Ding Cuihua was stunned; she never expected Wen Qian to slap her in front of so many people. Moreover, how did she know about this matter? 0

Chen Qiang's words had already kept her awake all night, filled with anxiety and fear. How could she possibly know? 0

The village chief twitched his lips, feeling somewhat relieved that this woman was not his daughter-in-law. He could no longer sit still, standing up and brushing off his clothes. "Nothing's wrong; I’ll be leaving now. There are still matters to attend to in the village!" 0

With that, he quickly walked to the door, paying no mind to Lu Yao's voice. 0

"Village chief! You can't leave!" 0

"What do you mean I can't leave? If I don’t go, I’ll just be waiting to see your family get beaten up. This news has spread everywhere; does this village chief still want to save face?" 0

Ding Cuihua continued to cry on the floor, while Lu Fu sat on the bench with a stern face. Lu Yao stood frozen, staring at the already closed door. 0

"Mind your words; keep your mouth clean. If you keep spewing nonsense, don’t blame me for being ruthless," Wen Qian said as she brought Lu Zheng into the house. When she reached the doorway, she paused and looked back at the courtyard. 0

Suddenly, she noticed Lu Fu's gaze and met his eyes. Recognizing the deep meaning behind his look, a slight smirk appeared on her lips before she turned and walked inside. 0

She didn’t believe that even if Lu Fu had connections everywhere, he could extend his influence across the nation. 0

Lu Yao couldn’t help but complain as he watched Lu Fu and Ding Cuihua. "Dad, why didn’t you read the fine print when you signed back then? Why didn’t you clarify everything? Now look what’s happened—everything is gone! It’s all your fault!" 0

Lu Fu shot a displeased glance at Lu Yao. "I did it to save you all." 0

"Even if you were trying to save us, you should have been more careful! Dad, you used to be so smart; how did you become so foolish? We lost a fortune! How am I supposed to live now?" 0

He plopped down onto a bench in frustration. "You expect me to work my fingers to the bone for nothing? No way! I can’t handle that kind of labor! The last time the village chief forced me to work for just a little while, I ended up with blisters on my palms that hurt like hell." 0

He never wanted to experience that kind of pain again. 0

Lu Fu glanced at Lu Yao and then closed his eyes tightly, clenching his fists by his side. 0

"Get inside; do you want to embarrass yourself further?" 0

Ding Cuihua was startled by Lu Fu's glare and quickly stood up to help him inside. Lu Yao rolled his eyes and followed them in. 0

He saw Zhang Yan in the room and angrily kicked her a few times. "It's all your fault, you wretched woman! If it weren't for you, my son wouldn't have lost everything so easily, and we wouldn't have lost such a large sum of money." 0

Zhang Yan, kicked and holding her waist in pain, gasped as she looked at Lu Yao, who was about to kick her again. She hurriedly rushed over and hugged his leg, crying out for mercy. "Lu Yao, please stop kicking me! I beg you, just stop! I know I was wrong, I've already suffered for it. Please just let me go!" 0

Despite their long years of marriage, Lu Yao felt his heart soften at the sight of her. He stopped kicking her. Impatiently shaking his leg, he said, "Alright, get up quickly. Don't make it look like I'm bullying you." 0

"Okay, okay, I'm getting up now!" Zhang Yan replied as she stood up but was immediately grabbed by her hair. Her head was yanked to one side, and a slap followed. 0

Ding Cuihua's eyes were bloodshot, filled with rage as she glared at Zhang Yan as if she wanted to tear her apart. Her lips trembled with curses. "Wretched woman! It's all your fault! You're a disaster! You brought this misfortune upon my family; it's all because of you!" 0

Zhang Yan bent down to grasp her own hair but found it futile as Ding Cuihua pulled too hard. She could only shift slightly towards Ding Cuihua to ease the pain on her scalp. "Mother, please stop hitting me! I beg you!" 0

"I'll beat you to death, you filthy whore! You dare come back after sullying yourself? My son is not some trash picked off the street!" 0

At those words, both Lu Yao and Lu's father felt uneasy. 0

Ding Cuihua showed no mercy as she pressed Zhang Yan down and continued to hit her. Although Lu's father and Lu Yao felt some reluctance, they managed to suppress their feelings when they thought about the money they had just spent. 0

Inside the thatched cottage, Lu Zheng looked at Wen Qian in surprise, a smile creeping onto his face. "Did you say that on purpose that day?" 0

Wen Qian raised an eyebrow at him and replied, "Yes. If I hadn't said it that way, they wouldn't have agreed so easily." 0

She had taken advantage of Lu's father's urgency at that moment. If she hadn't made that proposal, they might have had even more unreasonable demands waiting for them. It was better for her to put forth conditions and divert Lu's father's attention. 0

This was something she had intentionally suggested to leave them with a glimmer of hope. Once all their hopes were shattered in the end, they would cling desperately to that tiny sliver of hope. 0

Eventually, they would realize that this last hope was merely an illusion of their own making. 0

This would deliver the most powerful blow to them; physical pain could not erase inner passion. Only deep emotional wounds could bring true suffering. 0

Wasn't this exactly what they had inflicted upon her in her past life? 0

The painful memories and struggles she had experienced lingered in her mind. They had initially given her hope by promising news about Xiao Chen, only to deliver the most devastating blow. She understood the principle of returning the favor in kind. Over the past four years, she had managed to collect far more from Lu Yao than what they had taken from her. So, she felt no loss. 0

Wen Qian let out a deep sigh as she sat on the edge of the bed, then leaned back and lay down, staring at the ceiling. Letting them off so easily seemed too lenient. In her previous life, she had suffered terribly; sometimes, living through such pain felt worse than death itself. Lu Zheng looked at her with deep concern, realizing he hadn’t done enough. 0

As Zhang Yan was being beaten, a sudden image flashed in her mind—a figure of a man. She quickly spoke up, "Mother, I know how to deal with Wen Qian now! Please let go; I can't take it anymore." Ding Cuihua didn’t stop her actions and shouted back, "Mother, don’t you want to know about Wen Qian’s affair with a man?" 0
