What would happen to their families then?
The more they thought about it, the angrier they became. Upon reaching the Lu family's doorstep, the village chief stopped and told a man, "Bring Old Lu out. He should come along too."
Before long, the man emerged carrying Lu, rushing forward and swiftly placing him onto the ox cart.
The man quickly stepped back from Lu, brushing off his clothes as if he were disgusted by something that had gotten on him.
When Lu saw Lu Yao and Ding Cuihua's expressions, his own face darkened.
He glanced through the crowd at Lu Zheng, who stood at the back. Their eyes met, sparking a silent confrontation; through Lu Zheng's gaze, he seemed to glimpse another person's eyes.
"Alright, let's go!"
The village chief looked at the Lu family with a headache. With these two uncertain about life and death, he certainly didn’t want to get dragged into their troubles.
